This is a don't mortgage your future moment. I want Carlos back, but I don't want to be stupid about it. Jim has enough money to give Carlos 15/500 if he wanted to. Crane has already shown he's a "big dog" by letting smart people run this thing and then going to the max (payroll near the top and into the lux) when needed.

Agreed. I think he's a big dog all the way. But this is a top tier level big dog challenge. I was, and still am, disappointed that Springer left. CC, in Crane's own words, is a generational type player. I think the amount of talent the Astros have produced in recent years is off the charts, but now the plan shifts to how to keep his generational type guys. Alvarez and Tucker are coming up, with JV rolling off in, hopefully, 2 years. I think this year determines whether or not Bregman is a cornerstone dude as well.

No team can keep all the top guys they develop. Not enough money to do so.

So far the team has given extensions to Altuve, Bregman, McCullers, Verlander (2x), Brantley, & Gurriel. We've let Marwin, Keuchel, Morton, Cole, Springer, Greinke, & likely Correa walk. Both lists are a nice mix of homegrown and acquired talent. I think James and Jeff had a fairly high correct choice rate.

I do agree it's time to start ponying up and keeping some more of it. The obvious choice is to extend Tucker. 8/180 now. Who says no? And while we're at it, 6/120 for Yordan.

Not sure what kinda contract we could get Carlos back for but say it's a big money short term deal. I'd pass and gladly spend the money on Bauer. He's a d bag, but we could use more starting pitching.
