Gallo hit under 0.225 in 500+ AAA ABs. Napoli was averaging a 0.240ish BA in his early 30's -- he hit 0.152 the last two months of 2016. He'll turn 36 this season.

There's a ton of reasons to be frustrated with our approach at the plate, but Mike Napoli and Joey Gallo's batting averages aren't anything that should have surprised anyone.

And ignoring him getting the hook too early -- if Hamels is fixed and can give us 6+IP and 2ER most times out then this is a wildcard team even with the bullpen woes.

He hit .270 in July and .303 in August last year, which were just as much of an aberration as the .152 in the last month of the season. I'd say most reasonable people expected him to be a .700-.750 OPS guy (replacement level for a 1B) and I think that's where he finishes the season (.720ish). No one, including you, expected him to be quite this bad.

So what was the expectation? If he hit under 0.225 in AAA, were you expecting 0.200 at the big league level?

Well he's batting 0.195 with 1.6 WAR as a 23 year old. If your expectations exceeded that, then you weren't paying attention to how he was faring in AAA.

The post you replied to regarding Napoli stated "He'll climb back up over the Mendoza line, but the days of him being a positive contributor over the course of a season are over.", so if your expectation is that he's going to be replacement level then we really aren't that far off.

Did I expect him to be quite this bad? No. Does it surprise me? No. A guy with a historically low batting average and historically high K-percentage that relies on his power and walks to be valuable is not going to improve as he continues past his age prime. You see a lot of the same stuff from Napoli right now that you saw in the postseason last year - his bat speed has slowed so he is guessing more. That's probably not going to get better as he pushes into his late 30's.

Were people under the impression that he was going to go from AAA -> ML pitching and keep his average steady?

So he's hitting 0.195 instead of 0.205? Damn. If only he weren't on pace to hit 45+ homeruns.

If you're upset with Gallo's performance at the plate, then you weren't paying attention to the type of hitter Gallo has been in the minors the last few years.

I'm not sure I've ever said what batting average I expected from Gallo but I'm certain it wouldn't have been anything close to .250.
