Can't we find the fans and interview them? I would love to hear their view. If you noticed, they didn't move their hands, betts jumped and ran into them.

What would the ruling have been if Betts had caught the ball with his glove over into fan territory, but as he was coming down, the fan who was trying catch the ball clasps his hands onto Betts glove. The mitt with ball inside remains out of play while Betts collapses back onto the warning track. What's the ruling?

Does Bregman stay leadoff after 0-5 last night?
I would hope not. He seemed to be pressing for most of his at bats.

No not really anything close to that last night.

More just things falling their way.

I think it would have been overturned if the security guard had not blocked the one camera angle that would show whether Betts was going straight up or out of the field of play. And no way West could see it from shallow right field.

That game SUCKED.... however there are a few positives

1. Our guys fought through adversity, and offensively played well enough to not only win the game, but win comfortably if our pitching would have come through.

2. Guys stepped up in a big way when called upon... Reddick, Correa, Kemp, Springer and Josh James (kept the game from spiraling early).

3. We have Verlander tonight, and he's not going to let this one end in 5. Cole going Saturday in a bounce back game.

Just get it to 7 and I like our chances

It's been proven this season that MLB replay doesn't require "irrefutable" evidence to overturn a call (see Astros/A's call at home plate). MLB claims that replay is there to "get the call right". The replay shows no evidence of a fan leaning into the field of play, and a ball that clearly is going out of the ballpark.

We're not making it easy on ourselves, but Price on short rest vs JV in Houston should be a very very winnable game. Add in the fact their closer is used up and wearing thin in the bullpen overall. Then we go back to Boston and Cole gets a chance at redemption. I think we easily push for game 6 and have a very solid shot at pushing for game 7. Get to 7 and all bets are off.

They need to get rid of replay altogether. It's become a cop out for ****ty umpiring.

Get rid of replay and make the umps perform for their salary. If they don't perform, then fire their ass. Looking at you, you fat piece of **** Joe West.

Yeah, for a team down 3-1 we're in okay shape, but now there's absolutely no margin for error.

The thing that's going to piss me off all offseason if we end up losing this series is how much of it was self inflicted. Walks, wild pitches, pass balls, etc.

Major props to the Houston Chronicle, who not only interviewed the fan, but had the story up by like the end of the third inning. Absolute hustle by the Chronicle.

Quote:

"I didn't reach over the wall; I was on this side of the line," Caldwell said. "I don't understand what happened. I know the rules, and I didn't reach over the line."

Rule 3.16 states that: "No interference shall be allowed when a fielder reaches over a fence" unless "it is clearly intentional." West says that rule isn't applicable, because - in his view - Betts didn't reach into the stands.

"I think you know what I think of Joe West right about now," Caldwell said.

Thinking about winning 3 in a row feels impossible but when broken down like this, you definitely feel better. If that 2015 Rockets team can come back from down 3-1 then this Astros team sure as hell can.

100% this.

It's not the security guard's fault for wanting to watch that play and/or doing his job or even for having a big fro.

It's shameful that in this day and age where cameras are so cheap and do not require operators that MLB wouldn't have every angle in the park covered. Like earlier in the season when the ball kicked into the left field corner and there was no shot re: whether it was fair or foul. Especially in a game of this magnitude.

It doesn't need to be a great shot aesthetically because it doesn't need to be broadcast quality.
Or put 2 feet of plexiglass up & problem solved.

All the prices are going to fall, a lot of us are tired and pissed off. Not to mention the folks that got to bed at 1:30 after going to the game.

On the other hand it's a great chance to get a more reasonable price for tickets to the beginning of a great comeback.

But we've already won 4 in a row this postseason. Boston just won 3 in a row vs us. NY did it to us last year. It's not probable, but it's really much that much of a stretch either.

I'm in that boat. I didn't get to sleep until 2. I'm can't pull that kind of late night back to back. I need to unload my tickets and I'm pretty sure I'm not making my money back.

The Astros hitters have got to get to Price early tonight. He's a headache and a ******, and it the hitters can put up some crooked numbers early, it will go a long way in getting Verlander to the 7th or 8th inning.

The one wildcard is that Boston has been so damn patient at the plate, and not chasing those cutting pitches that end up an inch off the plate.

My concern is that the Sox can play loose and free tonight. No pressure at all on them so they can just look to smash against JV. Hopefully the Astros aren't pressing tonight at the plate....

Not a Astros fan, but if I am a fan in that spot, I'm not just leaving it alone. If a ball if flying at me and has crossed the wall, I'm going to try to catch it for self-preservation at least.

For you Athletic folks, there's a solid story about 'Astroman' this morning.

Apparently in '79 a guy lived on the roof of the Astrodome for 10 days?!

Nope, apparently you're supposed to stand there and get hit in the face, chest or nuts with the ball.

I feel confident that we'll win tonight but in order to win, we can not let our bullpen keep getting beat by Boston's bullpen. We have to score on their bullpen which is something we haven't been doing lately. We beat them 4-3 in the regular season so we definitely can win this thing. Boston overcame a 3-0 deficit in the ALCS in '04 and won the World Series that year, their first since 1918. They then overcame a 3-1 deficit in the ALCS in '07 and won the World Series that year too. And like someone said, the Rockets did it in '15. If those teams can do it, the defending World Series Champions can sure as heck do it. And if Boston can overcome a 3-0 deficit and win four in a row after an 86 year drought, we absolutely can. We just need our bats to stay loud and our bullpen to perform like they have all season. All very doable but it may be tough.

*Astros in 7.

If ruled interference, there is no discretion the fan must be removed. Which makes this call even more egregious. Screwed this guy out of watching a game he paid for, ALCS front row tickets.

I am just amazed at the focus on whether Betts would have caught it or not and the complete lack of focus on what the rule is. Apparently, in the post game, when asked about it, Betts said something to the tune of "I reached over the fence and..." Essentially proving he doesn't know the rule himself because the way he described what happened himself means it should have been a home run.

The instant his glove goes over the fence, fans can do anything they want...hold his glove closed, pull the ball out of the glove, pull the glove off his hand. Obviously no one is going to intentionally do any of those things but the point is, he gets zero protection. And certainly the fans have no obligation to get out of his way.

If the ballpark is empty, yes...I think he catches the ball. But that is totally IRRELEVANT.

To the people out there on social media (many obviously Red Sox fans) that are arguing that he didn't even go over the fence in the first place, my question is this. It is a 7 foot wall. He is a 6 foot tall man and his body is within inches of the wall. If the ball is not over the wall, why is he jumping? Does he have alligator arms? Shouldn't he have just been able to reach out and grab it and stay on his feet? It took all the extension he could get just to get close to it. He's 6 inches away from a wall that is barely taller than he is.

I just don't see how you can possibly rule the way they did. Makes me sick. I thought I would be more relaxed this year since I waited 45 years for them to win it all and they finally did last year, but I just can't get over the fact that such an obvious error most likely just played a huge role in ending our season. If anyone can come back, we can but we are just playing terrible baseball right now.

Man I don't know what I'd do in that situation but I like to think I'd raise hell. You're kicking me out of a game i paid a lot of money to attend in the first inning because some fat ass piece of **** 200' away made a bad call when I did nothing wrong? Hell no.
