He led them to a pennant and won an MVP with them in his contract so far.

I'd say it's been worth it. I also think there's a good shot they are back in the World Series soon with their core.
I definitely agree he's been worth it....now. But the thing of these 13 year contracts is it's almost never worth it towards the end. He has 9 years left. And he's not a smooth swinging slugger, imo. He has a violent ass swing. Who knows how long he can maintain that...

Harper had a UCL strain earlier in the year and went on the DL if I remember correctly. He can't throw so has been DHing since he came back. Not a new development. He can still hit but not play in the field.

Now we learn of Tommy John surgery for Harper? Yikes. That may be a consequence of the swing you referred to.

Revisiting this one.

Thru 6 years Harper has been paid ~144 M. Over those 6 years Fangraphs has put his play at a value of 190.6 M.

Thus far, he's been a huge value on the field. Off the field, he's the face of the franchise and the leader of the team. He switched positions to help the team, making his contract age more friendly.

I think those who spoke out against this contract may need to start eating some crow. Generally, I am against these types of deals. But the true upper-echelon player is probably worth it.

I don't think anyone argued against the first half of the deal.

He's outperformed it by a significant margin that it will likely make up for the 2nd half.

W did, he always hates big contracts.

The economics of sports contracts obviously is complicated when trying to decide on what someone is worth. But you can't get guys like Harper, Ohtani, Soto on your team for their primes without knowingly overpaying for their decline. It's a tradeoff that is absolutely worth it in my mind.

Rangers won a world series by bringing in Semien and Seager. I don't care one bit about the last 3 years of those contracts. Team decided it wanted to win, and they went out and got the players to make it happen.

Now Juan Soto will be making an average of 51MM/year for the next 15 years. Harper is a deal.
