Late a tie game, needing base runners, Odor, emboldened by recent success, strikes out while swinging for the fences. Figures.

The Odor fan boys will be along shortly to chastise you for your statement.

Dallasag is going to come after you with some odor stats from an obscure game in Detroit 4 years ago.

Too bad that doesn't tell you everything there is to know about his approach to the game. k% is not the end all be all stat
Thank you for pointing out how idiotic that statement was. He essentially just said that if two people travel 100 miles - one by automobile, one by walking - their approach is the same because the distance traveled is identical.

Anyone who suggests Joey doesn't have a drastically different approach at the plate needs to spend a bit more time watching and learning the game. It is clear as day. As a microcosm, seeing him take a called 3rd strike down the heart of the plate with two outs and the bases loaded late in yesterday's game tells you he's looking/thinking differently.
I'm guessing neither of you read the DMN article Schall linked.

I'll help you:
Quote:

Joey Gallo gets it. He bought in early, working to cut down on what might have been the biggest strike zone in ball. He still bears some of his bad traits, Woodward said, but they're contained in a manageable strike zone.
That implies his K% should have come down. But it hasn't. He is no longer swinging at bad pitches, but still striking out with similar frequency.

That's actually not what that implies at all, or at the very least it's not the only thing it might imply.

The middle of this line up can not come up with a big hit.

I have to admit that it's unexpected when he comes through, but I'm happy for him and the rest of the guys in blue.

HELLO WIN COLUMN!

Glad we finished on a positive note for the ASB. Thank goodness for the ASB. I'm hoping for a great rest of the season.

It was a good run. It had been fun. Not so much anymore. I probably won't be back this season... Enjoy the ride.

In my opinion, everyone should continue to post here and contribute in their own way. Obviously, there is a divide regarding Odor, but he's just one guy. There's a lot more about the team to support and discuss.

Nobody knows how this will look a month from now. It it starts to slip away, it'll get very quiet around here and the more dialogue the better. If it goes the way we all want it to, then we should enjoy discussing it with other.

I appreciate everyone's input - whether I agree with it or not. Have a good week, guys.

Odor is a very controversial player. Before his home run today, he had struck out in 5 of his last 9 at bats or so. You can't make things happen if you don't put the ball in play.

This thread, like the rangers fan base in general, seems to be split on odor. I listen to rangers radio and most opinions on odor are negative when fans call in. The only ranger fan I know personally who likes odor is my mother and she's a very casual baseball fan. All of the other fans I know personally ( about 15 different people) think he's awful.

He's very polarizing because he lacks consistency and he's prone to boneheaded mistakes more than most other players, but a lot of people like him because he has the appearance of the scrappy underdog. It's easy to root for the little guy to win.

With that said, I'm glad that the break is here. This team has looked lethargic ever since they got to Tampa bay. The untimely passing of Tyler Skaggs might have had an effect on this team during the angels series, but I'm ready for the break.

I don't know where we're headed or how well we're going to do, but I hope we can at least beat the Astros as much as possible the next few weeks and go from there,

Have a great week gentlemen.

As has been said before, Odor has to continue to get time due to the economics of the game. The Rangers made a significant financial investment in him and cannot afford to eat many tens of millions of $$$.

What I would love to know is if his approach at the plate is what the Rangers want him to be doing or what HE wants to be doing. He can be a really good MLB player by utilizing the tools he has, but either he or the team wants him swinging for the fences on every pitch. He thus is a strikeout machine and a black hole in the lineup.

As y'all know, I'd rather this season go down the tubes and the team get prospects for our veteran players. There is NO reason to think the success of Lynn, Minor and Pence is sustainable past this season. We need Pence to get back on the field so his trade value can be maximized.

Choo only has one more year left after this season - we're getting to the point where we might not have to pay too much of his contract to get someone to take him and give us something decent in return. The man does get on base.

No, actually it's not. Reason being, it's not a true sunk cost. Even if you believe that Odor is a lost cause (which I do not), he and his contract still have a fluctuating value as a trade piece. The Rangers have incentive to further invest in him in order to improve his value.

Palumbo back to AAA:
Quote:

Texas Rangers transactions: Joe Palumbo, the lefthanded pitcher who was called up for today's game, has been optioned to AAA Nashville, the team announced after the game. A corresponding move will be made Thursday, when the Rangers play again.

This move was expected, as Palumbo came up just to fill in for Mike Minor, whose start was being skipped. Palumbo didn't appear until the fifth inning, but he threw three shutout innings, and now will presumably return to Nashville's rotation. Hunter Pence will reportedly not be ready to be activated Thursday, but if you are looking for who may get the call Thursday, lefty reliever Kyle Bird had a scoreless inning for Nashville tonight and has 13.2 consecutive scoreless innings.

If you are wondering why Palumbo was sent down now, rather than Thursday, it is because he has to stay down for 10 days before being recalled (unless he's replacing someone going on the injured list). This allows them to recall Palumbo four days earlier than if they waited until Thursday, should it be necessary.

A sunk cost doesn't mean there isn't incentive for the object to gain value.

But I do agree that there is still some theoretical "recovery" of the financial costs to be had with Odor, which means Odor is not a pure sunk cost.

I don't think that means they have to play him every day.

They could platoon him, putting him in situations they think he's most likely to succeed, and try to build him back up that way. They could still send him down, get the point across that he needs to change, and have him work on that.

This is the question that I'd love to hear a candid answer to from Woody and JD. I can see the Bannister and the previous regime being ok with the all or nothing approach. But with the new regime not so much.
