Tired of arguing about Dusty.

Y'all can argue about TOFA instead.

I think this is a good representation of what the Stros did to their last two opponents.

Lol, imagine being Seattle 3 days ago.

14 game winning streak, and visions of the Yankees taking 2 in the double header and then sweeping us at home. In their mind they were knocking on the door to cutting our lead to a super manageable number by tomorrow.

Whoops. And you still have to face Framber tomorrow.
Imagine being the poster(s) on here before the All Star break that were talking about the Mariners closing to within 5 of the Astros. They seem to be very quiet at the moment.

I have been anything but quiet.

I'll stand by what I said. We finished the first half losing 2 of 3 to the worst team in baseball and not hitting well at all. Seattle had won 14 straight and was hotter than hell. The lead was 9 and we had a DH with NYY and horrible travel to open it up with. Lose that DH and we are 8 back and staring at the Mariners right in the face. We are 12 up and it easily could have gone the other way.

That was what was so frustrating about what Dusty did last night. He destroyed his pen when he didn't have to and boxed himself in. He gave JV no room to maneuver and gave himself no options today.

We all sit back and ***** about lineups and goofy choices for using guys to PH. But last night and today were bad mistakes. Mistakes that managers paid the kind of money he's paid shouldnt be making.

We lost a series to the worst team in baseball because it's baseball and anything can happen. The Mariners went nuclear and gained only like 3 games in that stretch and were still back 9.

The team was basically running on fumes headed into that all star break. If anything, the break, the rest for our players, and the resulting performance against one of the top 2 teams in MLB in a DH and then playing a scorching hot Mariners team really puts an exclamation point on the way this organization gives guys regular days off back to back in order to keep them fresh.

It should help the complaining about guys getting days off, but it won't.

I was wondering today about how Cleveland must feel about that Straw trade. Straw is pretty below average, and the other minor league catchers in their organization haven't exactly been knocking the cover off the ball.

Outside of Steven Kwan, Cleveland hasn't exactly been churning out position players... Click found a diamond in the rough, and between Yanier and Enmanuel we have a couple internal options for the future at first post-Yuli.

Astros rumored to be in on:

Josh Bell
Luis Castillo
Wilson Contreras

Bell and Contreras make sense from a need/depth perspective, with the woeful performance of Castro and his injury, the underperformance of Yuli, and the apparent seriousness of Uncle Mike's injury.

The interest in Castillo seems driven by reasonable contract, remaining control, and recent performance, though the need is less apparent. But you can never have enough quality pitching come the postseason, imo.

Regardless if the Astros land any of those guys I think we all expect them to trade for a lefty reliever.

The Soto Sweepstakes are worth staying out of.

So I'm watching quick pitch on MLB network, before they show the highlights, she does this bit about how the Astros should be called "the final boss". Judge is Mario, Stanton is Luigi, JP Crawford is Yoshi. Orbit and Junction Jack are Godzilla. Verlander is Bowser.

Yeah, I know I took a pic of my tv, I couldn't get it up on my PC fast enough to screenshot it.

Josh Bell makes sense, we could use more production from 1B
Contreras make sense, Castro is done for the year.
Castillo… is he good, yes. Does he make sense? No… I don't see how we need a starting pitcher as LMJ comes back, JV continues to deal, Framber is the man, and we have Javier/Garcia as a number 3/4 in the playoff rotation.

Am I insane? I think a lefty reliever would be nice and an outfielder and/or 1B would be a good addition
BadAggie

McCullers is rehabbing. There's JV, Framber, Javier, Garcia, Urquidy, and Odorizzi in the rotation.

Not to say the Astros shouldn't seek to improve.

We have the number 1 bullpen in the majors right now. Something no one would have predicted coming into this year.

I get second guessing and armchair managing. That's what forums like this are for. But at some point you could have the humility and self recognition to say "you know I don't always agree with Dusty in the moment but it damn sure appears to be working."

Dusty is going to finish in the top 10 of all time in wins and is going to be a first ballot HOF as a manager. If Dusty "sucks" then basically no one on earth is good.

Trade targets:
Lefty reliever
1B/C or classic 1B/DH type

Might be enough.

Hard to say 'stand pat' when you have a great shot at returning to the WS though.

This line of thinking reminds me of how a friend of mine used to describe eating at Pancho's: "it's not about quality, it's all about quantity".

As long as he's been managing, you'll get numbers like that. There's a reason he's had limited playoff success and never win a world series. The deck has to be stacked to protect him from having the option to make a bad decision.

Castillo may be more about the next two years since there's risk we lose JV

If we deal for him I think Odorrizi gets traded since he's the odd man out

Definitely don't see joining the Soto race, he's not really a good fit for our needs and he's going to cost way too much

On the fence about Bell, because Yuli could turn it around in the second half…he tends to figure out his slumps

At this point you have a playoff rotation of:

JV
Framber
Javier/Garcia/LMJ/Odo

I think we're set with our starting pitching… I'd love to see another reliever, perhaps a sleeper candidate, but we shall see.

I'd also love to imagine a lineup of:

Altuve
Brantley
Alvarez
Bregman
Bell
Tucker
Peña
CF
Machete

Might be wrong but my guess is it's one of Contreras or Bell for the Astros.

I would lean Contreras, would rather have experienced 2nd C.

Both rentals. Contreras should cost more since he plays a premium position. Either will be top tier prospects.

Also Benintendi out there, makes sense Astros not in on him as he is LF and no 1B or CF experience.

Brantley and Yuli free agents after this season makes sense Astros looking at 1B/DH type.

If Brantley iffy on return this season then could see Astros go after Benintendi

There is 0% chance they get Benintendi this season. He can't go to Toronto. Not unless Canada changes their rules of he gets vaxxed.

Regular season goals, if I were the manager
1 make the playoffs
2 team be as healthy as possible for the playoffs
3 know who you can trust in high leverage situations. And only way to do that is to put folks in high leverage situations. Also need to see if pitchers get results when pitching 2 days in a row, or for multiple innings, etc. And only way to do that is to put them in those situations

Question…sorry if this is not the right thread but anyways. I have tickets next Friday for the "concert series". Does this mean someone is performing or are they just playing music during the post game fireworks?

That's the same argument people make against Nolan. No one on this board would say Nolan sucks.

For some reason these owners keep hiring him. Maybe they all suck, too.

Now, maybe with previous teams he made decisions that cost his team a chance at the title. I honestly don't know. But I do know, last year, he pushed all the right buttons. The players just didn't execute. That's baseball sometimes.

Anyway, if managing the number 1 bullpen in baseball means he sucks at managing the bullpen there simply is no amount of data or facts that is going to convince some of you. You will always have the unprovable prospect of what he could have done and the notion that your alternate reality worked out flawlessly.
