Altuve was the perfect type of player to hit 3000, that he's not going to get there shows just how unlikely it will be to see many guys do it in the future.

One kind of odd development has been the signing of guys to long super deals when they are like 23 or 24 years old. Someone like Witt should be someone with a good chance, but if he's still not good when his deal ends after his age 37 season, there is no guarantee he finds a place to get the final 300-400 hits he'd need. (Of course Witt probably opts out of his deal making this irrelevant for him specifically but hopefully the point is clear)

Maybe Julio Rodriguez is a better example, his deal ends after his age 33 season. Very unlikely he gets a super deal at that age so his longevity past that is entirely tied to his production late into his 30s.

This is way different than Juan Soto who is signed through his age 40 season because he didn't sign his mega deal until after hitting free agency. This basically guarantees Soto a chance to get to 3000 because he's going to still be rostered and getting ABs because of his contract.

Perhaps nothing, but maybe the new trend of early extensions ends up having an unintended side effect by impacting career longevity for aging stars.

Do we not think Altuve gets it? Let's say he finishes his contract in 2029 150 hits short. We don't think they sign him to a two year contract to try to get him to 3000? The chase for 3000 would be huge for the fans for a lifelong Astro.

Everything I've heard from the inside says he will retire at the end of his contract and that 3K hits doesn't mean a lot to him - the championships do. I can't imagine he's the type who would want to hang around as a detriment to the team at age 40-41 hitting .200 trying to finagle those last 100+ hits to reach a milestone.

He's got no chance. I think between Covid and injuries he has lost the equivalent of 2 prime years. His prime was 200 hits/year.

I think he probably lost conservatively 350-375 hits. That would have him at 2850-2875 now and he would have made it.

Losing next season to a work stoppage is just icing on the cake for him.

It sucks but it just shows 3000 hits takes longevity, health and some luck.

This. Unfortunately any type of work stoppage would IMO seal his fate of not getting it.

Pujols was hitting around .250 into his 40s. I'd rather that than whatever has been going on with 1B for the last 4 years.

Knowing that all 3000 hits came in one jersey would be pretty awesome. There can't be more than 2-3 guys who can make that claim.

Actually it's quite a few

Musial
Jeter
Yaz
Ripken
Brett
Yount
Gwynnn
Biggio
Kaline
Clemente

There are also guys who got more than 3K with one team while playing for multiple teams
That list includes
Rose
Cobb
Aaron
Mays
Cap Anson - if you include guys who played before 1900. He played 27 seasons, so not exactly tough to get 3,000 hits.

COVID shortened year and two work stoppages (one already and one anticipated) during his career absolutely fkd him from reaching 3k.

I should have said in the modern era. That's still way more than I would have thought.
