Tony Sipp is making $6 millon this year. He is on pace to make 23 appearances this year. That is $261,000 per appearance.

Let's just hope we can scratch out 3 runs tomorrow. Haha.

Got to be the most comfortable guy on the club.

Good to see the texags baseball thread is still the texags baseball thread. Team is winning at a .595 clip after dropping two hard fought series against two of the best teams in baseball and some of you starting getting itchy.

Breathe, relax, and enjoy the season. This team will start hitting more consistently and combined with this other worldly rotation will still be the team to beat in the post season.

For the record though I do think the Yankees, Halos, and BoSox will all be legitimate threats all year and into the post season. It could feasibly be a damn shame for who ever loses the wild card play in game to have to sit at home and watch the AL Central winner steal their playoff spot.

Maybe it's just because it's late, but sure seem like there's a lot fewer posters during a game like this - and I recognize all of them.

For those of us that live on East Coast, game started after 10 and have to be up for work at 530. With all the offensive fireworks I imagine game didn't end until closer to 2am. I made that sacrifice last year for postseason but not for an early May game against A's.

Damn I called it a night after George's 5th hit thinking he wouldn't get another AB. Good to see him locked in.

If we learned anything during the WS it's that this offense goes as George goes so if he's raking maybe that rolls downhill and gets these guys going.

If we lose 1-0 or 2-1 tonight I'll break something

Seeing as Manaea only gives up 1.63 per 9 innings I'd say you need to put your valuables under lock and key.

He's a good pitcher that just doesn't give up many runs to anyone.

I saw this on twitter and want to check y'alls thoughts.

I've never been big on some of the advanced stats and this one caught my eye. IMO what a worthless stat if this shows guys like Rondon, Harris and Sipp on a leaderboard for us.

#Astros FIP leaders list:

Gerrit Cole (1.55)
Hector Rondon (1.71)
Justin Verlander (2.31)
Collin McHugh (2.42)
Will Harris (2.57)
Chris Devenski (2.60)
Tony Sipp (2.69)
Ken Giles (2.88)
Lance McCullers (3.05)

Great to see the breakout last night.

If Gattis wants to stay in the majors, he needs to lock himself inside the batting cage. No food, just enough water, and practice practice practice. Don't bears get more aggressive when they're hungry? El Oso Blanco needs to make an appearance.

I'll let irish get into more but I think FIP is actually a pretty well respected metric.

It measures a pitcher's performance on only what he has total control over (HRs, Ks, walks, and HBPs). It doesn't take into account balls in play. I think some will even say to look at FIP and not ERA as it's more true.

Yep.

They're going to have to do something with Gattis. Get him some innings behind the plate and hope that helps or a DL stint or something.

Not looking good for El Oso that's for sure.

I get the point of the stat, but if a guy gives up a lot of base hits but then does good with walks, strike outs and no homeruns it can be misleading to judge a guy off that stat.

It's almost like you gotta look at FIP and ERA to know the true value.

FIP estimates ERA by assuming average BABIP. Basically, it makes a guess at how many runs a pitcher would allow per nine innings with average luck and defense. ERA describes what happened when he pitched; FIP is a much better indicator of the pitcher's quality in the future.

Edit: It's really good when your pitchers have higher ERAs than FIPs because it suggests improvement in the future. When ERA is much lower than FIP, your guy is probably getting pretty lucky, except that a ground ball pitcher will usually be a little better than his FIP indicates.
Ag_07

Yeah that's a fair point and I don't disagree with it.

I also think ERA is a pretty flawed stat especially for relievers. If a guy loads the bases, is yanked, and the next guy gives up a grand slam the guy who actually gave up the HR doesn't get the inflated ERA.

Not sure if that has anything to with FIP vs ERA, but I hate that about ERA. I think it's a big misrepresentation for relief pitchers.

***But while we're on the subject I looked and overall the Astro BP is actually pretty good.

AL Rankings
3rd in ERA (3.47)
2nd in FIP (3.02)
3rd in WAR (1.3)
3rd in Ks/9 (10.03)
1st in HR/9 (0.77)

Maybe we need to get Carlos Beltran on retainer tonight to coach the guys through their at bats against an above average pitcher.

That's baseball, man. Especially in the first couple of months when hitters are trying to find their groove. Same thing happened last year and look how that turned out.
