It didn't cost us anything while we figured out who we needed to protect for the rule 5 draft and how many open spots we need heading into the offseason. This is fairly common. We have an attractive depth chart now. I think he will be interested in a minor league contract with a chance to compete for a roster spot in the spring.

dammit - he is a nice part of my championship AL only fantasy baseball team. Sucks for me, but great for the Astros. Why are the Mariners tanking this season? Thought they had a damn competitive squad. I guess they looked at the Astros and said we're not gong to compete for the next five years - lets build for the future?

They were not nearly as talented as their record suggested. It's a lot smarter to do this than to try stretching a window that wasn't really open in the first place because of one season's good fortune.

And even the As aren't projected to do all that well next year. We may revert back to 2017 levels where to lock up the division very early.

At just 26, a 10-year deal to Harper isn't quite as asinine as it is to 29-31 year old free agent. His age is going to allow some teams to stretch things out a little more than they otherwise would. And just because he turned down $300M over 10 years doesn't mean he wouldn't sign for less. I think it just means he wants out of Washington.

If he does like Houston, then it's worth seeing what you might be able to do. See if he'll take $180M for 6 years with a couple of option years that vest based on performance.

You're probably right, but Boras client JD Martinez signed a deal that was significantly less than what they were aiming for last offseason. He signed it right around spring training too IIRC.

The longer things drag out with Harper, the more possible it seems that we could sneak in late and snatch him. Seems unlikely for sure, but if he really does have an affection for us, maybe it's possible?
