Amazing how well the Astros have done in recent memory with no lefties to speak of, thanks in large part to analytics. Find those RH pitchers whose stuff plays well against lefthanded batters.

keep Javier in the rotation until he proves he shouldn't be.

Trade no one this year. No way. In the year of the pitcher, the last thing we need is to get worse in that area.

Either we go with a modified 6 man rotation for now or someone goes to the pen. It won't be Framber, JV or I think Odo.

I've already said I would do a 6 man but you could leave it a 5 man rotation and use Odo and Garcia in a tandem. Garcia just can't get to a lineup three times. So use him and Odo.

Right now your 5 man when everybody is back healthy should look like this

JV (2.03 ERA)
Framber (2.65 ERA)
Javier (2.73 ERA)
Garcia (3.54 ERA)
Odorizzi (3.13 ERA)

Lance will likely not be a starter this year at least until very late. You could swap him and Odorizzi in September/October if necessary.

Next few starts are big for Urquidy. If he does what he did in the Bronx, then he will push to stay in the rotation

Given Lance's injury issues...is it too crazy of an idea to consider him for elite bullpen work?

Obviously we are paying him 17 mil a year...so that's higher than Pressly is getting as a closer at $15m/year

I suspect Odorizzi may have a big drop-off in performance, but I hope I'm wrong. Having options is better than not having options. Somebody gets moved to the pen, you go to a 6 man rotation (with Verlander always getting normal rest), or you have trade-bait

Both Odorizzi and JV have player options next season. Both are pitching at a level that makes sense for them to test free agency. Worst case scenario both walk and we need to fill a spot next year with Brown:

LMJ
Framber
Javier
Garcia
Brown/Urquidy

I think he would be a bullpen arm this year then move into the rotation next year

I'd still like to see them bring him up late, and see if he could possibly even be ready for a few innings of middle relief by the post season

Then make him a starter next year

From an article Tags just put out. This quote from Boone got me thinking, them not getting a look at Odo or LMJ this year might mean something in the playoffs assuming those 2 are on the roster and pitching at a level that matters in the playoffs.

"They've done a good job of, for the most part, holding us down and … that's going to happen sometimes against good teams," Yankees manager Aaron Boone said. "We'll learn from all this and hopefully gain important information from facing their guys. We got to face all [five] starters. Hopefully, we make good use of the experience we get from facing them."

The issue is workload. He's never thrown more than 113 innings in a season.

Normally I would never, never, never trade pitching, but ………Odorizzi is my exception. If they could get anything for him I'd do it because I don't trust him to be good against good teams or for very long.

Meanwhile, Brown's been coming out of the pen a lot this year, and McCullers did it in 2017. It might save Lance's arm a little longer too. We do need to give some outfielders a chance. McCormick and Siri got a big chance and failed. Let's try others.

Mine sits prominently on a shelf in my home office. Can't believe it has been 23 years since Mike Hampton won that Sunday game to clinch the division. Seeing he and Niekro on the field together after the game was awesome.
