I didn't get to watch the game.

On the radio post-game, they were talking about whether a player has ever intentionally gotten hit, to break up a double play. By rule... the batter is ruled a hit, and the runner is out. They were lamenting something in the game.

The following was tweeted to them:

Pretty interesting. WIth bases loaded and 1 Out, Beltre (with the Mariners) appears to intentionally get hit. The ruling was he was hit, therefore out. Run scores. If he had not allowed it to hit him, it would have likely been an inning ending double play.

In searching for the clip, I saw this (which I had to post):

It's amazing to me that Gallo doesn't have a single sac fly all season.
He does seem to hit a LOT of solo home runs. Would be interesting to see how many times he has at bats with no one in scoring position compared to other plays. Or in this scenario, how many times he has "failed" to hit a sac fly.

385 plate appearances - 299 with no RISP.

15 plate appearances with man on 3rd and less than 2 outs - 1 homerun, 3 singles, 4 walks, 4 strikeouts. Other 3 times put the bat on the ball but failed to get the run in.

Damn Claudio giving up some hits these last couple outings.

Been used a lot lately. Maybe getting fatigued?

Not at all. Gallo has been by far the brightest spot of this season.

I think it's probably fatigue. He's up to 53 appearances (most in MLB is 58), and nearly a third of those stretched over more than 1 inning. 20% of them were a full 2 innings or longer (even a few 3 inning outings).

Didn't he start a game against the Astros too? Or am I thinking of someone else?

Yeah, I think he started a game in early May.

If we are going to make a move, this week would be a good week to do so with Detroit and the White Sox on the schedule. Although we get Verlander tonight. Hopefully A.J. can limit the HR's allowed tonight, I think he gave up 3 in his last start in only 4 or 5 innings.

Yeah, with 10 straight on the road on the horizon (7 of which are at LAA/HOU), this is the week we have to make a move.

6 games left on the homestand. 4-2 keeps us in the hunt, but i'd really like 5-1.

So my 10 year old (a potential "crafty" lefty) asked me the other day in regards to Claudio, "he doesn't throw fast....how is he any good?" I told him the biggest weapon a pitcher has is changing speeds.

Some perspective on the WC games ahead:

LAAA (WC) @ Nats, then @ Balt
Minn (0.5) v Cle, then v Arizona
KC (0.5) @ A's, then v Cle
Balt (2) @ Sea, then v LAAA
Sea (2.5) v Balt, then @ Tampa
Tampa (2.5) @ BJs, then v Sea
Tex (3) v Det, then v CWS

I think if we can jump Balt, Sea and Tampa by the end of the weekend, we'll be in good shape.

Cleveland can really help us.

My occasional minor league pitching info.

Round Rock
Mon: Dykstra - 2.0 IP, 8 H, 5 ER
Tue: Wagner

Frisco (AA)
Mon: Jurado - 5.0 IP, 8 H, 3 ER, 2 BB, 4 SO <- AAA or back at AA?
Tues: Tyler Davis (24-RHP-2015) - 8 GS @AA, 2.38 ERA, 0.87 WHIP <- AAA next year?

Down East (A+)
Mon: Kyle Cody (23-RHP-2016) - 6.2 IP, 1 H, 2 ER, 2 BB, 11 SO; 2nd GS @A+
Tues: Benjamin (24-LHP-2014) (8-6, 4.31)

Hickory (A)
Mon: No game
Tues: Reiver Sanmartin (21-LHP) (2-0, 0.00 ERA) - 13.0 IP @A.

Spokane (A-Sh)
Mon: Tyler Phillips (19-RHP-2015) - 8.0 IP, 4 H, 1 ER, 1 BB, 8 SO
Tue: Thompson (19-RHP-2016) (3-1, 4.40)

I think the Rangers' AAA SP should be much better next year with real prospects. I think YoMen, Collin Wiles (23-22GS, 3.95) and Davis will be there with Nick Martinez and Ohtani?! I'm sure they will all be invited to Big Boy ST camp.

Spokane is in the short season NWL. Usually it is a league for college players drafted in the recent draft. The Rangers will assign some players from their June draft there, but they also assign some pitchers that are LATAM or prior year HS draft.

This is what I do while I'm listening to conf calls that drone on...

He's been excellent. Test at A ball next year will be showing his stuff doesn't suffer with longer outings.

So far, as good as you can expect from the rookie league.

My guess is that Morosi means at any point in the season. Clearly Gallo will finish w/ more than 70 hits.

Joey Gallo.....modern day Rob Deer

EDIT: Actually just looked this up.....and surprisingly, Deer isn't even on the top 50 list. Here are the highest HR/Hits percentage:

Mark McGwire 35.85%
Adam Dunn 28.44%
Dave Kingman 28.06%
Harmon Killibrew 27.47%
Jim Thome 26.29%
Barry Bonds 25.96%
Sammy Sosa 25.29%
Babe Ruth 24.85%
Jose Canseco 24.61%
Mike Schmidt 24.53%

Joey currently sitting at 43.95%

The amazing thing is he's already tied Deer's single season career high in homers, and it's mid-August. I was looking up Deer and was surprised he only topped 30 HR twice in his career. I've also seen a lot of Adam Dunn comparisons, but he'll definitely need to up the average. Dunn, from his age 21 to age 30 seasons, was basically between a .240 - .260 hitter. That was another stat that surprised me. Thought it would be lower.

I'd be thrilled if Gallo were a consistent .240 hitter.

230 of Rob Deer's 853 hits were home runs (~28%) so doesn't that put him near the top of that list?

Deer's career was pretty much over by age 32 and he never played more than 135 games in a season...for Gallo's sake, hopefully he has more longevity.

I just went to the first list I googled. Was thinking it was strange Deer wasn't on it

Sounds like you are planning on taking batting practice. You should be giving a clinic.
