Machete hit his 3rd career GS today. Notable players with only 2 include:

Tony Eusebio
Hank Conger (I'm not joking)
Evan Gattis
George Brett

I'd love to get Christian Walker. Another 2 years of control. Great defender. Statcast pegs his expected numbers to be much better than actual, so he may be a bit underrated. Get him and Mantiply as our lefty reliever from the D-Backs and call it a wrap.

Yankees prospect dropped a fly ball that would have been out #3 for Hunter Brown. Allows 2 unearned runs scored.

the six-man rotation is the only thing that will keep JV from winning 20 games this year.

he has made 17 starts in 2022...and been the pitcher of record 15 times (12-3) -- a very high percentage.

his overall W-L record with the Astros is 55-18

I want someone to look me in the eye and tell me this is real. That PEDs aren't involved or that someone isn't using lights to tell what pitches are coming. Make the argument that this is real.

Matt Carpenter is in his year 37 season. He did what normal 33 year old players do and that's decline.

2019. He played in 129 games, slashing .226/.334/.392 with 15 HR, 46 RBI and a wRC+ of 96. It was the natural decline, all lower than his career averages. And it continued as it was supposed to.

2020. COVID year. He played in 50 games, .186/.325/.314, 4HR, 24 RBI, wRC+ 85. Yes COVID was a tough year for lots of hitters but it looks like Matt is on the decline.

2021. 130 games. A full season for an aging player. .169/.305/.275, 3 HR, 21 RBI, wRC+ 70. Matt needs to retire. He's clearly done.

2022 he tried one more time. He took a MiLB contract with the Rangers and in mid May they released him having never played for the Major league club.

So the Yankees signed him and lo and behold he found the fountain of youth. Or a witch doctor. Or Roger and Arod's drug dealer.

In 30 games he's slashing .360/.473/.933. Yes that's a 9 it's not a typo. He has 13 HRs, 31 RBI and a wRC+ of 285. He is 36 years and 7 months old.

Convince me this is normal. That nothing strange is happening.

Good luck with that.

Some journalist with guts could win a Pulitzer exposing what is happening here.

So much of baseball is psychological. It's suspect for sure, but 30 games is a small sample size in baseball.

That said, **** the Yankees.

It's just 30 games?

(New York angle)
Jeremy Lin signed a contract that wasn't guaranteed with the Knicks a couple of months into the season back in 2012, and what transpired next during a transcendent February was Linsanity. He wasn't that good, but for about 30 games he was. Overpaying bad point guards was kind of the Rockets' thing (looking at you Matt Maloney)., so of course we went all in.

Maldy is having a similar stretch as Carpenter (albeit in half the games - but they're both small samples). It happens. Let's see if he maintains.

Some statcast data on old Matt

He has an average EV of 91.7mph. That's the highest it's been since statcast debuted in 2015.

His barrel % sits at a nice round 20%. That's double his statcast era career and his highest prior to this year was 12.7%

His hard hit % is 46% and that's the highest in his statcast career.

Nothing to look at people. Move along. Just move along.

Matt is married to an Ag who was roommates with a good friend of mine. They dated when he was at TCU and she was at A&M.

Our running joke was 'What the hell is she still doing with him? He's a loser chasing some MLB dream that'll never happen. When is she gonna wake up and dump that A hole?'

Well jokes on us because he's rich AF and she's living the life. Must be nice

That was a great trade and the timing was perfect. I was certain we were going to win it all when news of the trade broke, but it's only the third best in Astros history.

Bagwell for Andersen - a relief pitcher rental for the entire career of a Hall of Famer. Andersen pitched well for Boston (1.23 ERA in 22.0 innings) but only made 15 appearances for them.
Yordan for Fields - the best hitter in the game currently for a washed up pitcher that helped the 'Stros win it all in 2017 by allowing 2 of 3 batters he faced in game 2 to hit homers.

Honestly, other than giving the Tigers someone like Correa + Springer, Detroit was going to lose any trade involving Verlander. Just turned it that they super lost.

On the other hand they were going to suck regardless and ownership didn't have to pay more than a pittance to those players they received in return.

Sucks for the fans, but I doubt the owner is lamenting pocketing the $50-75 million he saved during their rebuild (I can't tell how many years Verlander had left on his contract - but the Tigers were paying him $25 million per season). His only regret is that he couldn't package Cabrera with him too.

At the time, JV looked like he was heading downhill with a few years of big dollars left. It was primarily a salary dump for them.

Yordan keeps going the way he is it will eclipse the Bagwell trade and then some...and that's not a slight to Baggy at all.

An older guy having a hot streak? Only one in the majors...right?

oh yeah, there's a guy named Justin who is doing pretty well too. Relax.

Pitcher vs hitter. Completely different. Something fishy is going on in NY.

This is the reason I don't worry too much about losing prospects. They could always jump up and bite you when they become Josh Hader and you valued Carlos Gomez and Mike Fiers more... but that rarely happens to the Astros.

Astros should go big this summer. Go get a huge bat- pay less for a rental, or more for some control. Protect Brown, Diaz and another couple of prospects but be willing to let go of a valued name from several tiers. Leon? He'd be worth something and is no guarantee to ever stick in Houston. Urquidy? You can never have enough pitching but you have to give something to get something. Meyers or McCormick? Throw in several others, maybe including Whitley if someone buys on fools gold, and see if that entices a Soto trade or the like.

The point is that one of those guys may haunt you, but it's highly doubtful that more than one will, and maybe not even that much. I'm terrible at trade values, but there's a combination in there that could likely entice the top talent, depending on the selling team and the timing of their window. The Nats, for example, might not want MLB "now" talent like Urquidy and Meyers.

Just a collection of thoughts about not overvaluing farm talent.

I like it. Maybe they can get one more game closer to the Yankees before the break... you know, that team everyone was calling "historic" since the first week of the season.
