I just caught up on all the posts since the game started last night and wanted to address a few comments, but I'm not going to go find them now.

After Sunday's win, Hinch said that he prefers not to use Devo for so long precisely because he's unavailable for a few days. Last night we got two solid innings including the scariest part of the lineup in a close game. That's exactly how I want to see him used.

Which brings me to my next point: every team wants Andrew Miller. We don't need Andrew Miller; we have Chris Devenski. That's why he should not be in the rotation.
I've always found that odd; the dude is on the verge of being a starting pitcher; but he can't go 2-3 innings on a day or two of rest?

I think it's about total number of pitches along with total number of high stress pitches, not necessarily total innings. A 26 pitch outing is like a regular 1-inning outing to Devenski I'm sure. He threw 60 pitches in both 4 inning outings. That's 1/2 to 2/3 of a start for a guy who's not starting.

11 innings in 13 games

He's on pace for like 130 innings, all of which are high leverage

That's definitely better than as starter, especially if he keeps his ERA below 2

I don't think it's so much about number of pitches, but starting and stopping so many times.

You hear a lot of managers talk about a certain number of 'up/downs' rather than a number of pitches.

5 innings in one start is a lot less warming up and stress than 2 innings one night, 2 innings the next, and 1 inning the next. Kind of apples and oranges when you look at it.

Here's my Devo chart:

If IP < 2 = Devo available next game
If IP 2 < 3 = Devo available after one day rest
If IP 3 < 5 = Devo available after 3 days rest

If close game in September and you need to shut down the other team = Devo no matter what.

So by your logic he can pitch 1 inning every night?

Also worth considering... Go back in this thread and look at his velocity chart in the 4 inning game. He lost a lot by 60 pitches. He's start getting hit hard if he was in there until 100 every game. Dynamite stuff in the first inning or two times through the lineup doesn't mean anything for the innings after that.

He may be a starter one day, but his current role is perfect for this team.

he would be even more effective if we had more lefty and/or flamethrower starters.

This.

I feel like he's most valuable where he is now than anywhere else.

Think of it this way...Would you want Fiers getting his innings and seeing Devo once every 5 days?

Also relevant to Sam Dyson. The Rangers fans are griping on their thread as if blowing a lead in the ninth is so much worse than blowing one in the eighth.

And it shouldn't be Fiers forever. Way too many options for that 5th spot in the near future.

  • McHugh gets healthy
  • Frances Martes gets ready
  • David Paulino gets healthy/ready
  • Brady Rodgers is off to a hot start in AAA
  • Trade for a respectable #4/#5 pitcher

But all of those other scenarios leave Devo in the pen where he's been such a huge weapon.

No doubt. And I can't wait

I think the day Fiers gets axed from the roster should be a day of celebration and debauchery. I'm not a Mike Fiers fan at all.

I'd leave him in the pen but here is where it all circles back to hinch. If devos stuff is that good (and it is), then he shouldn't be reduced to middle relief.

IMO devo should swap roles with gregerson at a minimum.

But hinch is going to continue to ride that gregerson the 8th and Giles the 9th because that's the robotic way of doing things and gregerson is his "setup" guy and Giles is his "closer" and will take months of blown holds/saves to ever deviate from that.

With the way he is throwing and how electric he is for 1-2 innings there is no reason devo shouldn't currently be your setup guy and on deck for your closer role if and when Giles ever goes off the rails.

Don't care about "experience" or how much money we dumped on Giles. I want the best pitchers with the best stuff pitching crunch time in the late innings.

Yesterday Devi came in the game up 2-0

We increase the lead while he is pitching, making it harder for the Killer Gs to blow it

Go read the Nate Silver post. TL;DR version: the Astros are getting a lot more value out of Devo in middle relief than they would in a designated set-up or closer role.

Because it wouldn't cost much in prospects. I really want to hang onto Kyle Tucker and some of the others.

I could see that happening.

If our 1-3 is stout and they want to improve the rotation without giving up the big prospects it'll take to get a 1/2 guy then an improvement in the 4/5 for giving up very little could be an option.

With as many starters as we have that can barely make it through 5 or 6 innings, you better keep Devenski in the bullpen!

Yep. Throw a Low A Lottery ticket to the Braves to get Bartolo Colon. Slot him in at #4 and let Musgrove get skipped a couple of times to limit his innings a little.

I guess maybe taking a vet that has a couple years left on his contract. Would have to be cheap though. Depending on where we are this season, id like to see them enquirer about Archer if he keeps pitching well and also Yu Darvish if the Rangers suck. It's the last year on his contract.

My point was, if the rotation ends up being Keuchel, McCullers, Morton, McHugh, and Musgrove. With Fiers still around, I don't see the need of a 4/5 guy when fiers is fine for a 5th pitcher.
