This is the best 4 way and 3 way tiebreaker explanation I have seen.

https://www.mlb.com/news/american-league-wild-card-tiebreakers-explained

In every scenario for playing it out Boston holds the edge for the decision process. They will get to decide on playing two away or one at home in the three way scenarios and in the 4 way they will choose first and get home games throughout.

So if the Giants and Dodgers end up tied after today, I guess they will play Monday and then the loser plays in the wild card Tuesday. Is that right? That's crazier than what's happening in the American League I think.

They don't go based on head to head for the season?

Not for this. Giants own H2H so they'd host game 163.

For division, they play a 163rd game. Head to head just determines home field

They are tied in the regular season and play to decide the division winner. The H2H decides where and that's SF.

That's kind of dumb. It should just be head to head

By the way, Da Jankees and Red Sox are guaranteed at least one more game, whether it's game 163 or the WC. The worst they can finish is in a tie.

Just went through the off-season thread a bit looking at predictions. A few will be right with either a win or a loss today. Obviously hoping to finish out with 95 wins.
Good job Farmer with picking LMJ as Astros Cy Young.

If it was up to me and I could just, you know, go out there and sign my own contract here, obviously I would stay here. But that's not up to me. That's up there with the front office.

It is up to you what contract you sign Carlos.

Just got back from the A&M and trying to catch up.

We clinched home field.
TED robbed a 3 run HR and later hit an oppo taco 2 run.
Yordan and Castro continue to mash.
Odo still kind of sucks.
We still got a shot at a 4 way tie for the wild cards.
And if we win tomorrow my preseason prediction is dead on.
and Yuli is the American League batting champion

Looks like Rod Carew in 72 is last time someone won AL with .318 average. Typically in .330s

Definitely emphasizes it's a different game in terms of average.
yes, I think league-wide batting average is down this year.

not quite as low as 1968 when Yaz won the AL batting title with a .301 average. But Yuli will be happy to have his name mention in the same breath with Rod Carew

Yuli Gurriel. 2021 AL Batting Champion but not an AL All Star

Further proves they should do all Star voting at the end of the season rather than 90 games in

from the standpoint of the Astros, White Sox, and Rays...

the Red Sox are the desired playoff opponent (over NYY or Toronto).

so would like to see Boston win today

I want a night game for Friday night since I have a ticket and can't go if it's during the afternoon

Whichever team gives us the best chance for that is who I'm rooting for

Really think it would matter? Hell, weren't his stats better, still top 5 in BA at the time of the all star game? To me, it just exemplifies how it's a popularity contest and not a true all-stars. Yuli, candidate for a gold glove and the batting champion isn't an all star. Golden boy trout is automatically on the roster, and a starter, even though he missed what seems like half the season to that point.

For a long time, I have been ehh on handing out a long-term contract to him, but recently I have kind of changed my mind. If we make a deep playoff run, I feel pretty strongly they need to meet his demands even if it's 300M+. He is the undisputed team leader

This is why there should be an alternate broadcast for all playoff games called by home team announcers

Correa is the man, but this is by far his best whole season in his career, and its mostly because he has been "healthy" all year long. He's hit in clutch situations... calms pitchers down, talks for the team... I would hate to see him in another uni. He is the best defensive SS I have seen ever in Houston. I can't see Bregman filling that gap.

All of that being said, $30M/year for a decade is hard to justify for nearly anyone. I feel like if he agreed to sign for 8 years, or less, or for 10 years with less money, I would think the team would do it.

I hope TED is hunting fastballs over the plate because I really want him to get to 30 bombs this year.

I assume potential games 163 & 164 count towards the batting title. Vladdy Jr could go on a run and make a move. I doubt it, but stranger things have happened.

Interesting chance for Uncle Mike. It will take a 4-4 day but he can pass Yuli if he does that. To go 4-4 you have to start 3-3. That start leaves him just a hair short. But 4-4 is now in play. So does Yuli come off the bench? If he does and makes an out he will drop below Mike. Or does he see if Mike actually goes 4-4 and then come off the bench and try for a hit?

While I was watching last night's game, I came away with the firm realization that Correa is, indeed, the leader of the club in more ways than one.

Even though he was not in the lineup, whenever something happened on the field, and the camera spanned to him, he was up in the dugout high-fiving, back slapping, offering congratulations to any and everyone.

I've watched him whisper in Dusty's ear followed by a decision that were implemented and proven successful.

if we lose him, this team will suffer off the field as well as on it.

Pay the man.

He's clearly got the best arm but IMHO Adam Everett was the better pure defensive player. He was butter smooth.
