After we lose tonight we will have the same record as last year at this point. I dont remember being this discouraged but maybe i was.
Maybe because we still had some heart in the locker room with Correa. Everything seems very mute now that both he and Springer are gone.

EDIT: didn't realize it was a parody account and fake video.

The real video resulted in a triple though.. we need some of that luck

It's okay to acknowledge our previous slow starts AND say this team is playing like dog crap right now.

What can't happen is what happened in 2016 where a horrible April start dooms your season. I dont think that will happen but this division race will be ALOT tighter this year than it has in the past.

It also doesn't help that our manager barely has a pulse.

Is Trevor Rosenthal done as a pitcher? He would seem like a guy that could add value to this bullpen

Well 2020 was not a good season record wise. Finishing under .500 and if it was current playoff format we would not have made it in. So I wouldnt look at that as an indicator.

The only comp is 2021 since it is the closest to same roster as this year.

Hopefully we have 0 Pedro Baez's on the team after Sunday.

Regarding Rosenthal, he had a 1.90 ERA in 2020 which is better than anything Baez put together in his career. I would think he is worth a minor league contract to see if he still has anything left. It would be pretty low risk I'd think

Most teams probably will think the same way, and there will be one crazy enough to give him a major league deal. He would be dumb not to take it over a minor league offer.

this is a very very interesting analysis.

Especially about Tucker and his bad luck and also the team's decision to limit at bats in spring training.

I really don't understand the limited PT our guys seemed to have during an extremely shortened spring training.

Is it really bad luck if you constantly hit it right at fielders or is your hitting spread just predictable?

I wonder about analyses like these that rely on expected stats that are based on EV and LA for batters. How does changing the ball impact those stats. Kyle Tucker looks really unlucky now, but is there reason to assume things will improve for him when we are seeing offense around the league down because the ball isn't travelling as far? How much weight are previous season outcomes given when calculating the expected outcomes?

Sure hitting a line drive right at someone is one thing. But I have seen balls come off Tucker's bat that I thought were home runs that end up caught at the warning track. It seems like there is no reason to expect that to be any different even if the metrics think those balls would be a home run 70% of the time.

So let's stop dancing around data and metrics and talk about why the offense is lethargic. The answers are leadership and protection.

Here's our opening day starting lineups from the last 4 years.

2019: Springer, Altuve, Bregman, Brantley, Gurriel, White (sorry I blacked out there), Chrinios, Diaz, Marisnick (Correa was hurt)

2020: Springer, Altuve, Bregman, Brantley, Gurriel, Correa, Reddick, Diaz, Machete

2021: Altuve, Brantley, Bregman Tucker, Correa, Alvarez, Gurriel, Straw, Machete

2022: Altuve, Brantley, Bregman, Alvarez, Gurriel, Tucker, Pena, McCormick, Machete

And last night's lineup:

McCormick, Brantley, Bregman, Alvarez, Gurriel, Tucker, Diaz, Castro, Pena

Observations:

1. We don't have a leadoff hitter with Altuve out. Or more correctly, Dusty hasn't identified one. Your leadoff guy has to know multiple ways to get on base and be a smart base runner when he's there. So either put the kid up there, since he has shown decent bat control to get a walk, or go back to the 2018 playoffs and put Bregman leadoff. He's your best OBP guy long term.

2. There's not a leader in the everyday lineup with Altuve hurt. George was that high energy guy. Carlos became that high energy guy. Bregman is that guy when he's doing well at the plate, but when he's not, he goes into a shell and sulks. He's the obvious candidate to become the always talking, always bouncing around guy, but he needs to match the enthusiasm to all situations.

3. Tucker and Alvarez have to evolve from the young guys who are the hope of tomorrow to the mentality of THIS IS OUR TEAM. Tucker especially. He looked like a space cadet last night. Not running out of the box, not hustling, those are totally unacceptable, at any level by any person. You can't be an MVP candidate at age 25 and be disinterested in running as hard as you can down the line. Alvarez needs to spend some time with David Ortiz and learn the finer points of being the big scary guy and intimidating the other team to the point where if there's a brawl, you're convinced he's going to potentially kill you.

4. The bottom of the lineup is horrific. No ****, right? We gotta trade for a bat to DH or find some Jack Parkman esque catcher who can hit 20 HR and bat his weight. Anything. Tucker went 3 for 4 to get his average up to .169 last night. There is no reason on earth for any opposing pitcher to give him anything to hit with Diaz and Castro/Maldonado coming up behind him. Even if he's patient enough to get a walk, those guys aren't getting him in. The black hole has to end. Castro is hitting .067 and Maldonado is hitting .065. A platoon that goes 3 for 46 isn't quite what we had in mind.

5. Until you can do that, protect your guys the best you can: Build a lineup that can score a few runs and not turn into a coma patient past spot #6 Give Tucker the Derek Bell treatment and get him between two guys where they have to pitch to him.

I agree on Tucker. I'd like to see him in swap with Brantley, mainly because I trust Brantley more as the last true hitter in the lineup who can handle being pitched around.

Think a trade for a catcher that can hit is a must do midseason.

Why trade for a catcher just to watch Maldy continue to start 5 out of 6 days a week? Castro was clearly the better hitter last season and Maldy continued to start over him outside of Maldy's scheduled off days.

Just bring Lee up and cut Castro and see if Lee can do anything vs big league arms

Catcher is the biggest black hole in the MLB. A hitting catcher is just about a unicorn.

But I agree with cutting Castro and going young

Yep, very unlucky as a team and considerably less ready to start the year. Dusty is banking on no one running away with the division and sacrificing 2-6 wins early to be "theoretically" in position as the playoffs approach. We'll see.

Didn't analyze that data or methodology too much, but I did enjoy the article. Thanks for posting!
