With spring training still a month away and the Boras free agency shutdown still hanging over the offseason, I guess we've resorted to critiquing men's bodies

Was thinking that he should be a little more ripped in the core

This is baseball. You don't need 3% body fat and to run 4.4.

See these "ripped" arms? They throw 99 after 8 innings or work.

McTaggert is saying that Corbin Martin is a candidate for the no. 4 or 5 starting pitching role. That seems doubtful but I'm sure pulling for him.

Astros starting pitchers

HOUSTON -- It's hard to believe Astros pitchers and catchers will be working out in West Palm Beach, Fla., in less than a month. A year ago at this time, the Astros were coming off a World Series title, but the expectations haven't changed heading into 2019.
So let's open the Inbox to see what's on your mind about the Astros as we plow closer to the pitchers and catchers report date:
Let's assume the Astros go into Spring Training without having made a significant addition to the rotation. Who could be a dark horse to make the starting rotation out of ST? Assuming that Justin Verlander, Gerrit Cole and Collin McHugh are locks with Josh James, Brad Peacock, Framber Valdez, Forrest Whitley and Corbin Martin as the main candidates for the 4 and 5 spots.

Some division news

speaking of the Angels and a team with a disastrous payroll situation...

Trout, Pujols, and Upton will make a combined $79 MM in 2019.

the Halos have 4 other players making over $10 MM per year including Kyle Calhoun and his .208 BA.

only 1 of the 7 players mentioned is a starting pitcher (Matt Harvey).

good to have a team in the division with that kind of financial mismanagement

I'm sure the rumor about Astros and Harper is not substantial, but it has me dreaming. Trade Tucker for either Realmuto or a top end starting pitcher. We could be set.

On Geoff Blum podcast

He mentions that one of the MLB network reporters said the Astros declined a straight up Tucker for Realmuto trade

Interesting if true

In light of recent pseudo news, I feel a quote of myself is warranted.
With the recent occurrence of more unsubstantiated musings on one B. Harper, I must self quote for the 2nd time.

There's part of me that thinks Boras has gone to the teams who can give Harper a mega deal (Phillies, Dodgers, maybe White Sox and Nationals) and is giving them a deadline to meet his number.

If none of them bite, then Boras lowers the number and a few other teams enter the fray. That sort of gives him leverage in the near term because the Phillies/Dodgers know he wants to play for Houston all things equal*. So if they want him, they have to pony up soon.

*in my opinion

Here's how I see the rest of the offseason playing out:

-Harper doesn't get the mega deal he's looking for and ultimately signs with the Astros. 10 year deal for less than $300. Player opt outs after years 3 and 5.

-Harper joins Bregman's YouTube channel, which is subsequently renamed "The Alpha Bros". Harper and his wife move into Bregman's condo and tons of shenanigans ensue.

-Harper immediately supplants Springer/White for best bod on the team. This causes some clubhouse friction... especially given than Springer and Harper have to share an outfield, but ultimately everything is fine.

-Then Luhnow calls the Jeter and is like "bruh.. you know you have no leverage here... let's get on with it". Jeter kneels to Luhnow's request and we acquire Realmuto for Yordan Alvarez, Kemp, two top 10-20 range pitching prospects and Reddick + cash.

-We go into the season with our 13 position players looking like this:

1) Springer CF
2) Altuve 2B
3) Harper RF
4) Bregman 3B
5) Brantley DH
6) Correa SS
7) Gurriel 1B
8) Realmuto C
9) Tucker LF

Bench: Marisnick, White, Chirinos, Diaz

-With that offense, pitching doesn't really matter. But just for laughs, I'm thinking we go into the season basically as is... with the exception of maybe rolling the dice on a Clay Buccholz type. James and Valdez get the 4/5 spots initially. Whitley gets an audition after the super two deadline. Then we re-asses around the All Star break and make a move for a starter at the deadline if needed.

Fair enough.

Eusebio's body transformation was unbelievable. He went from looking like Tony Kemp to looking like Biggie smalls pretty quickly. If he had cycled Dianabol instead of chalupas he could have been the latin Mike Piazza with that sweet stroke of his.

Quote:

Bryan Abreu, right-handed starter, Astros: Strikeouts make a pitcher stand out anywhere in pro ball, and few hurlers were more efficient at picking up K's down the stretch than the Astros' No. 10 prospect. Abreu struck out 37 of the 83 batters he faced from Aug. 1 on with Class A Quad Cities. That 44.6 percent K rate tied with Dylan Cease for tops over that span among MLB.com's ranked pitching prospects. The 21-year-old righty kept up that high rate while shifting roles; after he'd made three starts in nine appearances entering the month, four of his five August appearances were starts. Abreu earns plus grades for his fastball and curveball, and those two pitches alone were good enough to keep Midwest League batters guessing. He also improved his control dramatically, going from a 6.4 BB/9 in the Appalachian League in 2017 to a 3.8 between the Midwest and New York-Penn Leagues last season. Abreu will need to develop his slider and changeup if he's going to stick as a starter, but the K's he collected in 2018 (90 over 54 1/3 innings) will earn him longer looks.

speaking of Tony Eusebio...he owns one of the all-time great Astro quotes.

when interviewed after the game in Milwaukee...where the drunk fan came out of the stands and attacked Astros rightfielder Bill Spiers...

Eusebio said: "I've never seen that before...in America"

Spiers had a 4.4 WAR in '97 in only 291 at bat's, that's pretty damn good, 145 OPS+
