Every event in baseball has a "run expectancy" associated with it. They add all of it up and come up with that number. It normalizes sequencing (getting lots of hits or walks back to back or allowing them back to back). Time and time again "sequencing" has been proven to be random and not a "repeatable skill."

Another way to think of this is, 9 hits in 1 game. If those 9 hits happen each inning, that team likely scored 0 runs. If those 9 hits happen in 1 inning, then they've probably scored 7 runs minimum.

Baseruns normalizes that.
