3. The home plate umpire can be unbelievable bad at calling balls/strikes, even with a virtual strikezone on the screen at all times, and no national broadcast crew will even think about saying how horrible the umpire is at his job.

You know Blum and Kalas would have no qualms in commenting on the sheetyness of that umpire.

He was so bad. And for both sides. Horribly inconsistent and it seemed like it actually got worse as the game progressed.

What a joke.

Yes, the home plate ump last night was really bad. But, that's not why the game was lost.

It was lost in the first half of the game when so many runners were left on base. No clutch hitting early. We had every chance to put that game away early & rock Price out of the park and didn't get it done.

From Buster Olney Insider piece.

Quote:

the sense among rival evaluators is that the Astros want to push to jump the market and make a deal. "The need for a starting pitcher is right now," an AL official said.

The radio guys this morning mentioned that Olney reported that teams are asking the Astros about Bregman when discussing dealing a pitcher.

I can't see the entire article but anyone with an insider sub care to read and report back?

Saw this on the MLB rumors page on ESPN discussing Quintana. Looks like we won't be giving up the farm for him.
Quote:

The Houston Astros, Pittsburgh Pirates and New York Yankees have all been mentioned as possible suitors for Quintana. The Astros, who are dealing with numerous injuries to their starting staff, would appear to be a logical fit, but Heyman says the White Sox have been "frustrated" by Houston's offers.

They mentioned that although teams are asking it seems we're still set on not moving Alex.

Hoping someone can shed some light on it and read that article and report back.

Maybe that's part of the 'frustrated' feelings of the ChiSox

If any team is asking for a guy who's been contributing to the Astros 25-man roster for over a year now, they can damn well feel "frustrated" when Luhnow tells them to go spit.

Their perceived market value for Quintana is horribly off if they think Luhnow would even consider Bregman in a deal.

I agree. But also guys who haven't like say Bregs who played his first game July 25th.

I wouldn't lie to you. July 25th vs NYY. He went 0-4 and then we on to go hitless until he went 1-5 on July 31st. After that, he went on MF tear.

It's interesting though.

Would you part with Bregman if it meant keeping the main contingent of Martes, Fisher, Tucker, Perez, etc in tact?

Let Marwin man 3B and keep the tank stocked?

I'm not sure other teams (especially the ChiSox) would bite on it but maybe using Bregman could keep us from giving up some of those prospects.

Yep. It's worth considering. We all like Bregman but I don't think we'd notice a drop-off. We have Marwin.
Ag_07

Yeah worth considering.

But again I doubt that if Lunhow said 'We'll give you Bregman but that means you're not getting Martes, Fisher, or Tucker' that opposing teams would be ok with that.

Still think Martes is going to have to be included in any deal we make.

Just looking at the White Sox system, they have a ton of right handed arms. They may not be all that interested in Martes. Our position players may be what they covet.

I just dont see how we trade a regular off of our current big league club. Marwin is so valuable as a utlity guy. If he has to be our every day 3rd baseman we lose lineup flexibility as previously mentioned. We are robbing Peter to pay Paul at that point and I dont think Quintana is worth that.

I won't lie and say I think Bregman is untouchable. IMHO, at this stage, Altuve, Corre, Keuchel and maybe McCullers are our only non-tradable guys. Now it would have to be a damn good deal to part with Springer or Bregman, but if one of those names could net you an Ace like SP then I think you'd have to at least consider.

That's what makes all of this ridiculous. I could kind of understand if it was for somebody like sale with a sub 3 era, but for a guy who's been crap all season? White Sox can shove it.

It's crazy the prospects we are talking about giving up for a bunch of guys who all have 4.5+ ERAs.

Cole and Gray haven't been good either

Maybe the White Sox should have traded him in the off season if they wanted a better return. Then he wouldn't have **** the bed for them so hard this season.

CAreer-worst ERA+, FIP, xFIP, WHIP, HR9, BB9, WAR, and IP/G with no significant bad luck, a suddenly bad fastball, and he's not getting batters to swing at things out of the zone nearly as often. Batters are finally being patient with him and he isn't making them pay.

Just to bring some of us back away from the ledge a bit.

Fangraphs currently has us projected to win 98 games and has at a 99.8% chance at a playoff birth

Good, I wouldn't give them squat for that overrated pitcher. I do not understand the obsession over this guy.

There are only a handful of available high-end arms. Before this year he was the best one available.

2017: $6M
2018: $8.8M
  • 2019 Team Option: $10.5M ($1M buyout)
  • 2020 Team Option: $10.5M ($1M buyout)

  • For an AS caliber pitcher who has pitched 200+ innings the last 4 years

  • Again...If he checks out health-wise and his stuff is deemed to be there (no decrease in velocity, spin rates, etc) then I'm ok with him.

I'm still going to bang the drums that this team doesn't NEED to trade for another SP. The Astros are ****ing 11 games ahead of the second place team in the AL West and 6.5 games ahead of both NY and Boston, who we should have beat in this last series.

This is DESPITE Keuchel and McCullers missing multiple starts, Morton out for about a month, and McHugh not having pitched a game this season. We still lead the AL in SP ERA despite all of that.

I'd rather see what we have in Martes and Paulino for the next month than trade for arguably middling pitchers in Gray and Santana, particularly when our first 3 SPs are on programs and likely to be back soon.

I think our bullpen is in serious need of a lockdown arm though because they've been shaky of late it seems.

Agreed that when you're looking at trading players away for a ~5.0 ERA guy...I wonder if we're better off filling in the gaps with guys like Martes this year. Is there really much difference?

Just an update on the rotation injuries

LMJ - Throwing a BP today or tomorrow and could start in the upcoming SEA series
Dallas - Playing catch today for the first time since going down
Morton - Throwing a BP today
McHugh - Sent to FL for extended ST

I would expect to see Lance in SEA and Morton already throwing a BP sounds very promising.

I am not worried about the season. We can play .500 ball and still be alright.

I am focused on the postseason. Dallas & Lance are studs. maybe not Kershaw or Sale, but I am not worried about them matching up with anyone. So check those boxes we are good. Once we get to game 3 and 4 then I worry. We insert a guy like Gray here and move Morton to game 4 (unless we're bringing back aces) and that is where I think we have a big advantage.

Going back to not being worried about the regular season. I don't want my bullpen dead ass tired in Sept/Oct. We need another starter to eat up some innings.

The A's SB Nation site basically has speculated outfielders for Sonny Gray.

They said the A's should "hold out" for something like a package of Ramon Laureano, Teoscar Hernandez, and Ronnie Dawson
