Pretty obvious our guys, minus Altuve, are simply outmatched by big league pitching right now.

The carter experiment is a fail so far. Gotta hope Friedman doesn't turn into something.

And our plate approach is just atrocious. Very high school like..

So after one series under their belt, let's evaluate the roster based on what we know:

# Pitchers
62 Hector Ambriz -
45 Erik Bedard - Looked really good in his debut. Hope he can stay healthy
63 Xavier Cedeno -
55 Rhiner Cruz -
50 Josh Fields - Got the outs he was expected to.
31 Edgar Gonzalez - N/A
64 Lucas Harrell - Looked good
59 Philip Humber - Looked good
20 Bud Norris - Looked good
43 Brad Peacock - N/A
41 Jose Veras - N/A
53 Wesley Wright - Same ol' Wesley

# Catchers
15 Jason Castro -
22 Carlos Corporan -

# Infielders
27 Jose Altuve - The ONLY batter on the team with ANY talent.
23 Chris Carter -
13 Ronny Cedeno - Decent
30 Matt Dominguez -
9 Marwin Gonzalez - Rather see him than Cedeno
12 Carlos Pena -
29 Brett Wallace -

# Outfielders
28 Rick Ankiel - minus the homer
2 Brandon Barnes - Looked decent. Need more info.
14 J.D. Martinez - Had some good ABs
44 Justin Maxwell - with a few triples

The use of multiple laugh/cry faces made me laugh, but that is a very sad post that documents the state of our poor franchise

I think the one thing I need to see is development. I don't care if Dominguez and Wallace and Castro and JD don't bat .300. But I want to see a solid plat approach, attempts to shoot outside pitches the other way, battling deep in counts, and constant hustle.

None of them have showed any of that yet. Look to the older guys as leadership.. but please don't model your game after them.

Regardless.. I think we are starting to see who the true stopgaps are. The ones we've hoped would get better but don't need to because we do have better talent behind them.. Wallace, rhiner, x cedeno, and maxwell. Castro and Dominguez have a little more time but still need to show something and soon.

I want to see this lineup next game..

1. Altuve
2. Marwin
3. Martinez (works deep counts at least)
4. Carter
5. Barnes
6. Maxwell
7. Cedeno
8. Wallace
9. Castro

Let's mix up the order by putting guys more likely to work a count between them.

He had a terrible series, but we've only played 3 games. Let's see how he responds. He had a pretty good spring, so maybe he can make some adjustments. He has crazy power, but that isn't very effective when you constantly whiff at the ball

Let's judge everyone by a three game series! Sounds like a great idea!

Let's keep things in perspective a bit. Darvish had a great spring and was filthy the other night. Ogando, when on, is also tough to hit. Let's get a couple of weeks into the season and see where the guys are. I expect some guys will get going, while others could find themselves at OKC.

iBrad, agreed.

The 2010 Diamondbacks set the record and had a 24.7% K rate.
The current K rate for the Astros is 44.3%. That will not be the final K rate for the Astros. It will come down.

Let's take a little look at what's going on down on the farm:

George Springer hit a 2 run bomb last night at Corpus to help the Hooks win their opener.

Carlos Correa went 2-5 w/ 3 RBIs in the season opener win for Quad Cities

Delino Deshields and Nolan Fontana both had big games to help Lancaster come from behind to win. Folty didn't have a great night on the mound, though.

All in all, very good night. All Astros affiliates won. The future is bright, fellas!

I'm starting to think their might be a scenario where Springer, Singleton, Grossman, and maybe even Villar are all up on the big club later this year, with DeShields and Santana to follow the next year.
Houston Summit
How long do you want to ignore this user?
I can see that, but I'm also reluctant to see many of them come up if they aren't ready. When we called JD, Altuve and Paredes up, both JD and Paredes kinda fizzled away, making me think they were probably rushed up before they were ready. But it would be fun to see some of our big prospects get a taste of the bigs come September for the September callups
irish pete ag06
How long do you want to ignore this user?
Big time prospects in order of appearance IMHO...

OKC:

Singleton
Cosart
Villar
Grossman

CC:

Springer (maybe September)
Tropeano (maybe September)

btw, I can't wait to watch Tropeano pitch on milb.tv tonight.
