Let's say, Tampa has interest in Darvish, but know they can't afford the Posting Fee. They arrange a tentative trade to get him. We'll trade you player X and Y for Darvish, or Shields for Darvish+.

Or, if the Rangers got him... maybe they plan to ship either him or someone else?!

Buster Olney-Most folks guessing/assuming Jays have won Darvish bidding. But just got off the phone with an AL exec who speculates smart $ is on Rangers.

I'm not sure what to think if this is true. Rumors came out yesterday that the posting fee that won was higher than the $51.1 that the Red Sox gave Dice-K. If they were going to fork over that much money just to negotiate with Darvish, I'd have rather just kept C.J.

Small price to pay to then get all your games on tv in japan and all the merchandise sells in japan too. Darvish is one of the biggest celebrities over there, and is the real deal.

Yeah, the flipside of this deal is always the marketing issue and what kind of $$$ that brings in... but that is all still pretty reliant on him continuing to be a "star" stateside.

Ryan just doesnt strike me as a guy that would spend millions on a pitcher he hasn't been able to see in person.

I don't know. As long as he is capable of remaining in the rotation. If the Rangers go back to the WS and win... having him start a game or two... maybe get a W, should have a few TVs on in Japan... If he is actually as good as one hopes... $51M might be the net result of Jerseys and hats sold in Japan.

Exactly (Nippon Ham doesn't know who submit the winning bid, just the amount). And Nolan may not have seen him in person, but JD has, and the Rangers have had a scout at EVERY ONE of his starts this year. If we win the bidding, that means there are enough people in this organization that believes he can be a top 10 pitcher in baseball, and the org has earned the right to get the benefit of the doubt.

I think if they thought he could be successful they might try and get him. The marketing opportunities are huge. Even if he is a #2/3 pitcher the Rangers should see a great ROI.

If international merchandise sales still falls under the "central fund", then yes, they would split it up evenly.

So, let's pretend a Texas WS victory with Darvish would net $60M in sales... each team would get $2M.

I think KC, TB, Oak, et al, ought to get on the phone, and help Texas.

Yep. Not sure if it is only the foreign sales or all though. I learned this as an M's fan when reading about Ichiro's! situation and justification for his contract. Otherwise I'd have no clue.

I believe it might be all sales outside the clubs "home territory", so anything outside of North Texas in the Rangers case.

Talk about Ichiro... I'm interested...
