No, I don't care that he bats sub .200. He can draw walks and crank homers.

Does he though?

He only has 10 HRs and 21 RBIs and Yankee Stadium is shorter than MMP.

One of the last people I'd wanna see come into the box as a PH in an important spot is Joey Gallo.

Hard pass

And I'm sure you'll respond with some advanced expected stats about how good he is.

He has for most of his career. If he was killing it, he wouldn't be available. Hence the buy low.

It's a joke. To finish out the season starting September 15th, the Mariners have the following

Angels - 4
A's - 3
Royals - 3
Rangers - 3
A's - 3
Tigers - 4
Who could have known the Rangers wouldn't be good this year?

What the hell is this
I would be all for this as long as it was super cheap. You're buying low and trusting your coaches to fix someone with a somewhat high ceiling. He's about a year removed from a .869 OPS (what he hit as a Ranger in '21).

He would platoon and only face righties. Put him in LF until Brantley gets back. Split time with Yuli at first. Be a weapon as a PH.

No, I don't care that he bats sub .200. He can draw walks and crank homers.
If the Astros trade for Joey Gallo in 2022, I will buy everyone on this thread a Joey Gallo jersey, take you all to a game, get giant banners of Joey Gallo's face made to hold up during commercial breaks, and wear a donkey costume with an Astros hat myself to celebrate King Donkey.

Actually, they do not. MLB schedules are not balanced.

ADDED:

Astros play 39 home division games
Seattle plays 37 home division games

Astros play 7 games vs NYY, Balt, Cle, ChiSox, Det, and KC
Seattle plays 7 games vs TB, Tor, Bos, Minn, Cle, and Det

Astros play 4 games vs NYM and Ari
Seattle plays 4 games vs Wash and SD

Astros play 3 home games vs Philly and Miami and 3 road games vs Atl and Wash
Seattle plays 3 home games vs Atl and Philly and 3 road games vs NYM and Miami

I think he's secretly just a really big Gallo fan and would want to do exactly this if we got him, but he has to make it look like it's a lost bet to save face.

Moot point because the Yankees would never trade us someone that might help us...and trust me I get as annoyed as anyone at the expected stats and the long-winded lectures on why someone that sucks is really good, but I'm with Farmer on this one.

Would not want him up with 1 out and a man on 3rd, but he's still a GG-caliber OF, still hits RHP well and can still hit when not in NYC. When he's at his best he draws enough walks to get on base as much as the next guy and of course he mashes dingers.

He has put up most of his gawdy stats in low-pressure situations and he hits terrible in MMP, but I'd certainly rather see him in the lineup than:

  • Siri (ever)
  • Dubon in the OF (ever)
  • Chas (vs RHP)
  • I'd even put him in over Yuli vs. RHP if he can still play 1b.

Again, Yankees aren't letting him come here, but hell yes I'd trade Siri for him.

The Yankees would never trade with us when we're in contention. Because nobody does that with a team you are likely to face in the playoffs.

That said, this is my leading contender so far.

Edit: And with that Google search, my whole side panel of TexAgs ads just became places to buy a mascot costume.

After reviewing current trends and remaining schedules I think it's pretty clear the Astros are going to have home field advantage thru the playoffs unless there is some barrage of critical injuries.

Trading for Gallo makes absolutely no sense. If we had the winning run on third base in the bottom of the ninth in a crucial game, Dusty would most likely pinch hit Gallo in hoped of getting a sac fly to win the game. But we all know how that will turn out.

.186/.314/.391, 61K in 156 AB vs RHP. If he puts it in play, there is a decent chance it goes over the fence...but more than likely he won't put it in play.

Gallo was 5th in the AL in BsR (the baserunning component of fWAR) last season. He's not a base stealing threat, but he's a great baserunner.

He's also a better PH vs RHP than most of our bench guys.

Doesn't matter because he's going to the Padres.

Gallo strikes out way too much to ever be an Astro unless they see something on tape that makes them think they can fix it. He's a plus fielder but the batting metrics ain't there. Strike zone knowledge is hard to teach . You either got it or you don't not that it can't be improved with good coaching. Imo.

The Astros pride themselves in scouting guys that fit their system. Gallo is the anti-Astro.

Aledmys .239/.277/.385

Dubon .180/.224/.244

Castro .130/.228/.203

Yuli .221/.277/.353

Gallo BA 50 points and OPS 220 points higher away from Yankee Stadium so yeah, if you're telling me he's going to hit .230 with walks & dingers against RHP I think he'd merit a shot.

But father time is certainly catching up to him and it's also dumb to roll into September with Matijevic as your best backup option when there will be super cheap and solid options out there.

Those making the argument that Gallo sucks this year so we shouldn't trade for him are missing the point. Yes, he sucks. He sucks real real bad. But he hasn't always sucked. June of 2021 he hit 10 HRs and 20 doubles. Yuli has 7 HRs and 24 doubles all season long. The point would be to buy him at his very lowest in hopes he could be fixed. Last season he cost 2 top 15 and 2 top 30 prospects. This year he won't. Low risk, high reward. If he sucks then he doesn't make the playoff roster and he moves on.
