And ignoring him getting the hook too early -- if Hamels is fixed and can give us 6+IP and 2ER most times out then this is a wildcard team even with the bullpen woes.
I'd love to hear yours and other's opinions on ranking the top AL rotations.
I think you need at least 3 legit SPs and can hop along with a mid-Tier 4th. Based on the way the playoffs are scheduled, you have 2 games back-to-back, then a travel day, then two more back-to-back. The WC shuffles that a bit.
I think the Rangers are as good as anyone's and could even be one of the best (based on depth). Staying healthy is key.
Texas is back up to 5th in AL ERA for Starters1. Houston: 3.86 ------#5 (McCullers: 3.05), #14 (Fiers: 3.80)
2. Tampa: 4.12 ------#15 (Archer: 3.95), #16 (Cobb: 4.01)
3. NYY: 4.21 ------#9 (Severino: 3.52), #12 (Montgomery: 3.65), #19 Pineda (4.39), #31 (Tanaka: 5.25)
4. Boston: 4.27 ------#2 (Sale: 2.75), #11 (Pomeranz: 3.60), #26 (Porcello: 5.01)
5. KC: 4.30 ------#1 (Vargas: 2.62), #27 (Hammel: 5.04)
5. Texas: 4.30 ------ #10 (Darvish, 3.56), #21 (Perez, 4.60)
7. Cleveland: 4.26 ------#3 (Kluber: 2.85), #8 (Carrasco: 3.44), #30 (Bauer: 5.24), #35 (Tomlin: 5.90)
The above is based on Qualified pitchers, which for the Rangers is 86 IP (1 IP/G team has played)
Hamels: 8 GS, 51.1 IP, 3.51 ERA, 1.07 WHIP <- Would be 9th and needs to average 7.2 IP/GS
Cashner: 14 GS, 81.1 IP, 3.54 ERA, 1.43 WHIP <- Would be 10th with 4.2 more IP.
Darvish: 18 GS, 111.1 IP, 3.56 ERA, 1.14 WHIP <- Currently 10th in AL ERA, but would be 12th.
AdditionallyHouston has Keuchel on the DL (11GS, 1.67 ERA)
Tampa has Odorizzi (16GS, 4.63)
NYY has Sabathia (14GS, 3.81)
Bos has David Price (8GS, 4.02)
KC has Danny Duffy (12GS, 3.51) and Ian Kennedy (15 GS, 4.44)
Also, consider what the Texas rotation's ERA would be if the BP didn't let so many inherited runners score.
