I vaguely remember that incident too.

Wasn't it Hampton who was tearing out of the pen and first on the scene?

IIRC, doesn't Tony have our longest hitting streak? The way I remember, he had been on tear, but only played off and on so the streak lasted what seemed like forever. My fuzzy recollection has him batting as a pinch hitter in a couple games of that as well.

Spiers was a .288 career hitter for the Astros

I know what I will be drinking this season!
I'll give it a shot. Buffalo Bayou's Crush City IPA is delightful. Dome Faux'm is also tasty. St. Arnold's has Orange Show. Karbach had to get on the Astros train.

He set it back in 2000, but has since been beaten (twice, once by Kent, once by Taveras). His is definitely most unique.

I think Tony was unique because he batted like 235 during the hitting streak

And probably had 4-5 pinch hit games to keep the streak alive

And lasted 2 months

I'm sick of these ball players complaining

According to the Astros daily link:

Quote:

He batted .409 during the streak, collecting 36 hits in 88 at-bats,
But he was a relatively poor hitter for a hitting specialist.

I don't even know what he's complaining about, fans like winning more than they like personalities. He's upset because advanced statistics are helping owners and GM's evaluate player's likeliness to win more accurately than he likes?

No one is forcing them to play. Dallas is holding out on his own, Im sure he can work if he wants. Hell he can always sell his Ferrari and get a real job.

Player salaries need to be held in check. They're getting ridiculous. I'm sorry guys might only have to make $10M instead of $30M per year to play a game, Evan. Go check what some of the games greats made.

One of the first comments nailed it:
Quote:

iandicarlo: You're owed 72.5 million over the next 5 seasons and had .4 WAR last year. And people wonder why clubs don't want to shell out these high AAV, 7-10 year contracts. More often then not, these players turn into a player like you.

Longoria is complaining? The Giants front office (and their fans) would drop his contract in a heartbeat.

he's on the books for 4 more years and already on the downhill slide

it is funny...all the media pundits (and especially ESPN) were saying for a year that Machado and Harper were going to get 10-year $300 MM contracts.

time is running out for both

To be fair, Harper turned down 10/300 from the Nats already.

In the span of 20 years, the biggest contracts have gone up 100%

I'm pretty sure for everyday Joe American his wages haven't doubled

There's no doubt with the squalor like conditions in the minor leagues we will see some CBA scuttle to make teams pay more money there and we'll see less bad contracts to the likes of Evan Longoria.

Astros are already out in front on this (and lost with Jon Singleton)

Baseball economics would be fine if you could just cut people that suck. I'd love to see some rule like only 1st 3 years garaunteed or if cut you only have to pay a certian % and if they resign with anyone you are completely off the hook. No industry operates where you can hugely overpay for performance (or lack thereof).

So my wife is out of town this weekend and I kicked off the weekend tonight by watching games 1-2 of the 2017 World Series. I know Game 2 was a thriller in the end, but damn did we have good ABs. Worked counts and madenpurchers best is in the zone. That was missing in the playoffs last year. Hoping we get that back next year.

Usually about one a week I hear Joe Buck's voice in my head saying "High fly ball... Goodbye! One pitch to Springer and we're tied again."

Not only did the Astros win a World Series, they did it in some pretty epic fashions.

Indeed they did. Also, has anyone ever overmanaged their bullpen worse than Roberts did in that series??

Hinch basically pulled a Roberts this year, but to a lesser extent. Hoping Hinch reverts back to 2017 playoffs bullpen usages 2019z

Why? I believe they're getting a slightly smaller % of the overall split with the owners after the last few years. Don't be shocked it we get another strike in 2-3 years whenever it's time to renegotiate.
iBrad

The players only have themselves to blame. They were overly concerned with off days and afternoon games on get away days during the last CBA.

But yes, a strike is looming because the players want changes and they have nothing to offer the owners to make those changes.

I think agents and players just need to adjust and stop expecting long-term deals. They just aren't going to happen very often now.

I mean Dallas had a $90MM contract in front of him and he declined it.

Another strike would be devastating for the game itself. Count me in as a fan that would be a little disgusted by the players if that happened again.

Maybe it's just my perception, but it seems like the overall interest in basketball is waning a little bit, so a strike could very well cripple MLB.

Why blame the players?

If the owners are getting more and more of the revenue split then what should the players do?

the players are upset and concerned because the number of dumb GM's is shrinking.

not as many around anymore that give out absurd contracts like the ones to Pujols, Cano, Giancarlo, et al

I feel like the split between ownership and players should be 60-40 but closer to 50-50.

I'm surprised some agent hasn't tossed out the word "collusion" yet. With Harper, Machado and Keuchel all turning down big contracts it won't stick but it seems to me that's the next card for the players to play.
