JV isn't a question when it comes to the hall. He doesn't need help. He may not be first ballot thanks to certain writers, but he's going to be in the hall.


If writers don't vote JV first ballot they should have their voting privileges revoked.

regarding JV...the more interesting question...

is he in the same tier now as the other all-time great right-handed pitchers? (let's say post-WWII)

the likes of Drysdale, Gibson, Marichal, Seaver, Palmer, Ryan, Clemens, Pedro, et al

Baby? His daughter is like 4. And they live in LA so what does Florida have to do with anything?

And I think if the market is rationale he stays and has a legit shot of being in the hall as an Astro. If he leaves he's no doubt in as a Tiger and maybe even does something to retire as a Tiger if only a token contract at the end which doesn't happen if he stays here and hangs it up here.

I think he is if he continues to dominate this year to the post season and through it.

If he is the Ace that drives us through another championship I don't see how you put him on anything other than the highest tier.

and for Altuve...

he has 8 all-star appearances and 3 batting titles --- those things will help his case too.

at this point he definitely needs to keep pumping up the counting numbers.

hits, steals, home runs, etc..,

and try to maintain a .300 career batting average --- which is excellent historically for a right-handed hitter

No. Altuve needs to keep producing for 4-6 more years. He has dropped off the pace for 3,000 hits and isn't likely to get there. If he ends up with 2,500 hits, 250 HRs I doubt he is getting in, even if the game has changed and even if the COVID year robbed half a season from a lot of guys.

The odds of 3k hits are getting very slim, but the HOF isn't out of reach.

He's only 32. Based on his play on the field he's having one of the best seasons of his career.

Plus he's got a laundry list of accomplishments.

He just needs to keep it up and he should be a lock with or without the '17 BS.

Have kids? They're always your baby regardless of age.

He also has a house in Florida. I don't know where he considers home or where they spend most of their time.

He also has an MVP, WS ring, 5 Silver Sluggers, and solid postseason stats (including an ALCS MVP). He should reach 2,000 hits before his 33 birthday and still has a lot of speed. Should also get to 1,000 runs, 400 doubles and 200 HRs by then, assuming health.

one thing working against Altuve and his counting numbers...

is the trend that most players today only play 140 to 145 games per season.

it's amazing to look back at Biggio's career...and realize he played in 156 games in 2004 at age 38. Played in 155 games in 2005 at age 39.

and ultimately he needed almost every one of those games to reach 3,000 hits

If Biggio did not get to 3,000 hits, would he still have made it in the HOF? Biggio waited three years, Baggy waited seven years.

For Altuve, if he puts together another 8-10 years then I think he's a lock for the HOF. If he retires in less then 5, I think it becomes more iffy. What he does in those 8-10 years determine when he goes in. I could see sportswriters giving him the Baggy treatment, especially if he doesn't win another WS.

Sorry I wasn't very clear. I wasn't asking from a statistical point of view. My real question was, assuming Jose stays healthy and gets the numbers that would typically make him a "no brainer" choice (and of course JV is already there), do you think voters will hold JV to the same standard of culpability as Jose?

I wish I was as confident as you guys, but I think both JV and Jose are going to get the Bagwell treatment. I do think JV will get in anyway, but it may keep Jose out if he's borderline, which at this rate he probably will be.

I feel like one thing working in Jose's favor that neither Biggio nor Bagwell had is postseason success. That should carry weight when determining HOF worthiness.

JV will go in no matter what as a Tiger and they will gloss over what he did with the Astros. I think he'll even be a first rounder, especially if he puts together 2-3 more years at this level.

Altuve will really depend on who is on the ballot when he retires, if he previously meets the no-brainer metrics. I don't think they'll have an empty class if he's on the ballot, but if there's someone else justifiable on the ballot they will go first.

BTW I think with lower batting averages, everyone swinging for the fences and pitchers not going as deep into games 2,500 hits is the new 3,000 and 250 wins (maybe even 200!) is the new 300...or W & BA start getting phased out as folks realize they aren't as telling of "greatness".

Last year when not a single guy in baseball had 200 hits and 14 wins tied you for 6th in MLB, it's going to take guys a lot longer to accumulate stats.

The Angels have said that Trout will not come off the IL when he's eligible. He's still having back and rib issues and took a cortisone shot.

Death, taxes, the Angels being 20 games back and Trout being injured.

So it's very unlikely but if the playoffs started today both teams would be in and it's possible these teams could meet in the WS. Not very likely but possible.

This would be an absolute nightmare for MLB.

100% yes. Brown is the only piece that you might not want to include but a proven MLB starting pitcher is always better than a pitching prospect
