Certainly like our chances tonight and optimistic about Cole having a bounce back start.

I'm curious if Boston essentially sacrifices tonight if we get some early runs. I could easily see Cora feeding Price to the wolves and leaving him out there even if he's getting lit up. Gives his bullpen a chance to get some rest before 2 games back in Boston. The strategy tonight by Boston should be interesting.

I swear I saw on reporter on twitter saying he was removed. Maybe not. Ill retract that until I can find the tweet.

All of what has happened the last 5 days just shows how fortunate the team was to win it all last year. Everything has to go right. You need to play well, but you need breaks going your way too.

Oh, and you need an umpire who isnt costing you runs. Lets recap that fat walrus's mistakes so far.
  • Two potential missed calls at 2B.
  • Getting hit 15 foot away from 2B by a throw so wild it would have gone into R/CF. Cost a base and potentially a run.
  • Last night's 1st inning fiasco costing 2 runs at a minimum. A call he cannot possibly see from 200 ft away while "running" from his spot in the RF line out to the field.

I think the Sox come out hacking away at JV. They have nothing to lose, and can play loose and free knowing they have 2 games in Boston and favorable umpire/MLB treatment.

I just haven't seen it anywhere, but did the fan get tossed?

I am assuming yes since the Chron put out an article so fast.

If ruled interference, there is no discretion the fan must be removed. Which makes this call even more egregious. Screwed this guy out of watching a game he paid for, ALCS front row tickets.

I went to a game against the As early in the season and there was a fan interference call in almost the exact same spot in the field. He was removed as the call was made via replay, not the call on the field, but was brought back down to his seat the next inning. I'm guessig somebody, somewhere, disagreed with the call and let te fan return.

By my count we have had 4 fan interference calls in the outfield this season. All 4 have cost us either hits or HRs. Three of them have been in roughly that same spot in RF.

If I am an OF in Houston, on any ball at the wall I am going up and putting my glove into the fans. Getting your glove hit seems to be what makes the difference.

I agree. But if Verlander does what I expect him to do, I don't think they'll be very successful in this. If we get some early runs against Boston, I'm really curious if Cora will pull Price to try and stay in the game or leave him out there, essentially give away this game, and save his bullpen for another day.

Reminds me of the Correa HR in game 1 (or 2) in last year's ALCS. It was ruled a HR on the field and left to the review to determine if a fan interfered. Textbook example of how that scenario plays out. You have to give the initial benefit to the hitter, especially when the guy making the call is 30 yards away. Joe West knew exactly what he was doing when he made that call.

Not a Astros fan, but if I am a fan in that spot, I'm not just leaving it alone. If a ball if flying at me and has crossed the wall, I'm going to try to catch it for self-preservation at least.
Nope, apparently you're supposed to stand there and get hit in the face, chest or nuts with the ball.

Only against certain teams. It's an unwritten rule

JV needs to throw all 9 innings tonight to turn the momentum.

So I pretty much moved on from the blown HR call, then I just read Betts describing now he went over and then felt the fan hit his glove and now I'm livid again.

I think Cora will leave Price out there even if the Astros get a huge lead. Burn him and save his BP. Cora has no reason to use his BP arms tonight.

I am just amazed at the focus on whether Betts would have caught it or not and the complete lack of focus on what the rule is. Apparently, in the post game, when asked about it, Betts said something to the tune of "I reached over the fence and..." Essentially proving he doesn't know the rule himself because the way he described what happened himself means it should have been a home run.

The instant his glove goes over the fence, fans can do anything they want...hold his glove closed, pull the ball out of the glove, pull the glove off his hand. Obviously no one is going to intentionally do any of those things but the point is, he gets zero protection. And certainly the fans have no obligation to get out of his way.

If the ballpark is empty, yes...I think he catches the ball. But that is totally IRRELEVANT.

To the people out there on social media (many obviously Red Sox fans) that are arguing that he didn't even go over the fence in the first place, my question is this. It is a 7 foot wall. He is a 6 foot tall man and his body is within inches of the wall. If the ball is not over the wall, why is he jumping? Does he have alligator arms? Shouldn't he have just been able to reach out and grab it and stay on his feet? It took all the extension he could get just to get close to it. He's 6 inches away from a wall that is barely taller than he is.

I just don't see how you can possibly rule the way they did. Makes me sick. I thought I would be more relaxed this year since I waited 45 years for them to win it all and they finally did last year, but I just can't get over the fact that such an obvious error most likely just played a huge role in ending our season. If anyone can come back, we can but we are just playing terrible baseball right now.
It's my understanding that INTENTIONAL interference in a situation like that can be called outside the field of play...ie...if the fan grabs his glove. But incidental interference such as the fan simply trying to catch a homerun ball cannot occur outside the field of play.

I agree...the point is in the process of say trying to catch a home run ball, they knock his glove completely off his hand, knock the ball out of his glove (even if it is clearly in his glove), push his glove closed so he can't catch it, etc.

Just saying if he is reaching into the stands, much worse interference than what happened last night can happen and the fielder is not supposed to receive any protection.

To add to your list...

- Randomly checking Maldonado's mitt for a foreign substance, while ignoring the shiny substance on the Red Sox pitchers.

- Ignoring the rules by reviewing a non-reviewable call.

Perhaps I was reading to much into it, but it seemed like when West signaled out after the fan interference review, he looked very smug and appeared to have an "I told you so" look on his face.

We got them right where we want them!

This team bounced back after losing 3 straight to NY last season

This team won a Game 7 WS on the road

We cruise tonight with a Justin "We all literally love him" Verlander masterclass

Gut check time is Saturday. Cole having two bad starts in a row? Impossible

Then our ace in the hole...Keuchel, McCullers, McHugh 2015 retro throwback performance for the clinch.

Let's effing go!

Joe West is a bully hiding behind an MLB badge.

It's amazing how many articles about him have been written (just google it) about him over the years. He REALLY needs to be put out to pasture.

I'll go further and speculate that, as the crew chief, he likely bullies the other umpires who may be afraid to challenge his judgment. MLB has a real problem that they have likely been ignoring for a long time. If this had happened to the Dodgers, Yankees or Red Sox, they would likely have much more interest in the situation.

We also have to remember who was making that play in right field. It's the guy that has been an all-star all season and will probably win the MVP. Just because of his name and who he his, people will naturally give him the benefit of the doubt. It's totally biased and unfair but it happens in every sport with the big name players.

I think there's a miscommunication/misspeaking of "over". He likely means "above" rather than "behind". Semantics, but it's an important distinction in this call.

I think it was the wrong call by the way.

Yeah I probably worded that wrong, it's not like everyone forgot, but that would be all that anyone was talking about today if it weren't for the shenanigans in right field.

Astros are going to get favorable calls tonight and tonight only... even though Verlander doesn't need it.

Biased and skewed calls in favor of Boston will go back to normal game 6.

He is a d-bag, but yes, it was a hell of a catch. It's one of the reasons I don't even think we win tonight. You need at least one thing to go your way, and NOTHING is going our way. I'll try to follow from the plane, but not expecting much.
Joe West is a fat piece of **** and a waste of oxygen.
