The batter "makes contact with the ball" or the batter "hit the ball." The batter does not struck the ball.

When did the word "struck" start being used in place of "hit?"

Struck is the past tense of strike

strike
/strk/
verb

hit forcibly and deliberately with one's hand or a weapon or other implement.
"he raised his hand, as if to strike me"
synonyms: bang, beat, hit

So it may be a bit redundant, but I'm pretty sure it's perfect English to state that 'He struck the ball well'
