I really dont think we are looking starter unless its an amazing deal for someone not generally belived to be traded ( Maybe like DeGrom or someone really surprising like Bumgarner, etc someone you could say is definitely ace material.). Gray is borderline, Yanks probably more desperate for SP than us

Yep, inter-division trades of this nature usually have a higher premium attached.

Oakland may have wanted a premium to send a controllable starter to someone in their own division. Also, Billy Beane has a history of ranking prospects differently than the "experts" say he should. He was on record that he wanted a centerfielder, and if we had an offer out there it's entirely possible he just valued Fowler higher than Fisher in that regard.

I wonder if Strom was consulted on Liriano to see if he thought he could help get more out of him? Face value the deal doesn't blow me away, but better to have him than Sipp out there given his post season experience and maybe he can make a tweak to improve his number.
I bet Luhnow would have done that deal, too, but doubt Beane would have accepted it. It is just impossible to know what prospects the A's really value from different ballclubs. We have the "public" rankings but every organization is going to have their own internal views so always hard to compare and know what a team would be willing accept.
Wow. How could we not top that. Cubs got Wilson cheaply too. I would have done both deals with similar level prospects and we would be ducking rock stars right now.

Everything depends on where we have our prospects ranked compared to where other teams have then ranked, both of which are probably significantly different lists than what we see from the various services that rank prospects.
