An opt out is the only way to get him to take a 6 year deal, but I hope it's at least after year 2 and not year 1

1 year opt out gives me terrible vibes.

"Correa is an Astro! unless he has a big year! then he is probably gone!"

I get awful vibes from that

Not sure what kinda contract we could get Carlos back for but say it's a big money short term deal. I'd pass and gladly spend the money on Bauer. He's a d bag, but we could use more starting pitching.

Gross
And Bauer isn't even available. He's still under contract for the dodgers.

I just want a WS title in 2022. If that means Correa 1 year deal then I'm all for it

You would lose the entire locker room if you make that move.

Getting Carlos Correa back on any shorter term deal is a HUGE win for the Astros.

If it's one year, great. Let's make another run this year, groom Pena and re-evaluate all options after the season.

If it's six years, great. A few months ago we thought locking up Correa meant committing to him through his age 37 season. Now it's 33. We get his prime.

I'd personally prefer a 6 year deal like that but with an opt out after year 2. But I'm sure he would rather after years 1

The purpose of it being a 6 year deal is to provide Carlos with coverage in case something goes terribly wrong.

1/40 - Carlos is injured and bats .200 then he hits the market and doesn't get anything close to 300 M.

6/200 - Carlos can choose to opt in or out the first couple of years. He bet on himself and won last year. He might not win this time. In this made up scenario he'd still get 5/167.

But he has the leverage. If Houston won't give him the short term deal, then I bet he can find dozens that would. It's much easier to commit to 200 M than 350 M.

Split the diff. 7/250. Opt out after 3.

Profit. WS title.

If it's 6 years then something probably went very wrong. If we can ink Carlos then we want it to be 1 year because it means he played well enough to get that 300 M he wants.

Think how miserable it would be on here if we're paying him 36 M a year and he's .709 OPS (2020) with stints on the IL.

And that makes sense. It gives Carlos and the new team a chance to test-drive each other before the real commitment happens.

You run that risk with anyone you sign to a long term deal though.

I'm willing to stomach that risk with Correa on a 6 year deal, but not the 10 that it was originally thought he would get.

On a 6 year deal, there's potential he could sign a 4 year deal for $100mm+ after his age 33 season... so he'd have plenty to play for financially.

To your point, there is injury risk. But I don't see a ton of "productivity/effort" risk.

a 1-year or 2-year deal with Correa is a big win for the Astros.

it's the long term contracts that are the killers

it is fair to wonder why Correa is not getting a Machado or Lindor-type contract offer from anyone.

have GM's finally realized how bad those deals are?

But the difference in the potential deal with Carlos and most long term contracts is the opt out.

Things go well :
  • 99.9% Carlos opts out and gets a bigger check.
  • 0.1% Carlos just loves it here and stays

Things go poorly:
  • 100% Carlos opts in and gets a fairly big check for 5 more years.

As I've said (and others) the way we keep Carlos is an Arenado type deal (8/260 with opts outs in year 4 and 5). This is the best case scenario happening. Lets hope it plays out.

I thought the Os did.

Earlier this week, the bomb was dropped on the baseball world that the beginning of the season would be delayed because owners are horrible people. As we sit here and wait for things to change on that front, Orioles fans were presented with a very interesting rumor coming from Raul Ramos.

He posted an article, written in Spanish, about how the Orioles had offered Carlos Correa a 10-year deal. He later appeared on the Glenn Clark Show and revealed that the offered was worth 44M per year in the first 2 years and 29M a year for the next 8. That would have made the deal worth 320 million dollars.

No one else really picked it up. Not sure if it was real or not.

If he was only concerned with money, he could take that. He'd also never sniff the playoffs again.

I think it's pretty obvious we've told Bregman to be ready to play SS this year. Whether he actually will or not is another question based on tbd circumstances.

At the end of the day, I'm happy to see it though. Even if he doesn't play an inning at SS this year, I think training like a SS will help increase his range at 3B and stay clear of the nagging soft tissue injuries he suffered from last year.

weird relationship that baseball fans have with star players. during lockouts and labor disputes, most were pro-player. now that that is concluded, most are hopeful their favorite team does NOT sign star players to mega deals, due to their tendency to become boat anchors at the end of the deal as players age
