Not having the missed strike 3 pitch to Grandal listed is absolute horse****

The impact is based on WPA. You can't calculate the actual affect of a particular bad call, but you can say, based on historical data, how much a given call swings the win probability at the time the call is made. Runners on base, outs/innings remaining, and the count in which the pitch is thrown are some of the factors that help determine the call's impact.

Has anyone seen an official MLB comment on Grandal's play? I'm waiting to see if they want to officially bless the "runner can run in any direction and intentionally get hit" Theory. Surely someone will ask them to comment on that rule.

Get ready for them to say it was 100% legal beside whatever actual rule (intentional interference or "right of way") is on the books. This is the same organization that took 100+ years to enforce the foreign substance rule.

Quote:

Interference would be called only if Grandal intentionally got in the way of the throw. All six umpires huddled on the infield grass, eventually declaring there was no intention.

"We decided that there was no interference because on that play, where the ball is hit to the infield and then coming back to the plate, that 45-foot line does not even come into play," crew chief Tom Hallion said. "The batter established his basepath when he came out of the box and started running. He didn't veer off. He didn't throw up his shoulder. He did nothing intentional to get hit with that ball."

Not from the MLB office but I'm pretty sure this is the most we'll get.

What are you heathens eating tonight during the game?

I've got leftover chili from when the Astros won game 1 and 2 of this series, and leftover queso from when the Aggies beat Bama. My plan tonight is to combine them.

Nice to see Hallion doubling down on his idiocy.

He is catcher, he knew he was getting in the way. With that said, I have no problem with him running that path, that is his choice, and a great move to make the 1st baseman throw around you. Take a chance and see what happens, the problem comes when he moves his arm out a little to deflect/get hit by the ball.

Hallion is such a ****ty ump. He was not watching Grandal on the play so he has no idea what he did. He absolutely veered off his original base path.

I'll bet if you could back and watch every hit this year for Grandal you would never see him take that path. Obvious interference

I can understand the "path" argument more if he was a right handed hitter. However, if left handed hitter, he had to veer outside direct line to establish the path to begin with so would seem have to assume intent is to interfere with the throw. How is this any different from a player running to second on a double play ball and who does not get out of away throw? I was always taught that would be an automatic out and assume same intent to interfere applies to that play?
Mathguy64

Great, So Hallion decides Grandal did nothing to interfere with the throw. Except he did. Is that not appealable? Doesnt Dusty have a challenge? Not that I think NY would overturn it but at least it puts them on the spot to officially say "nothing here, its legal to deflect a throw wit your arm".

Funny thing is if an Astro tries it tonight he'll get called out for interference.

Does that idiot white Sox player think we were stealing signs in the first 3 innings when we scored 6, and then quit?

I had to turn the game off last night after 6 innings, we were getting screwed left and right by the dam ump, terrible that MLB lets some jack ass like this call those games

Im sure that MLB would much rather see the White Soxs vs Red Soxs in the finals.. but this is all bull S H I T.. I hope we have better luck with the ump tonight

Sure didn't seem like it, but I think this was through the 4th inning last night. Probably seemed less because his miss calls had a huge effect on the game.

The homeplate umpire for game 4 is Vic Carapazza who I've discovered, after a little googling, is almost as bad as last night's jackass

I'd like the Astros to sign Whitney Mercilus to a one-day contract. Have him lay down a bunt, or just pretend like he has made contact, and sprint as hard as he can right into Carlos Rodon - totally legal play by baseball rules.

Is what I saw. Top 30 a lot better than top 90. It appears he has helped Astros out in past.

I'd be curious to see who the top 10 are.

This guy has had his trial delayed since 2018, claiming he's too sick to stand trial. If this is really him, maybe they can finally get this guy in a court room.

A federal fraud case against a former Lincoln-Way School District 210 superintendent was once again delayed over his unspecified medical issues.

The next status hearing for Lawrence Wyllie was scheduled for Sept. 20, which will mark roughly four years since Wyllie was charged with misappropriating funds from Lincoln-Way for his own benefit and concealing the district's true financial health from the public.

Next time, Yuli needs to beam one right in between his eyes and see how he feels about intentionally blocking the path. See if he can react in time to get out of the way of 90 mph.
