This night is still on Hinch and Hoyt. Can't believe this team is so snakebit at home, even against crap like the Oakland A's...

I thought we had this one. Reddick and McCann have had some great ABs in crunch time this year. 0-7 w/RISP before the 9th is tough to overcome. Bounce back and take the next 2 at home and all is forgiven.

One of the worst called strikes I've ever seen. That Reddick at bat was terrible

That's a bigger deal than Hoyt. Score early and you're never in that situation.

This team sucks at hitting at MMP... Anyone who denies it or tries to spin it another way is just oblivious.

The team was hitting just fine tonight. They just ran afoul of some bad #sequencing in both directions tonight.

I'm saying swinging at the first pitch fastball is not a bad decision

Hoyt made his pitch. The hitter was just better. Oh well.

Hoyt still has a 2.68 FIP and 15.2 K/9 which point to him being a very good reliever, even if ERA doesn't show it right now. I think he'll be one of our most reliable guys by seasons end.

With new knowledge of how the game played out (Thank you BowSowy).

Get outta here. Fiers pitched a good game and would've had a nice stat line if Hoyt didn't come in and **** it up. He's also a big reason why we're playing >0.500 ball since losing Keuchel and LMJ.

Trip down memory lane coming...

10 years ago today, Craig Biggio got his 3000th hit, in a game against the Colorado Rockies (actually had a 5 hit night). I was lucky enough to be there that night, section 131.

That game was the first of a 4-game series and the last three games were sold out, I believe. Going into that Thursday game, he needed 3 hits to get to 3000. It was the only game of that series I could attend, so I really did catch a break.

Carlos Lee won that game in the 11th with a walk-off grand slam, so that night was easily the highlight of a pretty bad season.

---------------------

Fiers deserved a better fate, and pitched better than his line would indicate. Hopefully situational hitting will be better tonight.

Fiers was solid again last night.

Again, that's a good example in which ERA doesn't tell the whole story.

As far as Hoyt goes I'm thinking he needs to become a guy who strictly starts innings. Seems like once the bases are clear he gets guys out.

What do you mean ERA doesn't show he's a good reliever? Almost all of the runs he allows are inherited, which means they don't show up on his ERA....

Same here. Sat in RF and it was the only game we could attend. Can't believe it's been two years. Still have the poster we got that day and ticket stub in the garage.

I liked how they had a spot for the ticket on the poster itself. I tried to get a poster for a co-worker as I was leaving, but they were pretty strict about one per person.

I had tickets to the game the next night regrettably

But, can anyone name who hit the walk off HR in that game?

We had two straight nights of walk off HRs

In his last nine appearances, Hoyt has given up 12 runs. In addition to that, he's allowed 7 of 10 inherited runners to score. So that's 19 runs scored in his last 10.1 innings. That's trash. He needs to be sent back down. I just don't know who to replace him with.

If we're going to make a move, I'm hoping it's another bullpen arm. We've got a solid pen for the most part, but there is room for improvement with some of the weak links like Hoyt.

10.69 ERA
16.93 runs allowed per 9 innings

My dad, brother, and I bought tickets to every game that homestand just so we could make sure we were there. We only went to that first game because we hadn't been to a game in a while. With Craig 3 away we really didn't think there was much of a chance of it happening that night. One of my favorite sporting events I've ever attended.

I'm going to guess Mike Lamb on the walk off the following night?

Hoyt isn't going anywhere just because there isn't anyone to replace him with.

Then when Peacock gets back in the pen Guduan will be sent back down. Last night was a perfect Brad Peacock situation, but then again so was Sunday so I'm not even sure he would've been available.

GD starters who consistently can't go 5/6 innings are killer. Which is concerning because even when McHugh and Morton come back I'm assuming they'll be on pretty strict pitch counts. Have to think another starter in addition to Peacock will move out to the pen to also do long relief.

So just to project we'd have...

McCullers
Fiers
Morton
McHugh
Martes
AKA The Killer MFers

Peacock
Paulino
Hoyt
Sipp
Gregerson
Devo
Harris
Giles

Maybe we should go with tandem starters for the last 3 starts..

Keuchel
McCullers
Morton/McHugh
Fiers/Peacock
Martes/Paulino

With Sipp, Gregerson, Giles, Devo, Harris in the pen.

I would be totally fine with some version of that in the playoffs. Let Morton only go through the lineup twice

In the playoffs, you can let guys like Devo, Peacock, and I'm sure Fiers that would be able to bridge the gap over a multiple inning outing.

I don't hate this. I was thinking a 6 man rotation would be the way to go but our starters don't give us nearly enough innings, and keuchel and mchugh will definitely be on pitch counts.

We really need to get another top end starter and bullpen arm. Rumors floating around that Boston wants Gray, and Atlanta wants gray or archer. Cleveland will likely be players too. If Cleveland or Boston get better and we sit on our hands, our road just got a LOT tougher, and I don't like it.

Look at us discussing a tandem pitching rotation, yet there are some people who think we don't need another starter.

Good to hear! I couldn't watch the game and when i got up with the newborn this morning, just looked at the box score real quick and saw Fiers line, I thought maybe Fiers of old showed up. My sincere apologies to fiers.
