Unless Beltre gets hurt, he is playing every day. In his career he has played 2548 games in his 17 full seasons. That is 146.5 Games per season. From 2010 through 2015, that is 886 GP in 6 seasons, that's 147.7 GP. So... about 14-15 games off, per season. I think many of those come on the turf in Toronto and Tampa.
TOTALLY MY FAULT!

When you wrote that earlier, I almost replied to tell you to knock on wood

So if Belts goes on the 15 day DL does Gallo get the call? Or does Banny put Profar at 3rd and continue beat a dead horse with Moreland and Fielder at 1b/ DH?

I'd hope we see Gallo DH, Mitch at 1st and Profar at 3rd.

I think that's almost what they'd have to do. Prince is getting booed at this point. Can't keep running him out there to bash his head into a wall.

I'm sure Gallo is already here, ready to go today. Yesterday was a travel day for Round Rock to go to Iowa - they turned Gallo right around and sent his ass back to Arlington. I'm sure he's a sleep at the Sheraton right now.

Unfortunately they aren't going to pay him $24mil to sit the bench. He'll be shoehorned in there to slog through it.

Gotta cut your losses at some point. They're paying whether he plays or not so to me that wouldn't really factor in with the way he's playing.

The old accounting concept at play here - sunk costs are irrelevant. When it is evident that the lineup is definitely better off without him (permanently), then I think we will acually see him traded or released - either of which they'll pick up almost all of his contract. He was somewhat productive last year, so I do think there is some hesitation about making that decision in what could just be an extended slump. But I think he's mostly done and the release will come.

Isn't Gallo a 3B by trade?

Yes, but Profar is better defensively and has been up for awhile. I'd personally feel better with him in the hot corner.

The only thing with Profar at 3rd is putting the shoulder at risk

Agreed. I'd really rather not see him playing any farther away from first base than second.

yeah, if Profar can handle SS, he should be able to handle 3B. But I would still be skittish about extended time there at this point.

Seems like the team would have a better handle on his shoulder than anybody else. And really I'm not particularly sure that making that throw is too much rougher than from second if he can actually make it. Seems like an issue that might be a little overstated to me.

Honestly it's not even necessarily about the distance of the throw, as much as having to make throws from awkward arm angles like on charging balls in the grass that left infielders seem to have to make more often. You're right that the club knows much more about the status of his shoulder than we do, but I will always cringe when I see him slinging the ball across the infield, the same way I cringe when I see Beltre trying to leg out an extra base.

If both are in the lineup, it's 100% that it would be Gallo at 3rd, and Profar elsewhere, than Profar at 3rd and Gallo DHing.

Anyways I scooped up Gallo as a FA last night in my keeper league about 5 minutes after Beltre gingerly walked off the field, so I'm hoping he gets plenty of playing time.

Well this sucks.

We all knew we weren't going to sweep the season with Houston and Banny did all he could to goad Houston.

As Baseball goes, we've gone through waltzing to the Pennant, to complete upheaval in the span of about 4 innings.

It wouldn't surprise me at all if Beltre hits the DL. It wouldn't surprise me if Gallo is at the Arlington Sheraton, already. This will be tricky for the Rangers. They only have 4 players in the minors on the 40-Man who are healthy. Gallo (1B\3B), Nicholas (C), Alberto (Util IF), DeShields (OF).

Chirinos (C) is on the DL60 and rehabbing. Choo (OF) is on DL15 and rehabbing. Drew Stubbs (OF) is on the DL15 apparently is a week from starting rehab.

We don't have a day off, so if Beltre goes on the DL, it will not only be 15 days, it will be 15 games.

Alberto could be recalled, but I don't want him at 3B for 15 games. That leaves only Gallo.

Chirinos will require a move to get him from the DL60 to the 40.

I could see Darvish being put on the DL, if only to allow him to skip a GS or two.

This update on Griffin.

quote:
Griffin (shoulder) is scheduled to start Thursday for Double-A Frisco, Stefan Stevenson of the Fort Worth Star-Telegram reports. (about 1 day ago)

We need Darvish for the Post-Season, assuming we get there. Games in June are less important, IMO.

Suddenly we go from a surplus of tradeable players, to needing to fill holes.

Moreland and Fielder each went 1-for-3 against Fister who has a split of .297 against Lefties.

McHugh on the bump this afternoon (1pm GS). He also has a .297 split against Lefties.

Regardless of Beltre's health, I think Profar is at 3B today and Beltre sits. That means we'll see Moreland at 1st and Fielder at DH.

Perez needs to be on today.

Regarding cutting loses with Fielder and sunk costs... You can't lose sight that he is owed $18M by the Rangers for the NEXT 4 seasons. That isn't just sunk cost. I think you can try to designate him and hope someone claims him off waivers, which would stick them with the bill and if not, pull him back. But $72M is a big chunk of change that could cripple the team long-term.

Also keep in mind we don't really have a deep pool of position players on the 40, from which to fill.

Seems odd to me that a guy who was a pretty dang good hitter most of last year can be this freaking terrible less than a year later.

Guys don't normally go from .305/ 23HR/ 98 RBI and 187 hits and then 6 months later they can't get the ball out of the infield.

Agreed, it's very bizarre. But Fielder had an excellent first half last season and then slowly but surely got worse in the second half. Now he's basically an automatic out. Bannister cannot keep having him hit 5th, or anywhere close to that. Drop him to 7th. The past few hits he's gotten have been weakly hit grounders to lucky spots.

If Beltre ends up going down, there is NO excuse to not call up Gallo and play Profar every day. At least Gallo gives you SOMETHING in terms of a power threat. Moreland and Fielder are in such a bad way. They need to share the DH spot. Honestly Moreland has been awful, but he's shown more than Fielder so far.

Beltre was scheduled for a day off today, so no surprise there.

That being said - if Beltre goes on the DL, the Rangers HAVE to bring Gallo up IMHO. Alberto is not a 15 game solution there. I don't mind Profar there sometimes, but not 15 days in a row.

They can afford to wait a few days to make a move with Beltre because Rua can play 2B/3B in a pinch. They also have Desmond for that matter.

Seems like a conclusion jump. I don't think it's unusual for a guy that hasn't thrown for a year to have some soreness and stiffness during the process of building up his stamina again.

If Darvish has to miss some time, we should have Griffin ready to go within the next couple of weeks. Assuming he returns to form, we could afford to be very cautious with Darvish and his pitch counts.

How long do you want to ignore this user?
While he was examined and nothing found, I would think after a day or two, if he still has soreness in his shoulder, we'll hear about an MRI as a precaution.

I don't want to jump to conclusions. He seems to think this could just be part of the returning process.

It could also be that because his arm is weak and regaining strength, he may be compensating with his shoulder.

Also, he has dialed up 98 several times. I'm hoping he just pushed a little too hard and some inflammation in the shoulder will be fixed with rest. He went 81 (5.0 IP), 88 (5.2 IP) & 76 (5.0 IP) PC.

I didn't see that coming.

We had 13 pitchers, so that doesn't surprise me.

However, we have 40 on the 40. In order to activate Chirinos, we'll have to dump someone from the 40.

Would that also be Luke? Will we move someone to the 40, or drop someone else?
