For us Ranger fans, this is the only thing to look forward to this year.

Nah. I doubt MLB wants the Machado trade to overshadow the ASG.

With no baseball until Friday my guess is that if it happens they'll sit on it until tomorrow.

everything seems to be pointing toward the National League. That makes it definitely look like a rental for 2018

Machado interview with Rosenthal during ASG made it sound like a trade to LA is all but done.

Rangers situation is interesting

Quote:

While the Rangers are expected to be Trade Deadline sellers, they may have trouble finding attractive deals for many of their key trade chips. Even Shin-Soo Choo, who entered the All-Star break on a 51-game on-base streak, is drawing little interest, according to Evan Grant of the Dallas Morning News.

Choo is owed $42 million over 2019-20 as well as the remainder of the $20 million on his deal for this season, and he also offers little defensive value, which may be why teams aren't lining up to deal for the 36-year-old.

Per Grant, the market is also tepid for starter Cole Hamels and third baseman Adrian Beltre.
Hamels has struggled some this season, allowing 21 homers in 109 1/3 innings (1.7 HR/9), and he won't come cheap. The left-hander is owed the remainder of the $23.5 million on his contract for 2018 ($2.5 million of which is being paid by the Phillies), and he has a $20 million team option with a $6 million buyout for '19.

Meanwhile, Beltre has been spending more time as the designated hitter due to injuries, and his OPS is just .739. There's also the question of whether he will consider waiving his full no-trade clause, which comes from him having 10-and-5 rights (10-plus years in the Majors, at least five with current team). The impending free agent reportedly would like to play with the Rangers in 2019 and may approve a trade only if it's the perfect situation.

Looks like contracts not really the talent is what's keeping their value down.

Would Daniels not eat money to move these guys?

Choo is an awful fielder with a train wreck of a contract. What AL contender needs a DH? A very expensive DH?

Hamels is moody and expensive. And not exactly a top of the rotation selection. What AL team in contention would want him? That severely limits the options.

Beltre is a great guy but his wheels are gone. He's a DH only at this point. Again, what AL contender needs a DH? And he's basically competing with Choo for a trade.

The Rangers waited a year too late to unload guys.

He would. Grant isn't exactly the go-to guy on trade talk. Rangers key trade chips aren't Choo/Hamels/Beltre... One is a DH with a bad contract, the other is a #4 starter on any playoff team and the last is a Carlos-Beltran-esque rental for 2.5 months if you can keep him healthy.

Kela/Profar/Diekman/LeClerc are all combination of guys that likely will have a better return than the above 3 -- but Texas isn't expecting instant impact guys.

The Rangers didn't wait a year too late. Choo was even more untradeable last year and Texas was still in wildcard contention at the deadline with Hamels and Beltre on the shelf for much of the 1st half, so trading them off would have been needlessly throwing up the white flag in July.

Pretty sure JD would definitely eat some of Choo's contract for a decent haul. Definitely limited to AL teams needing help at DH.

Hamels could help a team like the Yankees or Red Sox needing a #4 guy. His road numbers are impressive this year, at home he's been awful. Would also wonder if teams would consider his post season success. Always been a big game pitcher and that really continued his season. He's pitched his best games against playoff caliber teams this season.

Kela may be their most valuable piece but not sure if they're willing to deal him.

Why's that?

Relief pitchers and more so closers are the last thing rebuilding teams need. If he's the best asset he seems like an ideal piece to move.

I'm personally in the "trade bullpen arms as soon as there is legitimate interest" camp, but if they choose to keep him it's either because A) they think they will get a better off-season offer or B) because they think he'll be a key piece going forward.

This idea that Texas is about to go through (or really in need of) a rebuild that takes them into 2021 and beyond is something dangled only by casual fans. They've got a small core of players signed through '21/'22 and a ton of money to spend -- much of what happens next season will depend on free agency recruitment, but they aren't punting 2019 already so Kela isn't necessarily expendable.

Guess that makes sense if they haven't committed to full rebuild yet.

Typically the only teams that do a full rebuild are those hamstrung by payroll availability (either with cheap owners or a lot of big long-term contracts or both). While Texas isn't in a great spot, this was the only year that it was inevitable that they couldn't compete with Hamels, Beltre, Choo and Andrus contracts all on the books. After this year, Choo will be the lone albatross still on the payroll and a new stadium they will be selling season tickets for in the next 8 months.

Now it remains to be seen if Texas can lure the talent in free agency (something they've historically struggled to do -- but I guess we'll see how much the heat really mattered in that) -- but Texas will have a crap-ton of money to throw around.

I would like to see the Braves take a look at Beltre and Kela. Would like Beltre given how young the Braves are with Albies and Acuna.

Yeah I don't buy the "Rangers waited a year too long to trade these guys" argument. Choo is far more tradeable than he was last year at this point because there's 1 less year on that contract and he's actually playing great. There are fewer 'cons' with him this year. He was old and a bad OF last year, and he is still old and a bad defensive OF.

I do think JD will be willing to eat some of Choo's and Hamels' contracts just to move them. The more they'll eat, the better the prospect, but you're not getting a top-50 or 100 prospect regardless, unless you also toss in some bullpen pieces to sweeten the deal. Best chance is to target some high risk/high reward types in the lower levels of a system. I think if Beltre doesn't get moved, he retires after this year. He wants to win a title, but also wants to play for the Rangers next season. I think that only happens if he finishes this season elsewhere. I could see Beltre getting moved to Atlanta or Philly because of their youth.

Wonder if Nats fans are missing Dusty Baker. Didn't win them a WS but won a lot of games.

Nats have quite a few guys on expiring contracts that they could move. Could be a really busy day.
