I think at this point expectations of last years offense is starting to wane.

However, with this years improvement in pitching I don't think it's gonna have the ill affects on team success that some on here are expecting. I think the offense will end up somewhere better than they are now but not as good as they were last year.

In the end I think that'll still be enough to win the division and make a run in the playoffs.

Just keep in mind that we still have the 2nd most wins (4th best Win%) in MLB and have 130ish games left to play. Again, a bit disappointed but not worried.

I really think we have benefited from a super weak schedule in April and that is why our record is so good right now. May is the complete opposite schedule wise. Notice we have struggled to win games vs teams with a pulse in New York and the Angels. I predict we will be a .500 team by the end of May if we don't make some roster changes by then.

I think you are overstating it. Sure we've played some easy teams but regardless the Astros are still one of the better teams in the league.

I would replace Jake and Fisher with a couple guys from AAA to see if they can get something going.

It's incredible how quick it has happened.

If we can go from celebrating a World Series title to this so quickly, I'm confident that by the All Star Break Gattis will be hitting for extra bases and Marisnick will walk. Maybe two or three times!

I don't necessarily disagree but I just don't buy into the strength of schedule argument.

If that's the case then June is super easy with OAK, SEA, TEX, and 2 series each with KC and TB. Only decent series are BOS and TOR.

So theoretically what ground we lose in May we make up in June and we're back to being a .600+ team.

But this all seems pointless and why I think the whole SOS excuse is bogus. You play who you play and your record is what it is.

Not yet... but if all the dumb stuff hinch has done, not walking Gary Sanchez the other night in the 9th with first base open, and the ensuing explanation afterward were pretty damn horrible.

Keuchel is flat out bad right now. And so are our bats. Better figure it out in a hurry or we gonna be having to dig ourselves out of a hole to get back to the playoffs before we know it. We are sucking against the better teams on the schedule.

He gave up three in 7. That's not a terrible outing. The two homers weren't bombs. Decent pitches that just got punched out barely.
I agree. I was just (and still am) frustrated with some of the losses we've had this year so far. Hoping we can right the ship and get on a long winning streak again.

I'm surprised more people aren't talking about the departure of Alex Cora. Last year, the players raved about how much they loved him and how much he helped their hitting. Well now we are struggling with our offense and the Red Sox are 2nd in average and first in OPS.

This thread. We won the WS with this team. We can win it again with this team. Right around 20% of the season is done and we have a top 5 record. Our pitching with some minor exceptions is one of the best rotations to ever set foot a diamond. Jesus. If we get rid of Gattis and Jake who are we calling up? Kemp? AJ Reed? Tyler White? Two weeks of them and some of you will be calling for their heads. I'm not thsorry expert but Kyle Tucker doesn't seem to be quite ready for the show yet. God help us if he comes up and his first major league AB is a strikeout. People will be calling for his head too and declaring him a bust. Back off the ****ing ledge and enjoy the season. (I understand it's kind of hard right now). Personally I think the loss of Beltran is being felt for his leadership and his mentorship. We need that old hand in the dug our to get the guys focused. But we have McCann, Altuve, George. They've been around long enough. Our guys should know what they need to do to prepare for each series and someone needs to taking charge and get the guys focused. IDGAF who it is, but personally I'd rather them be in the cages than doing HEB commercials but that's me. This season is the season to make a statement that last year wasn't a fluke. I feel good we'll come out of it and make it another great year. It's too early to be screaming for players to be sent down and replaced and crying the season is a bust. Of course I'm frustrated and maybe confused as to why we aren't producing offensively but not ready to freak out. Still too early. If this keeps up for another month then I'll be concerned. Until then take a collective deep breath and relax.

So to be clear, you're complaining about people complaining, then complaining about the players being in HEB commercials that were likely shot months ago?

I thought overall it was a calm rational post. Also wouldn't really call it complaining, more like a reality check? I don't know. Main point was if we send down players who are we going to call up and would they really be a big improvement? We tried the AJ Reed, Tyler White, Kemp thing before.

Last night was the first game I was able to actually watch vs checking the gamecast at work in several weeks. And with being off today the alcohol was able to numb the frustration pretty good. We'll see how today goes. I may start mowing my yard sometime around the 5th inning

OBP of players who generally hit in the bottom third of the order (thru April):

2017:
Gattis .400
Marisnick .400 (only 21 ABs tho)
McCann .375
Aoki .338
Bregman .340 (hit bottom third for a while at the beginning of 2017)
M Gonzalez .317

2018:
McCann: .391
Stassi .366
M Gonzalez .316
Gattis .276
Fisher .235
Marisnick .145

Nothing earth shattering here. Just putting some numbers to an idea that most already have... that the bottom of the order is not setting the table for Springer/Altuve/Correa. Granted, last year our bottom third was epic-ly good. Maybe this a bit more normal.

Heard a spot about Alex Cora yesterday on 790 and to be honest it's one of those things that never really dawned on me. He really was a great behind the scenes guy for the club.

I think we miss him and Beltran. From what I've read, both guys were pretty underrated in terms of helping our bats with in-game adjustments.

Very difficult to win all162 games and go undefeated, in fact, I don't think it's ever been done before

Our offensive numbers are solid, we just aren't spreading them out. We have scored the 5th most runs in MLB. We need to find consistency.

I think Cora / Beltran were a huge part of the offensive success last year. It helped our guys with their approach at the plate. Those guys seemed to help them break through against a starter that was firing on all cylinders. I think the radio guys last night said noone pitched a complete game against 2017 Astros.

I believe that if we lost Strom our pitching would also take a few steps back.

Last year, we had a great group of behind the scenes guys that brought out the best in our guys. They might still find that mojo at the plate.. I hope so.

The good news that our Run Differential is 2nd best in MLB at +59

Think this is the number to focus on rather just simply runs scored or straight offensive stats.

i have ZERO fear of us missing the playoffs. We will still win the division

However, if we don't get the offense figured out, I'm not sure how deep we can go in the playoffs. We can't win every game 1-0 or 2-1.

Run differential shows hitting, pitching, and defense. Our pitching has been elite. I don't have the stats but I think our defense has been strong too.

Look at k% this year vs last. That tells the story.

Jake 52.2%
Fisher 46.6%
Davis 32.1%
Stassi 31.9%
Gattis 29.3%
Marwin 25.2%
Correa 24.4%

All above league average.

Don't forget...The 05 team had an abysmal offense with players like Jason Lane, Adam Everett, and Willy Traveras.

As a team (position players only) they slashed .262/.329/.749 on the year

The rode their stud pitching staff all the way to the WS.

Head to head may be important when it comes to tiebreakers. Might as well try to win this one. Especially with the 22 inning scoreless streak we have going.

and the lack of offense/clutch hitting showed in the World Series as we got swept. Including a 1-0 game 4 loss.

True

Just pointing out that it is possible to make a deep run with a not so stellar offense and stud rotation.

it's possible... but not as likely in 2018 given the higher offensive numbers in the postseason the last few years.

Other than some improvement in the bullpen, I'm not really that worried overall. I just am not having fun watching them play like I did last year. I think that is my big complaint so far. They spoiled us with how fun they were to watch last year. You never felt they were out of a game.

Does anyone know if there is a site that will tell you the stats per each slot in the batting order? I ask because on a radio show I heard a stat a few weeks ago that the 9th slot on 6 NL teams had a higher batting average than the 9th slot on the Astros. Meaning the pitchers are out-hitting Marisnick and Fisher combined for 6 teams. Interesting stat, where the heck can I find that?

AustinCountyAg
How long do you want to ignore this user?
a lot of all this worrying and complaining is because everyone expectations are so high. The team's slumps and struggles are all relative.....this time last year we would be thrilled about how the team was performing if they were putting up these same stats.

everyone needs to....

Baseball Reference has that info on the team batting splits pages.

https://www.baseball-reference.com/teams/split.cgi?t=b&team=HOU&year=2018#all_lineu

You can also find splits for all of MLB or each league as well. But I think the only way to compare multiple teams is to look up the info for each team.

https://www.baseball-reference.com/leagues/split.cgi?t=b&lg=MLB&year=2018#all_lineu

9th spot wont be ONLY pitchers for NL teams, but also PH/subs and position players in AL parks.

The 7th spot in our batting order is considerably worse than our 9th spot, BTW.
