In 1979, for really the first time in Astros history, they played September games that mattered. They were in the NL West division race with the Reds, who came to town for a series. On a rare occasion that my family had seats somewhere besides the cheap gold level (lower level, third baseline), in a sold out, rocking Astrodome, we watched JR Richard pitch 11 innings. That's not a misprint or a hazy memory, he pitched 11 innings. JR didn't come out for the 12th and the Astros won 3-2, so 11 innings and a no decision. I don't remember how the game was won, just the dominant performance of one of the best Astros pitchers of all time.
