Gallo is a helluva an all-around athlete. He's just fine at 1st, and when they trade Beltre, he'll be good back at 3rd.

Yeah, I agree. Gallo can handle 1B or 3B, plus he seemed pretty servicable in LF as well. He is pretty athletic for a big guy.

So, again... go with the 6 man rotation to slow the number of IP. OR is it 6 man rotations now a trial?
I'm going to go with "both".

One guy with no position is not ideal but not a major issue. Having 2-3+ guys (Mazara, Calhoun, Choo, etc) with basically no position is definitely an issue.
Agreed. But they couldn't/can't move Choo, and if they got legitimate offers that included Mazara, it was foolish to not at least listen (maybe they did, idk). And then, they trade Darvish for yet another guy with no position (Calhoun)?!? I've been a Jon Daniels fan, but man, it's hard to see what he is trying to put together for the short and long term. It doesn't help that Odor has been complete ass since his new shiny contract (which I don't necessarily put on Daniels).

Now maybe after this season, Daniels goes and pays for two or three big time free agents, but that assumes he doesn't ship off Beltre, Hamels, and Andrus...

Gallo needs cut back on all the errors. A 92-93 fielding % over at 3B doesn't cut it.

I think he'd settle in once he has some extended time there vs. moving between 3 positions. He was showing some nice defensive progress in the minors back when he was 21-22 (% at 3rd was up around 96-97%). I think the tools are there, just mostly in need of much more repetition.

Daniels has often said he is about getting the best player available. So, in the draft, he does that. In trades he has done that. So, Calhoun was a case of "best player available."

MLB has done a number of things to diminish JD's strategy and I think he has failed to adapt. He took the club in 2005.

When Daniels 1st took over, he brought in a ton of retreads like Eric Gagne. The rules were you'd get draft compensation for FAs like Gagne. So, he was able to trade many players that did well, for lots of prospects. He also took advantage of the Latin/Int'l market which was largely wide open.

MLB changed the compensation rules. They required a player to be on the roster Opening Day, in order for the team to get compensation. So, a guy like Gagne would have brought less, because it was a complete loss to the acquiring team.

New "Pool" money has leveled the field on the Int'l market. MLB has even gone in and stripped players where it was deemed questionable about birth certificate, etc.

Historically the Rangers have always drafted hitters early and pitchers later, knowing hitters have a higher hit-rate. That is why the Rangers always had 10 3B'ers/1B. Daniels would go heavy in the SP for the draft and sign several Latin middle IFs. I think he traded (Andrus/Salty/Fielder) for or signed the big bats (Beltre/Nap/Choo). The amount of talent he was able to bring in, was insane. So, even misses were fine because there was just so much talent. Players were fighting for time and promotion, which only elevated the minor system more. He was also able to take risks on high ceiling guys like Dillon Tate and Matuella, because the amount of talent was high.

JD was also able to trade from guys with extra years of contract. Hamels for instance. That is why Verlander seemed like a logical next addition.

Several misses (Fielder/Choo/Garza/Dempster) have depleted our players that should be impacts (Odubel Herrera-RuleV, Brinson, Kyle Hendricks, Nick Williams).

All that is changed, as demonstrated with Ohtani and last round of Int'l signings. JD has to either grow his talent organically... or sign it.

Many on here believe he is going to go big in FA in order to put shine on the new stadium to lure STH. Aside from Beltre, the team really isn't built with big FA signings and JD has had limited success there.

I'm not judging any decision of JDs... I just wonder what tools he has to rebuild this team. At the moment, it appears to be sinking the season and trying to trade off assets like - Hamels, Beltre, et al. My concern is that too many teams didn't come to the table last year. We got very little for Darvish and Houston didn't pay much for Verlander.

I'm a big proponent of "get the best player available" and if that means you have an untraditional looking 2nd basemen you slot in as a power hiring cleanup hitter or whatever it is...then so be it...

But that is all conditioned on whoever you put on the roster fits within the roster needs and makes it better. At some point, adding more designated hitters (especially mediocre designated hitters) just doesn't help the roster.

I'm not trying to pick on any particular player or move that Jon Daniels has made, but surely the "best player available" philosophy has to start taking into account how the player fits within the roster, otherwise the Rangers are going to keep having the same problems.

A prospect panning out into a major league regular is pretty long odds.

Going a rung or two down the prospect rankings ladder to get a guy that fills a need is a recipe for having an even worse farm system.

Texas' problem isn't that they are drafting/trading-for too many stud guys at a certain position. Texas' problem is that they aren't evaluating well enough and drafting/trading-for enough stud guys.

If Willie Calhoun is a capable big-league hitter, Texas will find a spot for him. Him sitting in the minors right now for another month only buys him another year of service time.

Gallo has looked shaky to me at first. Just off the top of my head a few games into this I've seen him not make a dig at first to complete at DP, make that awkward throw to Beltre the other night that Beltre thankfully was able to play on a short-hop, and look functionally ret@rded chasing after a foul ball that landed in play near the stands. I know I sound overly critical but geez, it's only April 4th.

I don't have data in front of me but I have a suspicion that the change in compensatory picks hasn't made a big difference on the trading market; like I feel like the impact trades Daniels made back before the World Series would have happened anyways.

Or if they wouldn't, it's more to do with the old Yankee model running its course. Folks want to be younger, athletic, and everyone is getting more worried about big veteran salaries.

I think Gallo has been pretty damn solid so far at 1st. He's made several defensive plays. I can only think of one play in which Andrus or Odor handcuff him on a short hop throw to first.

The quick hands he flashed when they charged expecting bunt and got greeted with a swing away was pretty slick earlier this week.

I'm in no way against it, but it is odd to me that Banny chose to sit him this game after he had 2 hits and 2 RBI's last night

Banny being Banny.

Actually... Manaea is a Lefty and Profar is a switch hitter. Odor a Lefty.
