Let's say he has a handful of dominant AAA starts...would y'all be willing to trade him for something that would increase our chance of winning it all, this year? What would that piece be?

Yes. Offense.

If Whitley starts pitching lights out, yeah move him. His 40 man clock is running and he has shown a propensity to grenade and lose focus. Strike while the iron is hot

Part of me likes the idea of him and Hunter Brown coming up the queue at the same time. They have potential to be window open extenders into 2028-29. We're also going to have to pay Framber, Javier and Garcia over the next couple of years, not to mention a likely raise for JV. Having some super cheap, talented arms might come in handy, especially given that we're a little thin on pitching in the farm right now (loss of picks).

BUT.

I think we've set ourselves up nicely to be very selective in what we go after at the break. Yuli picked it up a little in June and his defense is valuable, but finding a righty mashing 1B would be kinda fun. Also think Jake has a month to show us why we don't need to go find a CF upgrade. Could see us making a move at either position.

I'm open to giving up Whitley, but I'm not sure who's available that would warrant giving him up. I don't think I'd deal him for a rental unless it's a damn good rental. Last year we materially improved our roster at the deadline and only gave up Toro and De La Garza. Feel like those are the type of guys that we'll be looking to flip. Someone like Chas (starter caliber with tons of control years) and/or some prospects that are probably off our radars.

That year is a good reminder how fast things can change. Hampton left for Colorado, Lima was mentally broken by the Crawford Boxes, Caminiti, Spiers and Everett all retired or regressed, Reynolds and Wagner were at their peaks…
And damn you Walt Weiss for playing an unbelievable SS in that series to send us packing.

Yes. Pretty sure Satan operates that website because it is incredibly illegal and efficient.

Of all the upcoming free agent 1B/CF playing for teams that will be deadline sellers, Josh Bell seems like the most interesting idea. Would y'all give up Whitley for him? Or would we be better off hoping Yuli can find it and keep our prospects?

I'd be inclined to give up Whitley but for someone with more control.

For a rental I'd be OK moving Chas, some lesser prospects, and possibly even Urquidy.

The jury is still out on Meyers and McCormick/Siri aren't even close to the answer. Go get a legit center fielder.

Disagree - think Meyers has good upside and will have a solid productive career. Not so much with Chas or Siri.

Hope so and he might, but i don't like the idea of going into the post season with him batting .215.

LMJ is younger than JV - and JV has been phenomenal post TJ surgery at age 39. And probably surpassing many folk's expectations. I really think Lance will be just fine when he comes back. May not be a bad idea however to not rush him into the rotation.

Meyer is just now getting acclimated to mlb pitching. Plus he doesn't have that many at bats in his career against top notch pitching to make any judgements yet.

He's played, what, 3 or 4 games this season after being out half a seasons worth of games?

I say let's give whim some time to see if he'll be a little better than .215 going into the post season. At least all of July.

Meyers looks good so far considering he's only a few games in.

That oppo double into gap last night looked great!

Yeah I have zero complaints about Meyers five games in.

Meyers is going to be given every opportunity to be our CF of the future and I think he will be. Question for me is whether we want to roll with him this year if an upgrade is available via the trade market.

Y'all are all so funny to catch up on when y'all get on a roll.

If Whitley is truly finding it and becoming what was expected and what warranted his draft position the only team that would consider trading him away is the Pirates.

No one in their right mind trades a guy who just got healthy and is figuring it out with Ace level stuff.

Billy Spiers, my all time Astro utility guy. Just liked the way he carried himself.
Kinda surprised Whitley didn't go to Corpus first. This could make for an expedited 40 man roster move if he gets hammered in Sugarland.
The not trailing in a game since June 18th is just crazy. I was guessing 5-4 on the NY gauntlet, which turned out to be a clinic except for 2 innings. 7-2 was not even a hope.

Eh...The question becomes is he figuring it out and projecting well or is he just on a good stretch and out performing himself.

If it's just a good stretch then you sell high while you can.

I trust our FO to make the right decision on him.
Jet Black

I agree. He deserves time. Hopefully he hits his stride, but if he doesn't, I don't like the idea of going into the post season with two black holes in the lineup.

I'm not sold on Meyers being the CF of the future. I think he is more of a stop gap or 4th OF, just buying the Astros time until Leon is ready.

Leon, imo, is the CF of the future. I think they plan to do the same thing they did with Yuli. Remember the AJ Reed experiment? Unless Meyers blows them away, that position is Leon's by 2024.

Maybe. I was hoping to see him take a bigger step forward this year offensively. Still strikes out waaaaay too much.

Seems like Chas and Siri should both be trade bait. Meyers and Leon both figure to be better. Might as well clear the logjam.

Agree but you make your own point of why you don't waste prospects on any stud CF when you have a serviceable CF and your one for the future.

Same with trading away young stud Pitchers.

Urquidy is the only young arm on the block in my opinion. He's a little further towards FA and he's not an ace just a 3-4 type guy

After 6 games and only 21 At Bats, I think Meyers is still finding himself at the plate. The concerning thing right now is he's yet to draw a single walk, and is striking out too much. Then again, he only had 10 in 146 ABs, last year. Once he starts adding some more extra-base hits, we'll see the OPS climb back similar as last year.

Unless his defense collapses, I think he's gonna be around for a while

Hit your first HR and win a game, go on the IL.

This is the way.
