What's absolutely wild is looking at our strikeout rate. We went from 8.58 in 2015 to 8.96 in 2016 and then now we're at an MLB best 6.85 this year. As we were discussing Beltran earlier, I'd think him and McCann are a huge part of that turnaround. Not to say the coaches haven't done some work, but the amount of improvement over one year is pretty crazy. Putting the ball in play has allowed for some special innings.

This is how Fiers has always been though. He goes trough times where he is a great pitcher, but goes through times when he looks like he shouldn't be in the majors. His problem as always been a 2-3 really bad pitches a game that end up in the seats.

Of all things I thought would happen this year, I don't think I'd believe anyone that told me Fiers would have improved. I thought he was done. It must have really gotten his ass in gear when he was removed from the rotation for a day, and then the injuries happened.

The last month Fiers has an ERA of 2.25, xFIP of 4.16 and has cut his HR/9 to 0.5. He's consistently gone 6 plus innings a start, with the last 2 at 7 or more. He had a bad first month that was exaggerated by all the HRs he gave up. Since he got demoted and immediately reinserted as a starter he's been a different pitcher.
