One out short... again. He'll get one (or more) one of these days.

And I say no way on the homer call, that ball needs to be caught. I don't agree when they give batters hits for those unless the sun is a big factor or the wind is blowing like crazy. Otherwise, somebody needs an error when those drop.

Now the sox need to score 9 runs with 2 outs in the 9th!

I don't disagree with you. Its just that they do.

Looked like Darvish pulled himself from the game. They showed him motioning up-and-down and reading his lips looked like "I'm done."

Then Wash came out. Looked like one of those situations where Wash let him go as long as he could.

Great game.

He'll get it soon. He is just too good.

Good game R's. But one hell of a pitching performance by Yu! That was fun to watch, even as the opponent!

I'll take great pitching over great hitting any day.

At first I thought walk Ortiz...then figured that might take something away from the no-hit.
Bad form to walk Ortiz there?

I contemplated walking him as well but gotta believe that Darvish thought he was a competitor and could get him

Nobody would have remembered it but Darvish and Ortiz in the end.

Let's go for the trifecta!!!!

in all honesty, he got a homer call on the error. That ball goes as a hit in any scenario other than a No Hitter.

If it hit is glove? Well then there is an argument. It was a mental error for sure. But a scoring error? Well that is VERY questionable. But he SHOULD be pitching for a perfect tonight. He's been untouchable.

You clearly have no idea what you are talking about. An error is by definition a fielder misplaying a ball in a way that allows a runner to advance when ordinary effort would have prevented it. Catching a routine pop fly that you are standing still underneath is the very definition of ordinary effort, which two guys didn't do in that situation. They were both there early enough to stop running for it. The rule has nothing to do with a ball hitting a glove or not. You can have E's where a guy whiffs the ball entirely, and H's that hit a glove.

You are confusing rules with application:

True. But the application of the rule is up to the scorekeeper who in most situations would NOT give an E to a player who does not put leather on the ball.

In the case of that play... it could go either way. I would say even without a No-Hitter there is a good chance that gets called an E... but not a definite.

i don't know. I still remember Gerald Laird trying to bunt to break up the Beckett no hit bid a couple of years ago.

it's definitely called a hit way more often than it's called an error. I think that play should be called an error every time, but should have been an error on Odor instead of Rios. Rios should have called him off, but not communicating is not misplaying a ball IMO.

And thank you.

Danny,

This was my point all along. If nobody touches the ball it almost always gets scored a hit. Whether the rules could, OR SHOULD, argue it an error, that is a completely different conversation.

The official scorer obviously struggled with the call, and he was interviewed by Grant.

He indicated based on the letter of the rule it was an E. I believe he also knew like many rules (proximity to 2nd base) there are some rules that have become part of the game.

Apparently he called Elias to validate his decision.

He ruled the error was on Rios because #1 it appeared Rios had called off Odor and #2 because it is an easier play for the RF than the 2nd baseman. He said it appeared Rios raised his glove as if to call him off.

Odor indicated fan noise distracted him... he thought he heard Rios call him off. I would suspect that Odor was going out expecting Rios to call him off as he continued to drift out.

Rios said he apologized to Darvish.

Darvish said he was more upset about walking Nap.

Papi said he wants credit for the Hit and wouldn't have said anything if he had not gotten the 2nd hit. He said if it was the only Hit he'd shut the hell up, because it isn't worth pursuit... however, since it was broken up anyway... he wants the hit.

Personally, I think Papi needs one of those "random drug tests."

I will also say I like Odor's effort on Papi's hit at the end... I really got the sense he feels an indebtedness for the other play. That kind of play can have either a very positive or very negative impact on a young player (20 years old) in only his 2nd game.

For as amazing as Darvish is, especially after efforts like last night and his first start against the Astros last season, it's hard to believe he has never thrown a complete game. Crazy!

Guys with high strike out totals don't throw a lot of complete games with pitcher pitch counts being what they are now.

As baseball progresses hopefully people will stop caring about something as stupid as a no-hitter. I want to see someone allow 10 walks, 4 runs and lose in a no-hit game so we can end our fascination with arbitrary nonsense.

I like the obsession with no-hitters...most of the time.

Below, the least impressive no-hitter I ever remember. I recall a quote from a player on the losing team saying he didn't even know it was a no-hitter until after the game because the pitcher had such bad command that day:

http://www.baseball-almanac.com/box-scores/boxscore.php?boxid=198609190CAL

By the way, that losing team was damn good. Came within inches of the World Series that year. Bill Buckner probably wishes his Red Sox were defeated in that ALCS. Would have saved him from decades of grief.
