It's an off day, and the trade deadline will be approaching soon, so let's talk hot stove.
Josh Bell, 1B/DH, Nationals, rental, $10 million in '22. The Astros cost would have to be cheap in my opinion, because we assume Brantley and Alvarez will be healthy and swinging the lumber into the fall as DH options. Bell only plays 1B, which would free Gurriel up to also contribute at 2B or 3B as needed, but this move seems like a bad fit by itself.
Yuli can help at 2B and 3B….did we hit the sauce early on this off day? Yuli hasn't ever played meaningful innings anywhere but first but now you beieve he needs to be spelled at first and that will allow him to play other positions…..
Yuli has played 2B and 3B with the Astros when needed. As stated in a post above, that's where he played in Cuba. Notice I said "as needed" as in an injury or something. I also said that it really wasn't a great fit since Bell only plays 1B as far as I know. No flexibility there, unlike some of the other options I mentioned.
And please read closer next time, or at least don't be so obtuse. No need for that.
Forrest Whitley injury update: Upper bicep inflammation. MRI revealed no damage to the rotator cuff or shoulder. Forrest walked off the mound yesterday in Sugarland after pitching 1.2 scoreless frames. It was his 2nd start in AAA as he makes his return from TJ surgery.

Exactly. I remember your post.texasaggie2015 said:
I mentioned Happ on here as the guy I want us to dial in on a couple months ago. Glad to see someone else on board as well.
We love to give guys days off, so Happ would be playing damn near every day.
Agreed. Maldy is too valuable behind the plate and highly doubt we deal for anyone to replace him as starter. Maybe a deal for a cheap veteran backup if we don't think Castro has it anymore.texasaggie2015 said:
Seems like every national writer thinks we go after Contreras. I don't see us getting a catcher with how much the team loves Maldy. It's going to be interesting to see what we do. I would be good with Mancini as well and obviously you can always use another bullpen arm.

How about this for comparison... Astros wins at the 85-game mark in recent seasons (compared to MLB leader):
2016- 46 (54)
2017- 58 (58)
2018- 55 (56)
2019- 53 (58)
2020- ...
2021- 52 (54)
2022- 56 (61)
Goes to show just how strong the Astros have been this year.
Yep. It's crazy to think that for every three games series we've played this year, on average, the umpires have been spotting the other team expected runs in two of them.Bobcat-Ag said:
That doesn't seem very funny. Frustrating definitely, and impressive that they have such a good record
There are 3 weeks to the deadline right? I believe it is 8/2Mathguy64 said:
What we do in the next 2 weeks 100% hinges on Yordan's hand. What play Click makes will tell us his bad that is.

My #1 trade deadline wish is a 1B or OF that kills left-handed pitching. I still have bad memories of all those Braves lefties mowing us down in the World Series last year. Was doing a little bit of analysis of our lineup to see if there are any major OPS discrepancies against righty/lefty:
Yordan: .368 higher vs righties
Altuve: .277 higher against lefties
Bregman: .281 better against righties
Tucker is basically the same either way. Brantley, Pena and Yuli have some minor discrepancies, but nothing that you'd want to make any lineup shifts of behalf of.
My observations:
1) I don't like Bregman hitting next to Yordan in the lineup. Especially if Bregman is separating two lefty hitters (like Brantley/Yordan). Too easy to make things difficult for us in the late innings against a LH specialist.
2) I'd love to see Altuve and Yordan hitting back to back, preferably with Altuve sandwiched in between Yordan and another lefty.
3) Ian Happ is still the guy I'd really really like to snag at the deadline. He checks so many boxes. He's extremely versatile defensively. He also mashes lefty pitching (.953 OPS vs lefties this year).
If we could acquire Happ, I'd love to see us restructure the lineup a little. Basically, if you want to have a lefty face Yordan, fine. They're going to have to face Altuve or Happ too.
1. Brantley, 2. Altuve, 3. Yordan, 4. Happ, 5. Tucker, 6. Bregman, 7. Pena, 8. Yuli, 9. Maldy
I know Altuve is our leader/lead-off guy, I just think there's alot of value derived from wedging him between two lefties. I also like Yordan hitting 3rd instead of 4th.
That lineup also assumes Happ in CF. As of right now, Meyers is on track to earn the job. Happ would be really nice insurance though. And we can move him around the field and play matchups.
Sounds like the kind of injury a teenage boy who just "discovered himself" would get.EastCoastAgNc said:Forrest Whitley injury update: Upper bicep inflammation. If Yordan is broken in a bad way we shouldn't be waiting until the end.Lonestar_Ag09 said:There are 3 weeks to the deadline right? I believe it is 8/2Mathguy64 said:

100% agree. said it in the offseason too. This is what we need to add.agproducer said:
We need a lefty for the BP. We have no idea if Taylor will be back this year. I think we should look to upgrade there.
I like the Happ idea if we don't have to give up too much. We likely would have to give up major league talent from triple A and some lotto tickets. If we are looking to do that, is rather go all in and go for Bryan Reynolds. That would likely take Hunter Brown, Leon maybe more and a couple low A guys to get that done. He's under control through 2025.
Valid, so you mean his 10 day IL stint being the 2 weeks...I gotchaMathguy64 said:If Yordan is broken in a bad way we shouldn't be waiting until the end.Lonestar_Ag09 said:There are 3 weeks to the deadline right? I believe it is 8/2Mathguy64 said:

I'm not sure I trust the team when they say its not a hamate or something worse than what they are saying (which admittedly isn't much). The injuries to Meyers and LMJ were much more significant than what they let on.Farmer1906 said:Why would you think that?Mathguy64 said:If Yordan is broken in a bad way we shouldn't be waiting until the end.Lonestar_Ag09 said:There are 3 weeks to the deadline right? If the way Dusty refused to platoon catchers last year is any indication, we know he won't do it.Quote:
However, these few minutes of research shows we should be altering our lineup based on the starting pitching.
Maybe it's just me but I'm not super high on JJ. Of course I hope I'm wrong.Quote:
We have a backup 1B and player for the future his name is JJ Matejevich
The #1 guy on my list would be Arizona's Joe Mantiply. He's left a bullpen Framber with the ground balls. Strom probably gets the credit for his success.Lonestar_Ag09 said:
