For those wanting to deal Greinke--I believe he has a no trade clause in his contract. I'm not a payroll/contract expert by any means, so I could be completely off on this. I'm sure someone can shed some light if I am.

If the NTC is the same as was rumored when he was with the Dbacks, he has the Orioles, Red Sox, Reds, Rockies, Tigers, Yankees, A's, Padres, Giants, Cardinals, Blue Jays, Angels, Dodgers, Twins, and Phillies on his list. Add the Dbacks and Houston, and you only have 13 teams left to trade him to without his permission.

The Astros "bought high" on Greinke. It was a gamble to get the '19 WS championship that almost paid off. Part of that was swallowing the contract that he had. I'm not sure any other team is going to want to eat that.

This was my question from earlier, how is revenue loss and expected revenue loss from lack of fans in the building going to impact free agency.

In the middle of my rambling about free agent OFers, we have an opportunity to turn our outfield defense into something elite.

2020 OOA
Tucker +4
Straw +2 (low on attempts)
Springer +1
Brantley +1
Reddick -5 (tied in dead last)

2020 OOA (free agent options)
JBJ +7 (tied in first)
Grossman +4
Marisnick +8 in 2019 (didn't play enough in 2020 & limited attempts in 2019 but still up there)

I imagine it is going to be huge across the board. George is so unlikely that this is the year he finally hits the market. There isn't a megastar in this FA class so we might not see anyone break the bank.

That amount does not seem undoable for Astros.

I'm guessing a lot of owners/GMs will be echoing similar statements. Relations with the MLBPA aren't too great right now and this sort of tactic helps keep $$ in the owners' pocket.

Get ready for another offseason of owner/union grappling.

You guys ever realize that our GM is one letter away from being named Jiminy Glick?

For George I would throw 3/85m at him and hope it sticks

3 is never going to stick...even if youre overpaying for those 3

Got to hope with this market that it does. The Astros will have to overpay him a little since they kind of him on when they brought him up.

I see 0% chance he takes lass than 4 years. I would find a way to do 4/100-110....5/120-125

RF Tucker - same

CF Springer 140 OPS+ vs JBJ 118 (-22)
George gets 4 year 100 M and JBJ gets 3 year 30 M. We save 15 M in 2020 and 70 M over the lift on the contract.

LF Brantley 126 OPS+ vs Pederson/Markakis platoon ~124 OPS+ (-2)
I am unsure of what Brantley will get, but Pederson and Markakis should both we cheap. Maybe we save a few million too. Gives you more options at DH or when injuries happen.

This isn't factoring Reddick ABs. More Tucker in the OF and less at DH.

But making moves like this, you can feel fine about committing 200 M to Correa for the next 8 years. You lose some offense, but make up a little in defense (JBJ) to give more cap flexibility for Correa or anyone in the future. I worry 35 year old George is not going to be anywhere near 29-31 year old George.

Oh I know. I don't like the guy, but he can crush righties.

In 2019 he had a .920 OPS vs righties. We'd all get over it real quick if he did that for us.

Yeah, it doesn't sound like Crane is backing up the Brinks truck to Springer's garage. I could easily see a situation where they offer a starting bid to say they tried, with certainty that another club will offer more in either dollars or years. I could see a 4 year, $90 million type of contract that Springer has no choice but to reject. Save face and money.

I been looking at the Astros payroll.. I was surprise that we have the 4th largest payroll in baseball.. how far we have come from being one of the lowest a decade ago.

Looking specifically at Springer contract.. he is currently making $21M. we can get him to $26M and Brantley to $20M .. if and only if we don't resign Reddick.. which frankly we can do w/ Tucker ($568K) taking his spot... that gives us $13M to maneuver. .. that leaves us $3M space to sign some arms and centerfielders. The only catch is that we will need some trade space in 2022 to resign Correa.

Our Highest Contract
Verlander - $33M UFA - 2022
Greinke - $32M UFA - 2022
Altuve - $26M UFA - 2025
Springer - $21M UFA - 2021
Brantley - $15M UFA -2021
Reddick - $13M UFA -2021
Bregman - $11M 2023 - $28.5M UFA - 2025
Osuna - $10M UFA - 2022
Correa - $9.1M UFA -2022
Gurriel - $8.3M UFA - 2023

Altuve - $26M
Springer - $21M
Brantley - $15M
Reddick - $13M
Bregman - $11M
Osuna - $10M
-We're only paying like $21 of Greinke (Dbacks sent $$ in the trade)
-Reddick gone
-Osuna will be non-tendered
-Bregman counts $20 toward the cap
-Should hopefully get insurance for JV
-Arb raises due for Correa/LMJ
-Springer OR Brantley almost certainly gone

If Springer and Brantley are no-go's, I'd definitely see if 2 years, $18 million would snag you Bradley Jr. He may get 3 years, but maybe not...

I looked at Greinke contract and it is better then that.. Greinke's adjusted salary with the Houston Astros is $6,950,617 .. ok he was a steal.. but no chance we sign him in 22.

You are ignoring 3 huge years from 17-19 where Bradley was god awful. If anything the COVID year should be the year we all look at with skepticism.
scrimp

I think you're looking at the COVID adjusted salary for the 60 game season.

Also of note on Greinke:

  • $62.5M deferred to 2022-2026, makes present day contract value $193,849,298
  • Limited No Trade (15 team block)
  • Trade Assignment Bonus: $2M (paid by Arizona - 2019)
  • Arizona pays additional $3.3M in 2019, $10.3M in 2020, & $10.3M in 2021.

Not sure who is on the hook for the deferred payments...

Yea this year is $6.9M ..you are right next year the Astros pay $24.6M .. so we have to cover that difference as well.. fun

And he was pretty dang good in 15 & 16. Hard to tell what you're going to get. His defense has been pretty consistent from what I can tell. That is why he's 1/4 of the price of someone like Springer. Maybe he'll play like 2018 ALCS JBJ.
