So is the plan for our fans to try and interfere with Astros outfielders so they call Boston out?

If that is new York or Boston that is absolutely a home run. Remember Jeffery Maeir? That couldn't have been more clear that was interference and they called that a HR. Dont kid yourself that those big market teams dont get the breaks.be it from the umps or replay.

They should be leaning over and swatting any ball hit by a Boston player.

I'm hoping behind closed doors someone from mlb tells Joe he ****ed up by not calling it a HR first but that's probably giving them too much credit.

I just can't believe we're at a place where we're expecting fans to make judgement calls on fly balls that are headed right for them. It's insane.

My super hot sports take on this that I've had for a long time is they should go even further and just absolutely simplify the rule. If the fans can get that ball into the stands without using anything other than their hands and a glove, it's a home run. They can reach over, swat the outfielders glove, whatever. If you go up where the fans can reach you, you're at your own risk. If the ball hits the fans and falls in play (without ever crossing over the wall according to statcast data), then it's in play.

If the fans are part of the game, then they're part of the game. If that ball makes it over the wall, it's a home run. If it doesn't, it isn't. That simple.
1) Implement rule
2) Home team hires a bunch of seven footers with huge wingspans to sit on front row
3) ????
4) Profit

Yeah man, Imagine how much those seats would go for knowing you might be able to help your team win a game. There's a solid profitability angle in there also.

Michael Berry's interview with him this morning. Also said Reid Ryan said it was his choice to throw him out or not and didn't because he didn't do anything wrong.

I'm with you on this one. Also, it's not like those fans did anything out of the ordinary other than that guy in the white. Those guys had their hands at their chest - how are they supposed to judge what kind of play Mookie can make on a ball that is almost a foot and half above the yellow line.

It's also too severe of a punishment for something either player has no control over. We assume the defender will make a catch on some of the hardest catches in the game? In what way is that a logical assumption?

This is why I hate the PI spot foul in the NFL. It is so wildly one sided. You can't just assume a catch is to be made.

Fangraphs article about the interference call...

https://www.fangraphs.com/blogs/the-fan-interference-call-was-probably-good/

Basically says that the call was probably correct.
he also goes on about the guy in white who was holding on to the wall and reaching... but that guy never touched the ball nor the glove.
personally I think the guy in the white proves definitively it wasnt interference....he IS clearly reaching in front of the wall....BUT he doesnt touch the ball, it hit the guys who are 6-8 inches behind his arm on the fan side of the fence, their arms werent extended, the one is standing straight up maybe even leaning back with his arms tucked tight to his side..... therefore making it a homerun

Also, if Top Golf can put sensors in their golf balls, why can't baseball put a sensor in their baseballs? That could help with situations like this a ton.

Or like some of you mentioned, let's start using statcast to get the position of the ball and glove.

Eh, I like the spot foul. I hate it college when a player can just take down a receiver when they know they're beat.

I don't like any rule that can give an obvious benefit to the team that committed the foul. Basketball board-ers that also post on here have seen me make the case for years that I think teams should have the right to decline free throws and take the ball on the same principle.

Is it an out only because they were the home team? What if Boston hits that? Out or Ground Rule double?

Want an even better "what if"? What if the guy in the stands is wearing a Boston shirt or hat?

I agree with this completely. It's complete bull**** that a ball that is over the line can not be caught by a fan. Just wait for some shmuck to get hit in the face by a HR and then mlb has to deal with that.
You accept conditions on the back of every MLB ticket that exempts MLB of any damage or harm from a batted ball. Their asses are covered.

Yeah. The Meg has regressed to his mean the last several weeks. Don't eat me wrong. He was hot and you absolutely ride the hot hand. But he hit his wall and has dropped like a rock.

DH was a problem spot all year. Gattis early slumped. Then he got super hot. When he fell off White got his chance and got hot. Then he cooled rapidly.

DH is a position of need next year. Regardless of what happens tonight.

Its about time to stop calling him The Meg... in all seriousness I can come out and fully admit now that he has come full circle, I only disliked Tyler White in the beginning because I remember him sucking so bad in 2016. I obviously played along on here all season as a gag since he seemed to coincidentally do well after I insulted him... I really have nothing against the guy. He is just very very average at best.

So I am floored by the success McCann has had vs Price in his career.

Also Springer has 14 strikeouts vs Price in 24 ABs... woof

I was actually thinking about this during game 3. I got to sit front row down the third baseline and told myself before the game if a Red Sox player his a foul ball over here, I will literally box people out basketball rebound style to make sure Bregman has plenty of room to reach in and make a catch. Conversely, if an Astro hits one over here, I will do everything I can to bump Nunez/Devers' arm/glove as he's trying to make a play.

Then I kinda got to thinking, what's to stop a team from just selling front row seats to former college level baseball players who are 6'5 or taller (so they can reach over/around opposing players). Put them through a class at the beginning of the year to make sure they know what to do in each situation, and let them go to work. Over the course of a 81 home regular season games and playoffs, it could make the difference in winning a game or two. But if every other team caught on and started doing the same thing, I suppose the advantage would be offset when going to a visitors park. Still though, I think it would be an interesting experiment.

What is surprising to me is that not one fan that had a camera out during Altuve's AB got a better angle on the play even if blurry. Some higher up angle that wouldn't have the security guard blocking the view of the yellow line.

Either that or do what Reddick and Kate Upton said after the game, don't allow people on the front row.

And to those people that say there in no MLB bias towards the big market teams, there absolutely is because those teams draw in more fans which means more money. That's why NY and Boston played at primetime every game. MLB loves their big market teams. Refs in basketball tend to help out Golden State when possible by not calling certain foul shots. It happens in every sport every year because if your big market teams make it through the playoffs, it means more money. And that's what it's all about in every sport: money.
