Should be fun to see who won the bidding war. I'm going to guess 26 million bid will do the trick

I would probably agree it will be in the $20Ms.

26 million got Kei Igawa, I wonder if he ruined it for everyone else. Heck, I'll guess 26.1 million for the win, Mr. Barker.

It'll be bittersweet if the Rangers nab him, and Darvish will have to be better than CJ to compensate for losing him to a division, err, "rival."

I believe Daisuke's winning bid was around $50M, so I would highly doubt Darvish's winning bid is HALF that amount. I'm guessing it will be in the low $40M range.

Are Japanese pitchers ever worth it? Dice K had two decent years, and then fell apart. Hideo Nomo is probably the best pitcher to come over from Japan. He was good, but not worth breaking the bank over.

This is not good logic.

Bidding ends at 4 pm CENTRAL, if I may FIFY.

Put me down for a 32 million prediction.

How does the payment of the bid work? Is the winning team able to finance the payment over the course of the contract? All up front? Curious...

I think they pay the bid to Nippon Hens, then have to negotiate a contract with Yu. If no contract is reached the bid money is returned.

MLBTR says possibly tonight or tomorrow.

They should let other companies bid on him, not just MLB teams. That'd make it more fun.

According to MLBTR: Yankees, Angels, Rays, Red Sox did not bid. Front runners are the Jays and Rangers says multiple MLB execs.

MLBTR says the Yankees bid was modest but the winning bid was "sky high".

Oak has been known to try and block a bidding, by offering crazy money in the bid, to ensure they won... then not negotiate, so they get their money back... and the player doesn't get signed.

It could be the source of the rumors about Texas playing down spending money.

If Texas thought Darvish would be a better option for 2012, than CJ/Buehrle... it might explain why they were rumored to not have offered either, but still gone after Darvish.

I don't know... we end up finding out in the end.

This is why we can't understand each other:

$40M is just a tad bit higher than half of $50M.
TXAggie2011
How long do you want to ignore this user?
I think he's saying he doubts it will be that low (half of Dice-K's fee).
DallasAg 94
How long do you want to ignore this user?
I read that as he doubts it would be that high.

How long do you want to ignore this user?
I meant that his bid would not likely be $25M (half of Daisuke's) - I threw out a number in the low 40s. How is that complicated?
DallasAg 94
How long do you want to ignore this user?
It read as half of DK's would be the ceiling... then list a number higher than that.

latest evan grant info suggests Rangers bid in the 40-49M range and the Jays went LARGE.

Jays might've approached 60...

I still have trouble thinking that the Rangers would rather drop 40 mil (if Evan Grant is correct) to bid on Darvish, and then another 50 for a contract on a relative unknown rather than spend 75 mil/5 years on CJ Wilson.

#1 starter or not, a known #2 in CJ is better than an unknown from Japan - no matter how good he is over there.

Didn't they add a rule over the past year or two that prohibited this from happening?

I thought that if the "negotiation" by the winning bidder wasn't even close to being fair (and it was obvious that the bid was only made to block other teams), then the 2nd highest bidder got the rights to negotiate.

I could be wrong...
