I might be in the minority here, but after watching it 50 times, I don't think he nailed Lucroy on purpose. You can see him take a hard step to his right, and then a hard step left. To me, it was obvious that he was indecisive on which way to go

Didn't see this posted here yet... Lucroy collision yesterday vs. the Astros. Thoughts on what punishment Marisnick should receive?

I think it should be around 3 games. (that's my attempt at an objective punishment, my hatred for the Astros makes me think 10 games)

I don't think he was going for a huge collision. I think he just made a really stupid decision to take an inside line in a situation where almost no one would take the inside line. The way the MLB wants those plays called now justifies a couple of games.

What I can't believe, however, is the Astros fans actually thinking that calling him out was an egregious call. I can see attempting to make the claim that it wasn't a dirty play, but there's no way you don't call him out there.

I haven't read the Astro thread on this, and am not going to either. None of them can be objective.

The ball is coming from the right side of the field. Because of that, the runner almost surely would want to take an outside path. And even if you are going inside, he went so far inside and wound up taking Lucroy out.

Haven't heard an update on Lucroy yet, but hopefully he's not hurt too bad. I believe he has had concussion issues in the past.

I did read the Astros thread last night and, as expected, 97% are defending Marisnick. When I saw the highlight yesterday it looked intentional to me. I couldn't understand why he took the inside track on a play like that. It appeared to me that JM was trying to separate Lucroy from the ball. It may have just been a boneheaded decision but it looked I intentional to me. I like to think I would be able to objective about it had it been a Ranger but I can't fully commit to that either.

Lucroy has some culpability here. He was blocking the plate without the ball. And if you watch the replay looking up the line, Lucroy shifts backwards then forwards and the baserunner has to shift forward thinking he was getting the most direct path.

I think 3 games is fair - gotta be some punishment.

Blocking the plate is no longer legal in baseball. That's on Lucroy IMO.

I don't see Lucroy blocking the plate, though. He is inside the baseline up until the point he is trying to make a catch. I can see JM stepping in and then back out and, to me, that's what seems intentional on his part. He may not have been trying to bulldoze Lucroy like he did, but I think he was trying to interfere with the catch and the end result was the collision.

Hell, JM may not even know what he was thinking in the heat of the moment.

He wasn't blocking the plate when he set up. He still wasn't blocking the plate when the ball forced him up the line a bit. For whatever reason the runner took the inside line directly into the catcher. That's on the runner 100% as stated by the rules. I don't even see how it is arguable.

I had only seen the one viewpoint when I posted. After seeing the 2nd viewpoint from AggieTony's post, Marisnik clearly altered his route to initiate the contact.

I don't think he is "really" blocking the plate either. With his left foot somewhat, but there is always a path to the plate for the runner along the outside to slide and tag the plate with his hand/arm. Plus, with the ball coming from the right side of the field, Lucroy has to set up in the front portion of the plate to receive the ball. He doesn't want to set up behind it and offer the runner the inner part of the plate (ball might deflect off runner).

Wasn't intentional
Split second decision mistake
Runner will be suspended a few games as a lesson learned.

That's a tough one. I think JM was expecting Lucroy to catch the ball and then swipe to his left assuming the runner would be taking an outside path. JM probably thought he'd catch him off guard and go back inside, but it was a tough throw to handle, Lucroy didn't really get it cleanly, and remained on the inside part of the path leading to a collision. Should be called out at the plate, and get a small suspension since Lucroy wasn't blocking the plate and the runner initiated contact.

Edit: should still add that it was a stupid decision. If he stays to the outside and does a normal slide he beats that throw easily and all of this would've been avoided

I'm with the posters who don't think Marisnick was going for the big collision.

He was on the inside and it appears to me he was trying to get down and around Lucroy.

Lucroy moved a lot to the inside in that split second before the collision.

Penalize him for needing to take a little more care and caution in a situation like that, but I don't see intent to blow up Lucroy.

The one thing that I think is very disappointing is that Astros manager Hinch actually challenged the play, I know it's at the end of the game and an important play, but after Lucroy got hurt like that...... man what an epic ******bag.

Lucroy was on the fair side of the baseline and stayed there the entire time. If it was an accident, it was possibly the most braindead approach to the plate I've ever seen. Had a clear path straight to the plate or outside the entire time and there was never a hint it would change.

Wrong

He was originally called safe. Why would Hinch challenge a play that was called in his favor?

It may have been Ausmus challenging but I think it was a crew chief review to take a closer look.

Try again

That, however, doesn't mean that Hinch is NOT an epic ******bag.

The bottom line is that Marisnick knew there was a play at the plate and didn't even attempt to slide. If he slides into Lucroy and Lucroy is blocking the plate, there's an argument to be made against the Angels. By not even trying to slide it is obvious he was looking for contact. Even if he saw Lucroy starting to move towards the line, there is more room to slide in safe at the back of the plate than the fair territory side. Not really sure how you can defend Marisnick without saying he's just too dumb to make the right play.

The AL has won 19 of the last 22 All Star games. The Rangers two pennant seasons not being two of them drives me insane.
