Three things on the signing bonus money:

1) The Rangers were down to $1.6ish million in signing money but while they did add significant amounts back via trades, not all amounts have been disclosed. They can't trade for more than about $3.7 million in total.

2) Some bonuses have not been disclosed.

3) Players who sign for 10k or less don't count against your bonus pool. So, the Red Sox for instance still have that $178k. While it's small change, it's important because bidding is won on the margins.

Rangers are absolutely just limping down the stretch. Would not surprise me at all if the A's sweep us. Pitching has been nothing short of awful. And even when it hasn't been (like last night) the offense just refuses to score runs

Hey, we are just better positioning ourselves for the upcoming draft, Houston-style

In all seriousness, there is a link a page or two back I posted, there are a number of teams log-jammed together with similar records; so if nothing else we are at least moving up the draft order a bit with our end of season tailspin.

Now that you mention it, seems I recall the 10K point. I don't think $178K will be the difference.

Some of it you can piece together with dual confirmation.

From July ... and Rojas in fact signed for $1M in August.

Quote:

New York Yankees: Pool $4.75M, acquired additional from Baltimore
Everson Pereira, of, Venezuela (No. 4 prospect), $1,500,000
Roberto Chirinos, ss, Venezuela (No. 20 prospect), $900,000
Anthony Garcia, of, Dominican Republic (No. 28 prospect), $500,000.
Stanley Rosario, of, Dominican Republic, $300,000.
Miguel Marte, ss, Dominican Republic, $200,000.
Enyerberth Ascanio, c, Venezuela, $190,000
Albert Vega, rhp, Dominican Republic, $100,000.
Nelson Medina, cf, Dominican Republic, $60,000
Ezequiel Duran, ss, Dominican Republic, $10,000
Jose Martinez, 3b, Dominican Republic, $10,000
Yordy Nunez, rhp, Dominican Republic, $10,000

That's $3.78M

>> Projected to also sign Ronny Rojas in August for $1M?

Texas Rangers: Pool $4.75M, acquired additional from CWS
Wilderd Patino, of, Venezuela (No. 27 prospect), $1,300,000
Keyber Rodriguez, ss, Venezuela (No. 24 prospect), $1,000,000
Damian Mendoza, rhp, Mexico, $1,000,000
Orcelis Gomez, rhp, Venezuela
Randy Florentino, c, Dominican Republic
Diosbel Arias, ss, Cuba
Derwin Barreto, ss, Venezuela
Anyelo George, ss, Dominican Republic
Freddy Puerta, c, Venezuela
Jonneyder Izarra, lhp, Venezuela
Ronier Lascarro, of, Venezuela

According to LSB, the Rangers may have signed upto $3.285M

Both teams will have the same financial constraints. Same Pool, same upside in acquiring additional pool. So, Max $7.125M (assuming upto 50%). If the Rangers acquire Max and spent what is listed... they have $3.84M left. Yankees would be down to $2.345M if they add Rojas.

Seattle would be the only other player, I would think.

There was additional moves, like the Rangers ($500K) & Yankees getting money from Baltimore. Take out the $10K signings ($30K). A correction that they get upto 75%, as opposed to the 50% mentioned.

So, $4.75M X 1.75%, is $8.3M. Assume both reach their max and it makes disclosure of trades irrelevant. This site appears to indicate the Yanks did reach $8M. It also approximates agreement with the number below. MLTR indicates that Patino in fact did NOT sign with the Rangers, but has recently signed with the DBacks.

Yankees have $4.78 Spent would leave $3.22M out of $8M
Rangers have $1.985 Spent would leave $6.02M out of $8M

I probably need to research if the Rangers signed anyone else, and double check all numbers. Maybe the Rangers don't get to the full $8M. However, if those numbers are accurate... I would think the Rangers might have an advantage here.

I just don't think a million or two is going to be the difference. If this guy is the "Babe Ruth of Japan" then he'll get endorsements on either coast making up the difference in offers.

Darvish didn't have a choice on where he played - this guy does... so I can't see him choosing Arlington, TX.

Money is obviously not everything.

Having said that... I'm not sure the "endorsements" route is all that lucarative for newcomers.

Some context:

Jeter... was making $9M in 2015 and then next person was $4.5M?
Quote:

According to Forbes, Jeter was bringing in $9 million per year in endorsement earnings at the time of his retirement more than twice that of any current player in 2015.

Bryce Harper went big. I don't know the numbers, they weren't disclosed.

But from the May 2016 article:
Quote:

According to the National Center for Business Journalism, baseball players have had difficulty securing endorsement deals similar to stars in other sports because of the lack of exposure both nationally and globally.

From the NCBJ article:
Quote:

The top-10 MLB earners all had salaries that would command respect in any professional sports league around the world. But what was noticeably absent from their earnings was big money from endorsement deals.
Robinson Cano, No. 4 on the list, pulled in the highest endorsements with $3.5 million in deals with brands. His salary from the Seattle Mariners is $24 million this year.
Below, I've re-ranked Forbes' list based on endorsements dollars to give our readers some context.
Robinson Cano: $3.5 million
Albert Pujols: $2.5 million
Clayton Kershaw: $1.2 million
CC Sabathia: $1.1 million
Justin Verlander: $500,000
Ryan Howard: $500,000
Jon Lester: $400,000
Prince Fielder: $300,000
Cliff Lee: $200,000
Felix Hernandez: $200,000

Cano and Pujols are both position players.

So, Kershaw (LAD) is getting $1.2M. CC Sabathia (NYY) is getting $1.1M Where does Ohtani fit?

If the Rangers offer $3M more to sign, it would be surprising the Yankees could pull off a guarantee endorsement deal exceeding Kershaw. I doubt Darvish being absent is because he is in Arlington, as much as it is his limited "success."

So ends a season. Didn't go the way we wanted it to, but that's how it goes sometimes. Given the injuries, a bad bullpen, and trading Darvish, I guess that's about what could have been expected. This will be an interesting offseason.

The Rangers finish tied for third, and Huell's face is spared the poopslap.

The daddywannabees are claiming head to head puts Mariners in 3(a) and Rangers in 3(b) which means that the Rangers did finish in 4th place, so expect this issue to rage on for a while longer. At least on the trash talking thread anyways.

I would expect Huell to tell them to **** off and I fully support him on this position.

Mariners get to draft 14th and the Rangers are 15th, so the Rangers placed better than the Mariners.

I feel like they should reward the top team in each league with night game starts and then give the lower seeds the afternoon ones. Granted, they'd never do that because of the bigger markets, but it would be another nice reward for being the best over 162 games.

If they are willing to postpone a World Series game due to the threat of rain, then yeah... it's pretty certain that everything revolves around TV.

As the self appointed poop slap bet commissioner, I deem that tied for 3rd is NOT the same thing as fourth place.

Congrats Huell! May your face be forever free of feces!

So what now?????

Am I wrong on anything or missing?

Exit interviews.

The agents of FAs start shopping.

Rangers court Ohtani. Evan Grant (DMN) suggest 5 teams - Rangers, NYY, Bos, Houston & Cle.

Gotta wait until the WS is over. Then, FAs are set free.

I think minor tweaks to the roster.

Anticipate roster for Rule V.

First shoe to drop on pitching will be Ohtani.

Then, Jake Arrieta and Darvish.

Then the scrambling starts to fill out rosters.

Martin Perez was asked after his last GS, what the schedule was for him. He said 2-3 weeks of rest. Then, he'd start "rowing" working weights. He won't pick up a baseball likely for a month.

I am really anxiously excited about the off-season. Of course, I always am because that is when hope is highest. As ST draws near, doubt creeps in by the end of ST... reality.

I'd be in favor of pursuing Cashner as a free agent. He was absolutely our best pitcher in the second half. But it would surprise me if he's pitched his way into a bigger offer than maybe we can afford to throw out there.

Perez will be interesting. He was actually fairly good in the second half, but you never know. Maybe he can use this season as a building point. It's going to be very interesting to see how we fill out the rest of the roster. I would very much like Lorenzo Cain as our CF. I guess it just all comes down to the contracts that various guys are gonna command

Astros second best season in franchise history and the last few posts in the Astros thread are still talking about the Rangers (peppered in with posters trying to dump their playoff tickets for below face value).

What a **** fan base.

For whenever the next time Astros resort to attendance-smack...

Dream season.
Big name opponent.
Frontline starter you traded for getting the ball.
Downtown stadium.
Air conditioned.

Yet plenty of tickets available from box office and secondary market tickets will be less than a dinner at Chilis. Because nobody really seems that interested in going...

49,000 capacity... 5th LDS in 7 years... Against a team from Canada... Rain in the forecast.

42,000 capacity... 2nd greatest season in franchise history... Against a major market team... Climate-controlled stadium... And it will be a $15 ticket by gametime.

Helluva fanbase.

A few already have had their posts removed... Like shooting fish in a barrel... Instead of spending a $10 bill to go see their team play in the playoffs they'll be busy checking in on the Rangers threads to see what we think of them.

Just a quick response before I check out: I haven't spent much time on that thread in a few months. The falling off a cliff after five bad games thing became too much. I'm pretty sure there's a post in there somewhere that explains it, and I haven't posted since then.

I've seen what gets posted by fans on both sides. My post wasn't anything close to that sort of stuff. It was pretty harmless.

With that said, enjoy the thread guys.
Yeah, my point was that folks have been banned for lots less over there.

* Fielder released and is now off the 40-man, so one has to assume a settlement was made with the insurance company.

* Bullpen coach not coming back. Every other coach is at this point.

* JD said payroll should drop and 2016-level should be the norm (you can never tell how much of this is truth and how much is strategy).

* Conversations have been had with Matt Bush about converting to a starter

* Rangers will be in on Ohtani if he is posted - Bannister said he'd be OK with letting him pitch and hit.
