Santo finally made it into the HOF. Congrats, Ron.

Now why couldn't they have done that while he was alive?

This is a new committee. It was very different from the previous veterans committees. The committee consists of Hall of Famers Hank Aaron, Al Kaline, Ralph Kiner, Tommy Lasorda, Juan Marichal, Brooks Robinson, Don Sutton, and Billy Williams. Major league executives Paul Beeston, Bill DeWitt, Roland Hemond, Gene Michael, and Al Rosen are also on the committee. Three media members Dick Kaegel, Jack O'Connell and Dave Van Dyck.

Glad to hear that Santo finally has made it to Cooperstown. Believed for a long time he belonged especially considering 3B is an underrepresented position in the Hall.

Agreed jkag, I don't understand what was keeping him out all along.

In other news, Pujols is going to the AL. Best case scenario for the Cubs, IMO.

Meh, I wish the Cards woulda crippled themselves with a $250M contract

If he signed with them he'd be rock solid for 10 years. Granted Allen Craig will end up being the next thorn in our side.

The Cubs have acquired Ian Stewart and Casey Weathers from the Rockies in exchange for Tyler Colvin and DJ LeMahieu, tweets Troy Renck of the Denver Post.

At first glance, this is a head scratcher. I always liked DJ and Stewart has done nothing to merit that kind of a trade. Weathers better be able to start making the jump through the minors too. We'll see if the new brass knows what they're doing soon enough.

From what I read, Stewart had a down year offensively last year but has a good glove. This is a buy low move. Hopefully he'll get his stroke back. He won't put up huge numbers, but he'll probably be a #7 or #8 hitter. Colvin and DJ were never going to be everyday players.

great, a 26 year old, unproven #8 hitter

Pretty sure he's averaged about 20 HR's and 70 RBI's per 162 games. And do you remember what Epstein said about a player's prime years? Don't act like we gave up anything great, either.

quote:
"We feel there's a ton of potential in there," general manager Jed Hoyer said. "He provides us with a left-handed bat at third base, he's the right age, he's affordable. … We expect big things out of Ian."

quote:
He was the 10th overall pick of the 2003 draft and considered a budding star for the Rockies a couple of years ago, hitting a combined 43 home runs in 2009-10, third most among National League third basemen.

quote:
"Three years potentially of his prime, when a lot of players come into their own," Hoyer said.

Stewart was a bigtime draftpick for them. However, this whole thing is a "change of scenery" swap with Colvin and Stewart. Stewart's batting average has looked pretty terrible over his whole MLB career, though.

I liked what I saw of LeMahieu in his brief MLB stints last season, but the stuff I'm reading seems to think he didn't have enough power to play on the corners.

Cubs would finally be competitive if they put an end to that day game crap. Scary that they now have a competent gm at the reigns.

Just not excited about losing a 23 year old that seemed to have some promise. I guess I just don't see why he could not develop at 2B - I was hoping he would be the next Ryno. I know that comparison is probably absurd, but it is shocking the jump Ryno made from age 23 to 24 - right where DJ is.

You have to think that Theo and Hoyer are a different judge of talent. I wonder what it was that they didn't see in DJ and Colvin.

With Pujols and Fielder leaving their teams and now Braun facing a possible 50-game suspension the Central will be looking a lot different.

I hear the Blue Jays were at the top of the bidding for Yu Darvish. I can't say that I'm terribly disappointed. For the money everyone was paying to get him and the success rate that Japanese players have in the US I didn't think it was worth it. I know very little of him, and while I didn't dislike Dome I just don't think he was worth the investment. I'd fear the same for Darvish.

Would much rather spend a ~$100M contract on a proven MLB pitcher.

No one worthy of that kind of money is available right now, though.

I'd rather them wait then and see what develops after this year. I have a hard time believing they can make a legitimate run this year, even with the changes in the Central. These guys will all be free agents for the 2013 season:

Joe Blanton
Matt Cain
Kevin Correia
John Danks
Zack Greinke
Jeremy Guthrie
Cole Hamels
Colby Lewis
Francisco Liriano
Kyle Lohse
Derek Lowe
Shaun Marcum
Daisuke Matsuzaka
Brandon McCarthy
Carl Pavano
Anibal Sanchez
Jonathan Sanchez

Apparently Dale Sveum just told the media that the Cubs haven't contacted Prince Fielder. If true, that is disappointing.

Yeah, I've heard that that could also just mean that they've spoken with Boras and not with Fielder directly.

Speaking of Wood. Rumor has the Cubs and the Reds in talks to send Marshall in return for Travis Wood. Can't say I'm terribly excited about giving up our most reliable bullpen piece for him. But, I suppose I don't know too much about Wood and I suppose it's possibility that we've seen the best Marshall will be and he's got his highest draft value.

i thought Marshall and Castro were the only 2 untouchables...

that being said, Marshall won't make much of a difference if they aren't getting quality starts anyway.
