And we're supposed to pretend the ump didnt make some questionable ball and strike calls in the bottom of the 8th
That was so shady, like he was on the take. The obvious strikes called balls against us especially.
Way WAY past time for robo umps. It's one thing if an ump sucks somewhat equally but when it's completely lopsided like today shows that it needs to be removed from their responsibility.

You can still make your strike 3 calls and try to sound cool/unique but it will be a signal in your headset and not your ****ty (or corrupt) vision that leads to the call.

Apparently I'll need to go to Asia more often as the team is kicking ass while I'm here

Corrupt @$$ MLB. Is Joe Torre still head of review?

Lot of new capacity in the market since Deshawn went to Cleveland

Four of the five Yankee batters in the bottom of the 8th had at least one strike called a ball. The only one who didn't was Gallo as he flied out on the first pitch he saw.

I would be happy if they came up with a challenge system for balls and strikes. Could be very similar to the tennis challenge system. Ump still calls balls and strikes but if a player feels he is wrong they can challenge and the result comes up on the big screen instantly and then play on. Can limit each batter and pitcher/catcher to 2 challenges a game and they can get more if they get both challenges right.

Pitches 5 and 7 to LeMahieu were strikes 4 and 5 of that at bat.

Umps get way too much benefit of the doubt on ball/strike calls. All it takes is one "bad" or borderline call to change the outcome of a game.

Great problem to have, but what do we do when Odo and then LMJ get healthy? I have been very anti trading starting pitching away, but sending Odo off may work out. He's probably just a rental for the rest of the year. I think the odds of him pitching key playoff innings are slim.

Umps see thousands of pitches every season. They know what is and isn't in the zone. Now with the detail on location of pitches and corresponding ball/strike calls pretty clear to see the corruption. Not like MLB is an organization known for impartial Justice in applying rules.

If we're talking about the Odo of his last 3 or 4 starts there is value in keeping him. Not sure he gets back to that when he returns. All depends on if they need 5th starter or not at the deadline

Arguably LeMahieu saw strikes on all 7 pitches of his at bat yet walked.

At the beginning of this 9 game stretch, I would have gladly taken 5-4. 6-3 or even 7-2 is entirely within reach.

I'd bet we see a 6 man rotation when Odo comes back.

Bullpen will need the rest

the Yankees were going to be active at the trade deadline...

but this series is going to make them even more aggressive.

they need left-handed hitters badly.

trotting out Rizzo, Gallo, and Hicks as their lefties --- please keep doing that

On the topic of umpires, I know they have tendencies and trends in what they call strikes outside the zone. I wonder if any of the scouting the Astros do invoices leveraging those tendencies for their pitchers.

looking ahead a little bit...

Salvador Perez is expected to be out for 8 weeks with a thumb injury.

Astros won't see him when KC visits Minute Maid the 1st week of July

Umpires are going to miss pitches
Umpires are going to have tendencies (it's human nature)

The issue arises when it clearly favors one team over the other and those things aren't universal to both sides.

To consistently call the low pitch strike Cole was getting was fine had it been called for Javier or Neris or whoever.

It just can't be one sided and when it's that far one sided one can't help but think it's intentional.
BadAggie

Neris comes in, ump starts making atrocious calls that go one way, and Gallo ends up falling 5 feet short of tying the game up.

Easy to explain this away - oh, the reliever isn't hitting the zone, Astro bullpen blows another hold/save.

Let's say Gallo ties it up and Yankees go on to win. What's the recourse? Dusty complains in media, seen as being poor loser.

Let's not forget there has been ref/gambling scandal in recent memory in the US (NBA w/Donaghy). That is, it's not just going back a century to the Black Sox.

If you watch any good amount of MLB games you see bad pitch calls. Just uncanny how the ones in this series so far are overwhelmingly benefitting one side.

Time for technology to take over. Give the umps an ear piece and let robots make the calls.

I tend to subscribe to the maxim of 'don't mistake for conspiracy what can be explained by incompetence' but man, ump behind the plate was off big time in the bottom of the 8th today.

Its all a matter of goals. Trading Odo saves you a few bucks and gets you a low level lotto ticket. If you want to get someone who helps you now then you have to look at trading Urquidy, if not Javier. Obviously I'd rather trade Urquidy of the two but ultimately depends on what you get back.

Well yeah...The result doesn't change the fact the umpire was shltty at his job.

Bad umpire is a bad umpire

Ump's bad calls allowed two walks that put the game a half a degree on launch angle by Gallo away from being tied up.

Hey they won doesn't change the trend of the Yankees getting the benefit of terrible pitch calls in this series.

Yes indeed, that is when you should complain, because other wise it looks like whining and being a sore loser.

This is when you make a statement after a win and a no hit win.

I now understand how the Yankees are putting up great O numbers, if their games are being called like ours have been then that is a huge advantage. HUGE. It gives you a just a little edge in pitch selection. it drives the pitch count up and forces the pitcher to put it in the zone more than they would. Just a few calls can make a huge difference and that is in the pitchers head.
