It wouldn't be ruined just makes the regular season mean a **** ton less. It would also mean fewer super stacked teams because you just need to be good enough to make the postseason then anything happens.

Why even have a regular season? Baseball as we know it would be ruined.

  • Trade deadline? Gone. Useless.
  • Pennant races? Who cares. You'll get into the playoffs at below .500 anyway. I don't care which 78-84 team snags the 8 seed
  • You think days off are bad now? Wait until the margin of error is that much bigger--you'll see a worse product on the field.

In baseball, you prove your worth over 162 games. then the playoffs are a crapshoot of small sample sizes. To put over half of each league into the playoffs basically invalidates the regular season on a full-schedule.

There is only one reason the owners are doing this - more playoff games and playoff revenue, and it actually decreases the incentives to sign major free agent deals. The mega deals are already on the way out for all but a handful of players, but this exacerbates that even more. If there's less chance of me missing the playoffs, then I don't need that one extra veteran hitter to put me over the top. The player's union would be nuts to agree to this, but they probably will anyway.
