I completely agree. I always thought the one game wild card "play in" was way too much of a crap shoot, especially if a team had to use their ace on the final day of the season to win their way in and he never got to pitch again in the postseason.

Since there is no home field advantage with fans and atmosphere, you should win a 3 game series against a sub .500 team

It might make sense to go for the 8 seed at this point. Our biggest weakness is rotation depth. a 3 game series means we can use JV, Greinke, & LMJ. We don't need Urquidy or James to start.

How can we make are 60 game sprint to the finish less interesting

Well neither does the MLB. (Cough nationals cough) We rarely ever get a WS matchup between the two best teams in the MLB

Wild cards win titles or pennants quite often. We did in 2005.
Angels 2002, Red Sox 2004; Cardinals 2011; Giants, in 2014; and the Nationals, 2019.


Heck our 2017 team was the 3rd best team record wise in the MLB behind the Indians and Dodgers

Money grab plain and simple. Might as well drop to an 81 game schedule and wrap up before football from here on out.

Except all seeds 1-8 will play 3 game series. So it doesn't help to be the 8

Top 2 teams in each division make it. Last two teams are wild card

Round 1: Seeds 1-8, best of 3
Round 2: best of 5
Round 3: LCS best of 7

Urquidy and Alvarez's unexplained absences have been very odd. Since neither has a full year of service time in the bigs, I wonder if we have the option of holding them out a week to gain an extra year of team control. Also possible this rule doesn't apply to them because both were called up last year. Not sure all the rules/fine print in effect this year.

If the 16 team format was implemented last year this would have been the AL Playoffs

#1 Astros vs #8 Rangers
#2 Yankees vs #7 Red Sox
#3 Twins vs #6 Indians
#4 Athletics vs #5 Rays

So likely would have turned out the same in the end with Astros/Rays and Yankees/Twins in the best of 5 round

From what I've seen it's traditional bracket. Division winners 1-6 seeds and 7-8 wild card
