How do these teams have any legit prospects left after the last 2 seasons of trade craziness? I'd think our 4 and 5 prospects would be better than most of their 1 and 2s.....

Elias picked up Rio Ruiz off waivers today.

Quote:

Ruiz, 24, signed for well over the slot value after the Astros selected him in the fourth round of the 2012 draft their first under Elias's direction. After a few seasons with the Houston organization, Ruiz was sent on to Atlanta along with Mike Foltynewicz in the deal that delivered Evan Gattis to the 'Stros.

It'll be interesting to see and follow along with what he does with the O's.

https://www.mlbtraderumors.com/2018/12/at-least-5-teams-interested-in-josh-harrison.html

Quote:

Josh Harrison had a year to forget in 2018, leading the Pirates to buy out the veteran infielder after the season and end a relationship that began in 2009. Nevertheless, no fewer than five teams have shown interest in Harrison this offseason, according to Fancred's Jon Heyman, who lists the Astros and Giants among clubs that have at least considered the 31-year-old. Heyman previously reported interest from the Yankees, Reds and Nationals.

Harrison's coming off an up-and-down tenure in Pittsburgh, where he debuted in 2011 and managed to reach the 2.0 fWAR in two individual seasons. He was at his best during a 4.8-fWAR showing in 2014, which led the Pirates to award him an extension worth a guaranteed $27.3MM early in 2015.
Harrison went on to combine for an unspectacular 5.4 fWAR during the rest of his stint with the franchise. He was especially disappointing in 2018, when he totaled 0.3 fWAR and batted
.250/.293/.363 (78 wRC+) with minimal power (eight home runs, .113 ISO) across 374 plate appearances. While Harrison only logged a .285 weighted on-base average in 2018, he posted an even less inspiring .275 xwOBA, per Statcast. Of course, it's worth noting Harrison's season began in terrible fashion when he suffered a fractured left hand an injury that sidelined him from mid-April to mid-May and could have played a role in his drop in production.

Harrison, to his credit, is just two years removed from a 2017 campaign in which he was among the Pirates' most valuable players. He also comes with vast experience at second and third base, two positions where he has been a plus defender for the majority of his career. But it could be difficult for Harrison to garner playing time at either position in Houston, which boasts superstars Jose Altuve and Alex Bregman at those spots and also has Aledmys Diaz and Yuli Gurriel on hand as versatile options. Like the Astros, the Giants feature established players at second and third Joe Panik and Evan Longoria but those two joined Harrison in struggling last season. The Giants' new president of baseball operations, Farhan Zaidi, seems to be looking for infield help as a result.

Not sure why we would be interested in Josh Harrison. Our infield is pretty much complete (unless we are looking to upgrade first base), and we should be looking at adding left-handed hitters.

Edit: I guess he plays outfield too, but still - we should be looking at lefty hitters in my opinion.

I'm starting to get the impression that Luhnow might be saving up for the trade deadline instead of cashing in over the winter. Will we get past the winter meetings with no major action?

Reading that in an effort to dump salary the Indians are looking to attach Encarnacion in a deal for a starter.

He's owed $20M this year with a team option for next year. Bit much but for just one year it wouldn't be the worst thing to take him with Kluber or Bauer and plug him at DH or 1B.

I wouldn't be against that. Slapping a 30+ homer a year guy into the lineup.

Is there anyone who can overlay his spray chart from last year over Minute Maid? I thought there was a site you could do that on but I can't find it.

Yes, please. I wanted him over Beltran in the 16/17 offseason.

Good article about why Keuchel has little interest from teams as a free agent.

I read that as it's not even a rumor but merely a suggestion.

Kinda like if I suggested trading for Syndergaard and signing Harper. It would shore up our rotation and solidify our lineup.

BOOM...There is your not even a rumor or speculation but a suggestion.

And the Yank's asking price for Gray is laughable right now.

Quote:

The Yankees are shooting for the moon in Sonny Gray trade talks and asked the Reds for top prospect Taylor Trammell, according to Joel Sherman of the New York Post. New York has made it no secret that Gray is available this offseason and reportedly as many as 11 teams have shown interest in the right-hander. That suggests the Yankees will get a pretty decent return even though Gray just threw 130 1/3 innings with a 4.90 ERA in 2018.

MLB.com currently ranks Trammell as the 17th best prospect in baseball.

Someone will have to explain to me what the Mets are doing. They took on Cano and his salary dump but want to trade Thor. And somehow are in the mix for Realmuto. Those things together make no sense at all.

Sounds like now's the time for Luhnow to swoop in and make his move.

Yep. I think everyone except the Marlins front office knew this was inevitable. No team was going to bite when the Marlins asked for the moon, knowing their trade leverage is declining everyday they don't trade him.

A team that has been trying to acquire every pitcher is now trying to trade away one? Nothing fishy going on there.

I think if they got Realmuto then they wouldn't trade Thor.

Or maybe they think they will get an elite return for Thor. And they plan on selling higher than they bought for Cano and Diaz at the trade deadline.

The sense among some other teams is that the Marlins have begun to push to make a Realmuto trade, which is a major change in their past approach. For a year, they set a very high price and challenged anyone to meet it, and waited. Now they seem to be looking to finish a deal.

I guess the Yankees reminded Jeter of who he works for.

If they think that they are nuts. Baseball players aren't houses to flip. Old expensive ones do not increase in value. No mater how many coats of paint you slap on them.
