I had forgotten about that trade...the Pirates really just are awful at everything, can't get prospects worth a damn for the few good players they have, can't ever put pitching together. It amazes me every year that they haven't been good since I can remember

I am interested to know who the Sox had to give up for him. I am also interested to know in what capacity they are thinking.

It has him listed at 1B so that implies to me that the Sox are looking to replace Lowell at 3B because Youk is flexible. Either that or LaRoche can play in the outfield as well.


I've not seen LaRoche play so any insight would be helpful.

He only played 1B in his time with the Braves and I'm pretty sure with the Pirates as well.

I remember him as a pretty streaky hitter who was prone to making random idiotic plays in the field which were passed off as ADD.

Once after a tapper to 1st he nonchalantly jogged to the bag and got outrun. It sticks in my mind because I'm pretty sure it wound up costing the Braves the game.

Apparently, he's a notorious second half hitter. Just heard on the radio that his OPS goes up BIG time after the all star break.

Curious to see if they play Youk more at 3rd, especially with Lowell's hit/miss hip.

Maybe because Lowell's injury hasn't fully healed and they don't want to play him at less than 100% and Youk will stay on the hot corner...and it's a decent bat off the bench
